Disneyland turns to big-time craft breweries for intergalactic beers on Oga’s Cantina menu in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Oga’s Cantina in Galaxy’s Edge will turn to a host of big-time craft brewers and cidermakers along with a relatively small Sonoma winery to make the beer, wine and cider coming to the intergalactic watering hole at the heart of Disneyland’s new Star Wars land.
Boston Beer, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Ballast Point are among the large craft breweries that will be providing beer and cider for the Star War cantina in Galaxy’s Edge.

Among the beers and ciders on tap at Oga’s:

Bad Motivator IPA : A India Pale Ale-style of beer made with Galaxy and Comet hops with tropical fruit tones from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico (6.0% alcohol by volume)
White Wampa Ale: A Hefeweizen-style wheat beer with banana and citrus flavors from Ballast Point Brewing Co. in San Diego (ABV 4.5%)
Gold Squadron Lager: A golden lager with lavender and plum flavors from Blue Point Brewing Co. in Patchogue, New York (ABV 5.0%)
Gamorrean Ale: A red ale with roasted caramel and grapefruit flavors from New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado (ABV 5.8%)
Spice Runner: A gluten-free hard apple cider with a dark red color and spices from Angry Orchard Cider Co. in Walden, N.Y.

Oga’s Cantina is bound to be a bustling bar at the center of Black Spire Outpost village on the “Star Wars” planet of Batuu, the setting for the new 14-acre themed lands coming to Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

All of the drinks on Oga’s menu have a Star Wars names that reference creatures, droids and locales from a galaxy far, far away.
The IPA refers to R5-D4, the “red” droid with a bad motivator that Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen almost purchases on Tatooine. A Wampa almost killed Luke on the icy Star Wars planet of Hoth. The Gold Squadron lager takes its name from the rebel starfighter squadron first seen in the original 1977 “Star Wars” movie. The intimidating boar-like Gamorreans with large snouts and upturned tusks were used as palace guards by Jabba the Hutt and other underworld kingpins.
Spice was an illicit substance mined on the Star Wars planet of Kessel by Wookiee slaves and transported by smugglers along a dangerous hyperspace route. Han Solo famously “made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs” aboard the Millennium Falcon.

The beer and cider makers hail from the biggest breweries and cidermakers in the United States.
Angry Orchard is owned by Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Boston Beer is the second largest craft brewer in the U.S. based on beer sales by volume, according to the Brewers Association.
Sierra Nevada and New Belgium fall right behind Boston Beer among big craft brewers, at numbers 3 and 4 respectively on the Brewers Association list.
San Diego’s Ballast Point just opened a microbrewery and restaurant in Downtown Disney shopping district, cementing the beer-maker’s relationship with Disney.
Blue Point may be less familiar to West Coast beer drinkers. The foul-mouthed New Yorkers (the brewery’s website is littered with profanity) partnered with Anheuser-Busch’s craft brands unit in 2014.

Disney chose brewers with national reach so the Galaxy’s Edge beers could be identical at both in California and Florida.
“We’re going to have the exact same beers on each coast,” said Disney World food and beverage concept development director Brian Koziol.

Disney went the opposite direction with the wines in Oga’s Cantina, choosing a small Sonoma winery. Goldschmidt Vineyards will make the Toniray and Imperial Guard wines served in Galaxy’s Edge.
The teal-colored Toniray will have citrus and orchard fruit flavors. The Imperial Guard red wine will be a robust Cabernet Sauvignon.
According to Star Wars lore, Toniray is a teal-colored bubbly wine served chilled in a slim flute. Toniray was produced on the planet of Alderaan, which was destroyed by the Death Star in the original 1977 film. Clad in red robes and masked helmets, the elite Imperial Guard unit serves as bodyguards to the Galactic Emperor.

The Galaxy’s Edge brewers, cidermakers and wineries declined to comment. Leaving us with so many questions.
Will the beers, wines and cider be specially made for Galaxy’s Edge? Or a private label of any existing favorite? What are the closest popular parallels at each brewer, cidermaker and winery?
Sierra Nevada makes several IPAs, including the Hop Hunter, Northern Hemisphere, Celebration and Torpedo, which all have a similar alcohol content and style to the Galaxy’s Edge Bad Motivator IPA.
But the closest fit? The Hop Solo. The name appears to pay homage to the rogue smuggler and Star Wars hero Han Solo. The beer is made for “the lone wolves, the misfits, the outsiders — those who prefer to stand on their own.” Hop Solo is made with Crystal hops and has spicy and woodsy tones with a 5.5% ABV. Sierra Nevada only sells the beer in sampler packs.
Gamorrean Ale sounds like a dead ringer for New Belgium’s Fat Tire. The Colorado brewer’s flagship amber beer has a sweet biscuit and caramel aroma with a toasty malt and light sweetness flavor. BeerAdvocate’s list of 49 current New Belgium beers shows only one amber or red beer: Fat Tire.
San Diego’s Ballast Point makes a lot of beers, but not too many wheats or Hefeweizens. The beermaker’s Chicago tap room offered a Grodziskie pale wheat ale with a 4.5% ABV, according to BeerAdvocate. The hazy beer with a smoke scent could prove to be a close relative to the White Wampa Ale in Galaxy’s Edge.
Blue Point’s flagship beer is the Toasted Lager, a World Beer Cup gold medalist brewed with a blend of six brick kettle-fired malts. The New York brewery also makes an easy-drinking Shore Thing with tart citrus notes and a creamy character. Either would make a fine base for the Gold Squadron lager in Galaxy’s Edge.
Angry Orchard makes a dry, crisp Rosé cider with rare French apples that are “red to the core.” That pretty much fits the description of the Spice Runner cider in Oga’s Cantina.
Goldschmidt Vineyard remains an outlier among all these big alcoholic beverage distributors. The Healdsburg winery makes a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley with black fruit characteristics that sounds menacing enough to play the role of the Imperial Guard red wine on Oga’s shelf. The other-worldly teal-colored Toniray would be an oddity on any planet — either Batuu or Earth.
