San Diego DA Summer Stephan announces new initiatives to train officers for mental health crisis calls
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – There’s a new collaboration between the criminal justice and mental health systems in San Diego County.
Tuesday, San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan’s office announced two new initiatives to give law enforcement officers more tools when they try to help the mentally ill.
As KUSI’s Sasha Foo reports, the two initiatives represent a new front in helping police respond to calls involving someone who is showing signs of mental illness.
In the last year, the District Attorney’s office has brought together more than 200 people in the mental health and criminal justice communities who recognize they can improve the way police interact with these people by teaming up and working together.
