Missing spooky season? Here are more video games to sate your appetite for horror

Although spooky season is over, the scares don’t have to stop. Players will find plenty of horror in video games year-round. In fact, some of the best titles this year have been horror games. Here’s a quick look at recent releases that have murder, mayhem and monsters. “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” — After a disappointing outing last year, the best-selling franchise returns to form this year thanks to Treyarch and Raven Software. Taking place during the first Gulf War in the 1990s, the story campaign expertly sets the latest chapter amid an intriguing time of espionage and has the mission design chops to bolster the narrative. Meanwhile, the multiplayer benefits from the new omnidirectional movement mechanics that let players sprint, dive and slide in any direction. Now, players can pull off more spectacular moves when they remember to use it. The horror from “Black Ops 6” comes from its Zombies mode, which again returns with the campy fun and fast-paced co-op action that fans have come to love. Players can tackle two large maps called Terminus and Liberty Falls. Players will have to

Washington governor OKs massive new wind farm and urges swift turbine approvals

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has approved a revised plan for a massive proposed wind farm after he rejected a sharply slimmed-down version earlier this year. Inslee urged permitting officials to work quickly to allow the construction of as many Horse Heaven Wind Farm turbines as possible, The Seattle Times reported. Washington state won’t meet its “urgent clean energy needs” if officials take years to authorize the turbines, he said. The original $1.7 billion project included up to 222 wind turbines across 24 miles (38.6 kilometers) of hillsides in the Tri-Cities area of eastern Washington and three solar arrays covering up to 8.5 square miles (22 square kilometers). But then Washington’s Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council, a clearinghouse for permits required by large projects, recommended slashing the proposal in half because nests of the endangered ferruginous hawk were found in the area. It wanted a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) buffer around each nest. Most nests were empty, but the hawks can return to them years later. In May, Inslee rejected the council’s recommendation to shrink the project, prompting the panel to suggest a compromise

Invasive mussel found in North America for first time, poses immediate threat in California’s delta

A particularly-worrisome mussel species has snuck into North America for the first time through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta — sparking what many are calling an immediate threat to California’s most significant watersheds. Golden mussels, an invasive freshwater bivalve that has devastated ecosystems and critical water infrastructure in other parts of the world, were recently discovered near the Port of Stockton. Limnoperna fortunei appear to have also found their way many miles downstream into O’Neill Forebay of the San Luis Reservoir, where officials in Merced County have been rapidly conducting genetic testing. “The species poses a significant immediate threat to the ecological health of the Delta and all waters of the state, water conveyance systems, infrastructure and water quality,” according to a public alert by the California Department of Water Resources and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “This discovery is the first known occurrence of golden mussels in North America.” These mussels likely infiltrated California by a ship traveling from an international port and are likely to spread throughout the Delta and through the water infrastructure associated with the Delta, officials said in

Sharks update: What’s Celebrini’s next step? Smith has fun with new nickname

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks might get a better understanding of how close Macklin Celebrini is to returning to the team’s lineup as soon as next week. The Sharks are scheduled to practice on both Monday and Wednesday in San Jose as they start to wind down their five-game homestand. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Saturday that Celebrini, who has been on injured reserve with a hip issue for over three weeks, won’t play in a game until he practices with some contact. Celebrini rejoined team activities on Thursday and has participated in two morning skates with the Sharks and one practice, which didn’t appear to have much in the way of contact or battle drills. Celebrini was the first Sharks player on the ice Saturday morning – and the last one off — as the team had an optional skate before its game against the Vancouver Canucks at SAP Center. Celebrini stayed on the ice for about 90 minutes Saturday morning, with he and fellow injured forward Ty Dellandrea only leaving after the Zamboni came on and began cleaning the ice. The

If 49ers’ Bosa is fined for wearing MAGA hat, it probably won’t happen until after election

The NFL announced fines for 26 players Saturday and Nick Bosa was not one of them. That doesn’t mean Bosa won’t be fined. Although the NFL declined comment through a spokesman, it has been reported the league is looking into Bosa wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in in view of television cameras support of presidential candidate Donald Trump after the 49ers’ 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys. According to Jonathan Jones, an NFL on CBS insider and the Washington Post, no determination on a fine will be made until next week and any punishment will not include a suspension. In other words, after the Nov. 6 election. Article 8 of the NFL rulebook prohibits players from “wearing, displaying or otherwise conveying personal messages” and specifies “non-football” events such as causes or political campaigns. All such items are subject to NFL approval. Bosa photobombed an interview with Melissa Stark and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Isaac Guerendo and tight end George Kittle while wearing the hat. 2 Ohio officers involved in Black man’s death charged with reckless homicide

