A’s make it 15 straight wins over Tigers, in line for road sweep

DETROIT – The Oakland Athletics will have a chance for its first road series sweep of the season in Sunday’s series finale after defeating the Detroit Tigers 4-1 for their third consecutive victory.
A’s starter Daniel Mengden threw a seven-inning gem, giving up just one earned run and three hits while collecting five strikeouts. Jurickson Profar snapped a cold streak of 1 for 11 on the current road swing with a three-hit, one-RBI night in which the A’s second baseman also scored. The win was the 15th straight for the A’s over the Tigers.
Mengden gave up two-out walks to Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera in the first inning but recovered nicely by forcing Ronny Rodriguez into a pop-out to end the inning.
The A’s jumped on Tigers starter Matt Boyd in the third with a base hit to center by Profar followed by a two-run homer from backup catcher Nick Hundley — his first of the season — to give Oakland a 2-0 lead.
Ronny Rodriguez cut Oakland’s lead in half an inning later. He doubled with one out and then scored off a Mengden wild pitch after advancing to third on a fielder’s choice.
Profar picked up an RBI with a one-out double into the gap to score Robbie Grossman, who reached second on a single and stolen base to make things 3-1.
Chad Pinder hit his second home run of the series and fifth of the season in the seventh inning, following up a 437-foot bomb on Friday with a solo shot to left center, giving the A’s a major league-best 26 home runs off left-handed pitchers.
Lou Trivino pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief of Mengden, though it wasn’t without difficulty: Tigers outfielder Jacoby Jones led off with a dribbler to the middle of the diamond, reaching second on a throwing error by the A’s and later moving to third on a wild pitch before Trivino retired three straight to end the inning.
Blake Treinen picked up his seventh save of the season after allowing a leadoff single to Miguel Cabrera before retiring the side.
