Lafayette police seek suspect who approached student

LAFAYETTE — Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect who approached a girl walking in a neighborhood this week.
Around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, a Burton Valley Elementary student had left campus to attend an after-school event at Rancho Colorado Swim and Tennis Club and was walking along Rohrer Drive toward Silverado Drive, police said Wednesday.
Then a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle, possibly a Dodge, with front tinted windows pulled up to the student. When its driver, described only as a man with short brown spiky hair, slightly lowered a window and asked if the she needed a lift, she said no. She then ran up to a nearby mother walking with two other children.
Police responded to the incident by boosting patrols around schools’ start and finish times and stepping up communication with school district officials.
Officers are asking neighborhood residents to check any home-security system surveillance cameras for possible footage from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday that may have captured the vehicle, and added that they are hoping the woman with the children will come forward to speak with investigators.
