Dog owners warned by state wildlife officials to keep their canines away from raw fish

Those who enjoy fishing and who seek trout and salmon in particular were reminded Wednesday by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officials that they should keep their dogs away from the uncooked fish. A parasitic flatworm called Nanophyetes salmincola can be transmitted to canines that eat the two types of fish before they’re cooked, creating a bacteria-like organism in their body and a condition called salmon poisoning disease, officials said. It is seen only in dogs. The disease is potentially fatal but is treatable. Signs of the disease in a dog include a rise in body temperature, a loss of appetite, listlessness, diarrhea and vomiting. Rapid weight loss may also happen. Dogs with those symptoms must be rushed to a veterinary hospital, officials said. They can die within two weeks of eating uncooked fish containing the parasite. Fish and Wildlife officials said the the flatworm — or “fluke” — occurs naturally in the waters of Northern California, particularly the north part of the state. At least 32 dead as flash floods wash over half of Kenya

Kenya has registered heavy rain since mid-March but downpours have intensified over the past week, leading to mass flooding. The Kenyan Red Cross says it has carried out over 188 rescues since the onset in March. Some roads in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi were closed Wednesday and several neighborhoods remained submerged after another day of heavy rainfall. “The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels. The county government for all its efforts is clearly overwhelmed,” wrote city Senator Edwin Sifuna on his X account. “We need all national emergency services mobilized to save lives.” He shared a video of residents trapped on the roofs of their houses in an informal settlement in Nairobi. Two bills that would allow for new regulation of “transient accommodations” have moved readily through the state legislature this spring, and if passed, could provide new avenues to limit the short-term home rental industry, which has exploded in recent years across the state’s four populated islands. But the issue has been a challenging one for officials in cities and states across the U.S. — including Los Angeles, New York, Nashville and Bozeman, Mont. — who have looked for ways to rein in the ballooning popularity of Airbnb and other online home rental platforms without eliminating the economic benefits that such properties draw. In Hawaii, last summer’s Maui wildfires have uniquely forced attention on the housing crisis — which was reaching a critical juncture even before the fires displaced thousands. David Quinn fired as Sharks’ head coach after two seasons

Federal government ‘believes’ virus found in grocery store milk is safe for consumption

After identifying remnants of bird flu virus in grocery store milk, federal officials announced Wednesday that they “believe” the nation’s milk supply is safe and that the virus is inactivated by pasteurization. “Heating milk to a specific temperature for a set period of time through pasteurization is done to limit the activity of pathogens to a level that does not pose a risk to consumer health,” said Don Prater, acting director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. However, Prater acknowledged that “no studies on the effects of pasteurization on HPAI (high pathogenic avian influenza) viruses and bovine milk have previously been completed.” Wednesday’s assurance of safety follows a series of bird flu outbreaks in dairy farms in eight states. A scary moment involving a Lufthansa Airlines flight was captured on video at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday. The 747-8i, Boeing’s largest version of the popular “Jumbo Jet,” was attempting to land when it hit the runway hard and bounced, prompting the pilot to abort. The incident, known as a Baulked Landing, was streamed on Airline Videos Live and later posted on YouTube and social media. A California man has been arrested and faces federal charges related to his repeated calling in of bomb threats, pretending to be a federal agent — sometimes to investigate the threats he himself called in — and filing fake search warrants in federal courthouses. As first reported by Seamus Hughes’ Court Watch, Anton Iagounov was arrested Friday, and a federal criminal complaint alleges four counts of false personation of an officer or employee of the United States. Ann Mayers entered AurGroup Credit Union on April 19 and “demanded money while displaying a handgun,” the Fairfield Township Police Department said in a news release. Images released by police show Mayers in the bank wearing a dark gray sweater and light gray sweatpants, a patterned face mask and glasses. Police were called to the scene at 1:29 p.m. local time. They shared photos of the robbery online to help find suspects. It’s not clear how they identified Mayers as a suspect. Police found Mayers at her home in Hamilton, Ohio, and arrested her at 3 p.m., according to online records. Mayers admitted to the crime, the police department said.
