The ‘Sho’ goes on; mural of Dodger slugger Shohei Ohtani unveiled ahead of home opener

As anticipation builds for the “Boys in Blue” this season, the excitement is also, well, on the building as a giant mural of Shohei Ohtani was unveiled today in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo just a day ahead of the Dodgers home opener.   Towering 11 stories over L.A., Ohtani, the newly minted Dodgers superstar, offers fans hope ahead of the season home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.   “I have faith. I think they’ll take the [National League],” fan Julianne Crawford told KTLA’s John Fenoglio. “I think they’ll come out on top of the Braves.   Another fan, Kayoko, who was visiting L.A. from Japan says the two-way sensation is also huge in his home country.   “He’s great. He’s a superstar in Japan as well, and I’m very proud as a Japanese person,” she said. The mural was unveiled Wednesday morning in front of cheering fans. World-renowned Boyle Heights artist Rober Vargas painted the mural by hand and calls it “L.A. Rising.”   A mural of Dodger two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani in L.A. ‘Dangerous’ felon captured after walking away from halfway house in Orange County

After a weeklong manhunt, a dangerous convicted felon who walked away from a halfway house in Orange County was captured in Mexico. The man was identified as Ike Souzer, 20, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. At the time of his escape, authorities said Souzer was considered “extremely dangerous and violent” and should not be approached. On March 20, Souzer was released from custody after pleading guilty to felony vandalism. He was sentenced to 90 days in county jail and placed on probation for two years afterward. He checked into a halfway house that day, called Project Kinship in Santa Ana, but left the premises and never returned. He did not notify his probation officer of where he may have been headed. On March 27, Souzer was located in Rosarito, Mexico where he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexican officials. When he was initially released to the halfway house on vandalism charges, prosecutors had “strongly objected to the 90-day credit time served sentence” due to Souzer’s criminal history. 3 SoCal residents stole over $2.5 million in Target gift cards

Steph Curry on Draymond Green’s latest ejection: ‘We need him’

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hours before he slipped on an all-yellow outfit and stood in front of his locker, before he hit his latest “night-night” celebration, before he recorded his seventh double-double of the season, Steph Curry was apoplectic. After Draymond Green got assessed two technical fouls in rapid succession to get ejected Wednesday night, Curry keeled over. The Warriors were already without Jonathan Kuminga for a massive road matchup against the Orlando, now Green was gone too? Less than four minutes into the game, an exasperated Curry hid his red face in the neck of his jersey. Curry, once again, lost the defensive yin to his yang. Green, for the fourth time this year and for the umpteenth time of this dynasty, lost his cool in such a manner that removed him from the court. Green is so crucial to the Warriors, any time he puts his availability at risk is a major hit to Golden State’s chances. They’ve had this discussion. They’ve had it so many times. “We need him,” Curry said after an improbable 101-93 win in Orlando. “He knows that. We all

‘Pat the Bat’ Burrell returns home on Giants coaching staff

SAN JOSE – If Marco Luciano, Luis Matos and the rest of the Giants’ young hitters break out this season, a new – but familiar – face in the clubhouse will be a big reason why. “Pat the Bat” is back with the Giants for the latest chapter in his charmed Bay Area baseball life. Pat Burrell joined new manager Bob Melvin’s coaching staff as a hitting instructor, 29 years after helping San Jose’s Bellarmine High win the West Catholic Athletic League title, 14 years after helping spark the Giants’ breakthrough World Series run, and four years after he got his coaching start as a roving hitting instructor in the team’s minor league ranks. “I got a chance to resurrect my career here,” said Burrell.  “So this organization holds a special place in my heart.” The Giants were Burrell’s final stop on a pro career that began with him as the top pick in the 1998 draft after being a three-time All-American at the University of Miami. The Giants signed the then-33-year-old outfielder after he had been released by Tampa Bay early in 2010, and

Oakland man arrested on suspicion of pimping

REDWOOD CITY – Authorities on Wednesday arrested a 33-year-old Oakland man on suspicion of pimping and pandering in Redwood City. An investigation was launched in December after officers encountered a victim of human trafficking at a hotel, Redwood City police Lt. Nick Perna said in a news release. Detectives identified the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to Perna. On Wednesday, Alameda County probation officers arrested the suspect. Perna said Redwood City detectives also searched his home, where they found evidence related to the alleged crime. The suspect was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on charges of pimping and pandering. “The Redwood City Police Department has a zero tolerance approach towards those who choose to victimize and traffic other people,” Perna said in the news release.