November 2, 2024 / 5:51 PM EDT / AP Prosecutors in Ohio have announced reckless homicide charges against two police officers in the death of a man who was handcuffed and left face down on the floor of a social club in Canton while telling officers he couldn’t breathe. Stark County prosecutor Kyle Stone told reporters Saturday that the charges against Canton officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch were brought by a grand jury in the April 18 death of Frank Tyson, a 53-year-old East Canton resident taken into custody shortly after a vehicle crash that had severed a utility pole. Police body-camera footage showed Tyson, who was Black, resisting and saying repeatedly, “They’re trying to kill me” and “Call the sheriff” as he was taken to the floor, and he told officers he could not breathe. Officers told Tyson he was fine, to calm down and to stop fighting as he was handcuffed face down, and officers joked with bystanders and leafed through Tyson’s wallet before realizing he was in a medical crisis. The county coroner’s office ruled Tyson’s death a homicide in August

Settlement `In Principle’ Reached in Dueling Pussycat Dolls Suits

A settlement `in principle’ has been reached in cross litigation between Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger and the group’s creator regarding the 2022 cancellation of a proposed group reunion tour. Robin Antin, the choreographer who started the Pussycat Dolls, sued Scherzinger in September 2021, alleging the singer wrongfully refused to participate in the group’s planned reunion tour unless she was granted full creative control and a larger share in the group’s business venture. The tour was canceled in early 2022. In their court papers, Antin’s attorneys called Scherzinger’s ultimatums a form of “extortion’ that were “materially different” than those the parties had agreed upon under a February 2019 contract. The attorneys in the case filed joint papers on Friday with Judge Mark H. Epstein notifying him of a settlement “in principle” that they said is “subject to the execution of certain written agreements.” No proposed terms were divulged. Scherzinger, now 46, countersued Antin in August 2022, stating that Antin breached her duties and obligations to Scherzinger, severely damaged (the Pussycat Dolls’) goodwill and wasted the funding for the planned PCD reunion tour, ruining PCD’s ability

Fired LMU Women’s Soccer Coach Drops Wrongful Termination Suit

A former Loyola Marymount University women’s soccer coach has dropped her wrongful termination lawsuit in which she alleged she encountered resistance to her directives from the athletic department on down to her students. Jenny Bindon’s Santa Monica Superior Court lawsuit had a host of other allegations, including breach of contract, retaliation, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On Thursday, her attorney filed court papers with Judge H. Jay Ford III asking that Bindon’s case be dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled. The court papers do not state if a settlement was reached or if Bindon was not pursuing the case for other reasons. Bindon was hired in December 2019 as the sixth head coach in program history. During her two seasons with LMU, she posted an overall record of 1-26-1. In the 2020-21 season — which was played during the spring semester due to the coronavirus pandemic — the Lions posted a 1-7-1 record. As a player, Bindon represented the New Zealand national team for 10 years, collecting 77 caps, the most by a goalkeeper, men’s or women’s, in that nation’s history.

Trump and Harris make their final pitch to voters in last weekend before election day

In the final, frenetic days of the 2024 campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are crisscrossing the country, keeping up a dizzying schedule of rallies, public appearances and media interviews as they make their final pitch to voters in critical swing states. Trump is campaigning aggressively in North Carolina, with three weekend rallies in the state, where elections officials have scrambled to ensure voters are able to cast their ballots in counties devastated by Hurricane Helene in September. Harris, after rallies in Atlanta and in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, is set to spend Sunday in Michigan, a “blue wall” state where Trump eked out a victory in 2016 before narrowly losing to Joe Biden four years later. Harris is scheduled to appear in and around Detroit on Sunday before an evening rally at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Controversial remarks by Trump — who said in Wisconsin last week that, “whether the women like it or not,” he would protect them — reverberated throughout the weekend, as did a bizarre moment during a Friday night rally in Milwaukee in which the

TGI Fridays files for bankruptcy protection, looking for ways to ‘ensure the long-term viability’

DALLAS, TX — TGI Fridays Inc., the American casual dining chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Saturday. The company said in a statement that fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic was the “primary driver of our financial challenges” and it will use the Chapter 11 process to “explore strategic alternatives in order to ensure the long-term viability of the brand.” “The next steps announced today are difficult but necessary actions to protect the best interests of our stakeholders, including our domestic and international franchisees and our valued team members around the world,” Rohit Manocha, TGI Fridays’ executive chairman, said in a statement. The bankruptcy affects TGI Fridays’ parent company, which operates 39 restaurants, and not the franchisees that control the remaining locations. The company has secured financing so all restaurants will operate as usual while it navigates the bankruptcy process. TGI Fridays has “stopped the clock on payments of this month’s rent to landlords and other vendors, giving them breathing room to restructure,” John Bringardner, head of Debtwire, told CNN. He added that the parent company “will likely have to close or sell unprofitable locations
