Figueroa will take the seat vacated by John Valdivia who became the city’s mayor in December .
Publicly and financially supported by Valdivia , Figueroa gives the mayor a voting majority on the seven-member council. Valdivia backed three current city leaders in their respective bids for office, endorsing 1st Ward Councilman Theodore Sanchez and 2nd Ward Councilwoman Sandra Ibarra in 2018, and 6th Ward Councilwoman Bessine Richard in 2016.
On Tuesday afternoon, it was not clear when he would be sworn in, but it could be at the first city council meeting in June, or earlier, should elected officials call a special meeting to accept the results.