Coronado Bridge is built differently than Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — After the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, questions are swirling around the safety and design of other over-the-water bridges. University of San Diego Physics Professor Rae Robertson-Anderson said the devastating incident happened because of an accident, not a design flaw or bridge failure. “All the work that’s put into building bridges is to withstand that force downward, it’s necessarily to withstand massive forces coming from the left or the right,” Robertson-Anderson said. “That ship was about 200,000 tons and was coming at 9 mph, that’s basically the force that hit the bridge was one million pounds, no bridge that was built could really withstand that.” While a bridge likely couldn’t withstand the force of about one million pounds hitting it from the side, Robertson-Anderson said if the same incident happened to San Diego’s iconic Coronado Bridge, it would likely have a different result. “The Coronado bridge is a Gerber bridge,” she said. Two teens arrested in deadly Chula Vista shooting Robertson-Anderson explained that each pillar has its own section and allows the pillars to

POWAY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Dozens of firearms were stolen from a sporting goods store Monday in Poway, authorities said. (KFSN) — On April 1st, the wage for most fast-food workers in California will increase from the state’s current rate of $16 an hour to $20. “It’s good for the workers, definitely. The cost of living is going up. So, they get a better little increase in their check,” said Merced resident Francine Mestaz. Dillon Savory is the executive director for the Central Labor Council. He says employers are always pushing costs onto consumers, but it really comes down to the affordability crisis in California. “A lot of workers are not; they’re just trying to take care of their families. They’re not able to think about things beyond their day-to-day activity or week to week ability to take care of their loved ones,” explained Savory. Action News reached out to Chipotle Mexican Grill regarding the increase. A spokesperson declined our request for an interview but quoted the company’s Chief Financial and Administrative Officer as

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: Dad of 3 who lived in Maryland for 19 years among missing workers

BALTIMORE, Md. — The bodies of two construction workers have been recovered while four others remain missing and are presumed dead after a cargo ship struck Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending the workers into the water. Eight workers were fixing potholes on the span when the ship hit the bridge around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The workers plunged into the frigid water, and two were rescued, officials said. Search and rescue efforts for the workers were suspended Tuesday evening, with operations shifting to a recovery phase, officials said. Shannon Gilreath told reporters Tuesday evening. Rui Hachimura is bad luck for Memphis again as Lakers win

MEMPHIS, Tenn.  —  Maybe the Grizzlies haven’t learned? Despite them being ravaged by injuries and suspensions, their season largely a throwaway, Wednesday’s game with the Lakers was their first time this year hosting the team that ousted them last spring. But, somehow, Rui Hachimura was still open. “I got all the flashbacks from last year,” he said. After Hachimura set the tone in the playoff opener a year ago by drilling five three-point shots, he found himself, again, open in Memphis, two feet behind the line just off Beale. With the Lakers forced to play without Anthony Davis because of a hyper-extended knee he suffered his 52-minute masterpiece Tuesday in Milwaukee, Hachimura’s shooting and commitment on the glass helped the Lakers hold off the Grizzlies in a 136-124 win — the Lakers’ fifth straight. Since becoming a full-time starter on Feb. 3, Hachimura is averaging 15 points and shooting 57.3% from the field and 41% from three. The Lakers are 16-7 since the change. “Clarity always helps performance. And so once inserting him into the starting lineup, it gives him a chance where the defense

Sherri Papini, who faked being kidnapped, still owes $300,000 and prosecutors aim to collect

Sherri Papini, the woman who fabricated her own elaborate kidnapping and went to prison for mail fraud and lying to federal agents, still owes more than $300,000 in restitution, federal officials say. Papini, 41, was ordered to pay $309,902 in restitution when she was sentenced to federal prison in September 2022, nearly six years after she staged her own kidnapping and kicked off a frantic search that made national headlines. But as of March 22, federal officials say, Papini still owes nearly all of that money. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California filed an application for writ of garnishment worth $340,221.23 against Papini, which includes a 10% litigation surcharge. Also targeted in the writ is the law firm representing Papini in her divorce. The filing claims Papini has a “substantial nonexempt interest in property” that is in “the possession, custody, or control of” the law firm. Sacramento-based attorney William Portanova, who represented Papini in her federal case, acknowledged during her September 2022 sentencing hearing that she was unlikely to be able to afford the payments. “Sherri Papini was ordered to make

Statue Unveiled Depicting Iconic Handshake of Ex-L.A. Supervisor and MLK

A statue was unveiled Wednesday at a church in Compton depicting a moment in 1961 when L.A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, father of current Supervisor Janice Hahn, greeted the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at LAX with a handshake — the only local official who would agree to welcome the civil-rights leader to the city that day. “That day that my father spent with Dr. King has always been a point of pride for me and my family,” Janice Hahn said Wednesday during the unveiling at the Archdiocese of North America Unitarian Universalist Church, formerly the Calvary Community Church of Compton. The bronze statue depicts a now-iconic photo of Kenneth Hahn and King shaking hands and smiling after King descended the steps of a just-landed plane. The two would spend the afternoon together, with Hahn — an ardent civil-rights advocate who died in 1997 at age 77 — showing King around his South Los Angeles district, visiting the L.A. Calvary Community Church and talking in Hahn’s downtown office. At Wednesday’s ceremony, Janice Hahn recalled how other local elected officials at the time had “scheduling

Don’t ever short stop God with this gift.” Fellow Motown stars Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, the company’s founder Berry Gordy and William “Mickey” Stevenson, the Motown executive who discovered Reeves and hired her as a secretary before Gordy signed her to a recording contract, preceded Reeves in speaking at the 11:30 a.m. ceremony at 7080 Hollywood Blvd., near La Brea Avenue.
