Calexico resoundingly ousts town’s first transgender mayor and a council ally

Voters in Calexico have resoundingly ousted the first out transgender member of the City Council and her council ally after a bitter recall campaign rife with accusations of transphobia and political cronyism in the struggling city on the U.S.-Mexico border. Nearly 74% of voters in the April 16 special election supported the recall of City Councilmember Raúl Ureña, according to early results released by the Imperial County registrar of voters Wednesday night. Ureña, who uses all pronouns but prefers “she,” publicly came out as transgender after taking office, becoming a target for harassment online and in person. Nearly 73% of voters supported the recall of Councilmember Gilberto Manzanarez, another outspoken young progressive. Roughly 77% of ballots received had been tallied by early Thursday, said Linsey Dale, the registrar of voters. Both Ureña, 26, and Manzanarez, 30, said they believe the recall campaign — which thrust the almost entirely Latino city of 38,000 into America’s culture wars over gender identity — was largely motivated by transphobia. Recall organizers said that their campaign was rooted in concerns about rising homeless numbers and lagging economic development, and that

Motorists delayed by Golden Gate Bridge protest might get ‘restitution,’ San Francisco D.A. says

People who were trapped on the Golden Gate Bridge for hours Monday during a pro-Palestinian protest might be considered victims, entitled to “restitution,” San Francisco Dist. Atty. Brooke Jenkins said. In a post on the social media platform X, Jenkins urged those affected by the bridge closure to contact the California Highway Patrol and detail “what happened to you + contact info so you can be alleged as a victim.” A total of 26 people were arrested Monday as part of a protest that shut down the landmark for hours. As around the country, such protests have been on the rise in California since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s forceful response, resulting in demonstrations on streets and bridges and confrontations at city council meetings. Demonstrators have targeted the homes of prominent politicians, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as the home of a UC Berkeley law professor. Even the graduation ceremony at USC has been affected, with the university canceling a Muslim valedictorian’s speech at its May commencement due to safety concerns. The protest on the bridge Monday was

LAPD officer who shot, killed girl in changing room won’t face charges, AG says

A Los Angeles police officer who unintentionally shot and killed a 14-year-old girl at a Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood won’t face criminal charges, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced. On Dec. 23, 2021, Los Angeles Police Department officer William Jones Jr. fired three times with a high-powered rifle when he responded to the store following reports of a possible active shooter situation. One of those shots went wayward and hit an innocent bystander who was hiding in a changing room with her mother. Jones was responding to the department store after receiving calls about a man acting erratically, possibly armed with a gun. Inside the store, Jones and other officers encountered 24-year-old Daniel Elena-Lopez. The officers saw a woman crawling and covered in blood with Elena-Lopez standing near her and holding something in his hands. The items later turned out to be a bike lock. Johnson won’t back change to rule allowing single member to call for ouster

By Caitlin Yilek April 18, 2024 / 5:08 PM EDT / CBS News Johnson pushes for foreign aid votes Johnson could risk speakership with foreign aid votes 06:19 Washington — House Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday he wouldn’t back a change to the rule that allows a single member to force a vote on whether to oust the speaker, even though he said the threshold “has harmed this office” and the Republican majority.  “Recently, many members have encouraged me to endorse a new rule to raise this threshold,” the Louisiana Republican said in a statement. “While I understand the importance of that idea, any rule change requires a majority of the full House, which we do not have. We will continue to govern under the existing rules.”  Currently, a single member can force a floor vote on the motion to vacate, which was part of a deal former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California made with hardliners in January 2023 in order to win the gavel. Republicans floated changing the rules after the deal ultimately led to McCarthy’s downfall in October, though nothing came of

As EV sales slump, Tesla shares relinquish a year’s worth of gains

By Kate Gibson Edited By Alain Sherter April 18, 2024 / 4:42 PM EDT / CBS News Vote on Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay package Tesla to vote on Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay package after mass layoffs 02:38 Tesla shares on Thursday dipped below $150 a piece, relinquishing a year’s worth of gains as the automaker struggles with decelerating electric vehicle sales and mounting competition.  Continuing a dismal year for Tesla investors, the stock on Thursday fell $5.52, or 3.5%, to close at $149.93, leaving shares down more than 39% this year. The stock last traded at the $150 level in January 2023.  Tesla sales plummeted last quarter as competition increased and EV sales slow. The company said it delivered roughly 387,000 vehicles from January through March, undershooting analyst forecasts and nearly 9% below the 423,000 it sold in the year-ago period.  With Tesla hitting a soft patch, news surfaced this week that the company plans to cut at least 10% of its global workforce in a bid to cut costs. “There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done,” Tesla CEO Elon

In debate over possible censure in San Bernardino, the fur flies

As people rose for the invocation at Wednesday night’s San Bernardino City Council meeting, offering scattered applause and encouragement for the pastor, an unexpected sound broke out: barking. Followed by surprised laughter at the barking. Same at the end of the Pledge of Allegiance, led by a small but poised girl, who also got applause and woofs of support. Five dogs, with their handlers, were in a row set aside for a nonprofit named Inland Empire Therapy Dogs. Any commotion during the early part of the meeting generated a few vigorous barks. An hour into the meeting, the group was called up to receive a proclamation declaring April 30 to be National Therapy Animal Day. The handlers came to the front of the chambers, shaking hands with council members on the stage and bringing the dogs with them. I was in the front row. (The catbird seat?) To a handler, Councilmember Fred Shorett could be heard saying, “Which one is the barker?” The handler replied: “You’ll know in a minute.” Indeed, once the proclamation was presented and the audience clapped for those lined up onstage

Second juror dismissed in Trump trial after prosecutors raise concerns about accuracy of answers

NEW YORK — Two jurors in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial were dismissed Thursday, one after expressing doubt about her ability to be fair and impartial and the other over concerns that some of his answers in court may not have been accurate. The dismissals reduced to five the number of jurors who have been seated for the first-ever criminal trial of a former president. The setbacks in the selection process emerged during a frenetic morning in which prosecutors also asked for Trump to held in contempt over a series of social media posts this week, while the judge in the case barred reporters from identifying jurors’ employers after expressing privacy concerns. The seating of the full jury – whenever it comes – will be a seminal moment in the case, setting the stage for a trial that will place the former president’s legal jeopardy at the heart of the campaign against Democrat Joe Biden and for weeks of testimony about Trump’s private life before he became president. The jury selection process picked up momentum Tuesday with the selection of seven jurors. But

A TikTok ban is wrapped in Speaker Johnson’s foreign aid package: What happens next?

