18 suspects arrested, cited in Southern California retail theft bust

Eighteen suspects could face criminal charges following a massive retail theft bust targeting stores across San Bernardino County. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department became aware of a troubling rise in thefts targeting retail stores. The sometimes destructive and violent robberies often involved organized theft crews, investigators said.  Authorities began targeting and surveilling popular shopping districts in Rancho Cucamonga, Chino Hills, Apple Valley, Hesperia and Victorville. In a weekslong Smash and Grab Operation between Oct. 12 to 25, authorities from multiple agencies coordinated to track down and catch thieves in the act. During the busts, five suspects were arrested for felonies and 13 suspects were arrested for misdemeanors. Officers also recovered around $7,075 in stolen merchandise and property.  “These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents,” authorities said. “Investigators utilize conventional and non-conventional investigative methods to accomplish this task and lessen the blight created by these bad actors.”  3 arrested for series of violent ‘follow-away’ robberies across SoCal Agencies involved in the operation included:

Police identify robbery suspect accused of shooting 2 officers in South Los Angeles

Police have identified the name of the robbery suspect arrested for allegedly shooting two LAPD officers in South Los Angeles as well as further details about the incident in a release on Saturday night. Officers initially responded to 92nd Street and South Central Avenue around 9 p.m. on Friday night for reports of a robbery. Before their arrival, LAPD’s investigation later revealed that the suspect, identified as Nija Hill, pistol-whipped two victims in an alley adjacent to a laundromat, located near the 9200 block of South Central Avenue. Hill, still armed, went into the laundromat to threaten several people inside and then came back outside to again threaten several vendors with his gun. The reports did not specify whether he successfully robbed the victims.  Officers then responded and found Hill standing on the sidewalk outside of the laundromat, but the suspect took off on foot when he noticed law enforcement’s arrival. LAPD said it was not very long into the chase that Hill pulled out his gun and fired at the pursuing officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Both officers were struck by Hill’s gunfire

On the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day 2021, Nanette Stuiber sat in her car and watched anxiously as EMTs and Montgomery County Sheriff Deputies descended on a house in the tiny village of Farmersville, Illinois. Nanette Stuiber: I was quite upset and kinda going crazy in the car. Stuiber had been unable to reach her good friend Leslie Reeves. Stuiber knew Leslie had gone to that house the night before to go on a first date with Chris Smith , a man she had met online.  Nanette Stuiber: She was extremely excited. She thought it might be a really good connection … But now Stuiber was worried. She had called 911 to request a welfare check. She’d seen Smith get taken away in an ambulance but there was no sign of Reeves. Nanette Stuiber: I kept hoping … bring Leslie out, please … Finally, a detective approached and asked Stuiber for a photo of Reeves. She showed him her phone and he gave her the horrible news.  Nanette Stuiber: “I’m sorry to have to tell you this … your friend has, um, been murdered,” you know

The cause of the mattress fire was still under investigation, the fire department said.

Meet the Fleet: Crowds get a first-hand look at Navy warships in San Diego Bay

Daniel Brite of North Park was one of the early arrivals to “Meet the Fleet at 32nd St.,” an event that offered free tours Saturday of four ships at Naval Base San Diego. “I got my girlfriend out of bed and said, ‘Let go, we’re going to check them out,’” the 37-year-old salesman said. A visit to the 844-foot USS Tripoli, a “Big Deck” amphibious assault ship that carries and deploys Marines, made quite the impression. “The size of the ship is actually pretty staggering,” he said. “It definitely makes you feel safe, seeing all these boats out here.” Brite was one of an estimated 10,000 visitors who took roughly half-hour tours of each vessel in groups of about 25 throughout the day. It has been more than two years since the Navy last opened the base’s gates to the public. “This is a great opportunity for (the public) to come on board and actually see through the crew’s eyes what they do, what the mission of the ships are and what life at sea is like,” said Capt. Robert Heely, commanding officer for Naval

Spartans dominate second half beat Shasta, 26-14

RED BLUFF — The Red Bluff High School football team’s offense has been outstanding for most of the season. Friday night, in their final regular-season home game, the Spartans’ offense got a little help from their defense en route to a 26-14 win in Eastern Athletic League play on a rainy night at Spartans Stadium. With the win, Red Bluff (7-2, 2-2 EAL) moved into third place behind Pleasant Valley (6-3, 4-0) and Foothill 7-2, 3-1) heading into the season finale at Chico High. Shasta dropped to 2-2 in league play and 6-3 overall. Red Bluff’s offense got off to a sluggish start against the Wolves’ defense and didn’t really wake up until late in the first half. From then on, the Spartans dominated the game. “It was just a little weird — we talked about the warm-up was a little bit weird in the gym,” Red Bluff head coach Jacob Daricek said. “And then the senior night coming out, it just wasn’t like a normal night.” In fact, both teams’ offenses weren’t very strong to start the game, as they traded possessions. Editorial: Dublin should have been up front about term-limit ballot measure

Click here for a complete list of our election recommendations. The Dublin City Council placed on Tuesday’s ballot a measure that includes good government reforms and a term-limit extension. Too bad they couldn’t be forthcoming with voters about the term-limit component. Voters should reject Measure JJ. The council should try again in the next election — but be up front with the voters. The measure’s provisions include prohibitions on councilmembers accepting gifts from city contractors or lobbyists, and on lobbyists sitting on city commissions. It would require the city to post on its website monthly financial reports and most city contracts before the council acts on them. All good stuff — although it’s not clear that a ballot measure was needed to implement them. And then there’s the term-limit provision, described in the ballot wording as “impos(ing) a combined term limit of 12 years for the Mayor and/or City Councilmembers, while retaining existing term limits for the current Mayor and City Councilmembers.” What it fails to make clear is that this would be an increase in how long someone could serve as the elected mayor