A ban on the popular social media app TikTok in the United States is now lumped in with Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans’ $95 billion foreign aid package, which would provide funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. House Republican leaders late Wednesday posted legislative text on a fourth and final bill — the “21st Century Peace Through Strength Act” — that’s part of the proposed aid package. The bill includes a modified version of the TikTok ban that passed the House earlier this year, as well as the Rebuilding Economic Prosperity and Opportunity (REPO) for Ukrainians Act, mandatory sanctions on Iran and more. The new bill would give TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance 270 days from the date of enactment to divest from the app or face a U.S. ban, according to the proposed legislation. It would also give the president flexibility to offer a one-time extension of 90 days, ultimately possibly providing ByteDance up to a year to divest from the app, according to the bill. The previous TikTok bill that passed in the House in March gave ByteDance 180 days to divest

They shared the news exclusively with Essence magazine, which posted an announcement Wednesday on social media. “This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” Ashanti, 43, said in a statement to the publication. “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.” Ashanti had some fun with the news on her own verified Instagram account, with a video in which she’s seen preparing for a performance. President Biden accepts endorsement from Kennedy family members in counter to RFK Jr.

PHILADELPHIA — President Joe Biden wrapped up a three-day Pennsylvania campaign swing in Philadelphia on Thursday with an endorsement by 15 members of the politically famous Kennedy family — a counter to the political threat from RFK Jr. Kerry Kennedy, a daughter of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, joined Biden along with some of her relatives and said another Donald Trump presidency would “horrify” her father. “We can say today, with no less urgency, that our rights and freedoms are once again in peril,” Kerry Kennedy said during one of Biden’s campaign events in Philadelphia. “That is why we all need to come together in a campaign that should unite not only Democrats, but all Americans, including Republicans, and independents, who believe in what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature.” She along with several of her family members have denounced her brother Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid for president. The independent candidate, who officially launched his presidential bid last fall, is famously known for espousing conspiracy theories about the efficacy of vaccines. Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is paying off as earnings beat Wall Street expectations

Netflix’s victory lap as the leader in streaming continued on Thursday, as the company said it increased its subscriber base by 9.3 million to nearly 270 million in the first quarter. Revenue was up 15% to $9.37 billion in the first quarter, the Los Gatos, Calif. streamer reported. Net income was $2.3 billion , compared to $1.3 billion in the same period in 2023. The company beat Wall Street’s estimates on revenue, subscriber additions and net income. Analysts on average had projected that Netflix would increase its customer base by around 5.5 million subscribers, according to FactSet. Netflix has impressed investors as the company cracks down on password sharing, grows its lower priced ad-supported subscription tier and puts out a steady stream of popular original programs. Netflix’s stock price has increased 30% so far this year. Netflix’s stock has recovered more than two years after subscriber losses and disappointing results sent the stock spiraling. Its shares closed at $610.56 a share on Thursday, down 0.5%. The shares fell about 5% in after-hours trading. “When analyzing key metrics such as subscribers, profitability, and audience demand, it’s

O.J. Simpson was cremated in Las Vegas this week. Funeral plans are still in the works

O.J. Simpson was cremated this week at a mortuary in Las Vegas, and his family is still finalizing funeral plans, according to a representative for the family. There are currently no plans for a public memorial, Malcolm LaVergne, a longtime attorney for Simpson who was appointed executor of his estate, told the Associated Press this week. He told the outlet that Simpson’s ashes will be given to Simpson’s children “to do with as they please, according to the wishes of their father.” Simpson, 76, died of cancer on April 10. Almost immediately, LaVergne started the process of sorting out his client’s estate. Simpson’s will, which was filed in Clark County court in Nevada, notes that Simpson’s personal property had been placed into a revocable living trust created in January. The will, unlike the trust — which has not been made public — does not detail Simpson’s assets or his wishes for any possessions left behind. Just how much money Simpson had at the end of his life remains a mystery. Simpson’s death could open a window for the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald

Palestinians want to join the U.N. The U.S. is trying hard to block them

WASHINGTON —  The United States is once again opposing Palestinian efforts to gain full membership in the United Nations. The U.S. was expected to veto a Palestinian membership application Thursday, ending the latest debate on the issue at the U.N. Security Council and again squashing Palestinian statehood aspirations, at least for now. Despite U.S. opposition, there is overwhelming support on the 15-nation council for the Palestinian bid. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the devastating war between Israel and the militant group Hamas in Gaza has only made the statehood goal more urgent. “Recent escalations make it even more important to support good-faith efforts to find lasting peace between Israel and a fully independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state,” Guterres told the Security Council. But the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said ahead of the expected vote that her country’s opposition has not changed. “Our position is that the issue of full Palestinian membership is a decision that should be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians,” Thomas-Greenfield’s deputy, Robert Wood, said. Here’s a deeper look at the background. Why is the U.S. opposed? The U.S.
