Sheriff asks FBI to investigate death of Black man found hanging in Alabama

November 2, 2024 / 12:39 PM EDT / AP The FBI is investigating the death of a Black man in Alabama, who was found hanging in an abandoned house, following a request from a local sheriff amid fears among community members who accuse local law enforcement of longstanding, unchecked misconduct. Sheriff’s deputies found Dennoriss Richardson, 39, in September in a rural part of Colbert County, miles away from his home in Sheffield, a city of approximately 10,000 people near the Tennessee River. The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office ruled Richardson’s death a suicide. But Richardson’s wife, Leigh Richardson, has said that is not true, explaining her husband did not leave a note and had no connection to the house where he was found. Dennoriss Richardson, who coached kids in baseball and football, had alleged he was assaulted, denied medical attention, sprayed with tear gas

Debate over abortion rights leads to expensive campaigns for high-stakes state Supreme Court seats

By Andrew DeMillo, Associated Press  LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Abortion and reproductive rights have been central to the races for president and governor in North Carolina, a battleground state that has more moderate abortion restrictions than elsewhere across the South. That’s been even truer in the fight for a seat on the state Supreme Court that abortion rights supporters say will play an important role in determining whether Republicans can enact even more restrictions. Registered Republicans currently hold five of seven seats and could expand that majority even further in Tuesday’s election. Justice Allison Riggs, a Democrat who is running for reelection, is focusing heavily on the issue and touts her support for reproductive rights. Her first television ad featured images of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor, who prefers to restrict abortions earlier than the current 12 weeks. She says her GOP rival for the court could be a deciding vote on the bench for such restrictions. “This is an issue that is landing in front of state Supreme Courts, and it is one that is very salient to voters

Trump is using election lies to lay the groundwork for challenging 2024 results if he loses

By JILL COLVIN NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has spent months laying the groundwork to challenge the results of the 2024 election if he loses — just as he did four years ago. At rally after rally, he urges his supporters to deliver a victory “too big to rig,” telling them the only way he can lose is if Democrats cheat. He has refused to say, repeatedly, whether he will accept the results regardless of the outcome. And he’s claimed cheating is already underway, citing debunked claims or outrageous theories with no basis in reality. “The only thing that can stop us is the cheating. It’s the only thing that can stop us,” he said at an event in Arizona late Thursday night. It’s a fight to the finish in races that will determine control of Congress

By Lisa Mascaro, AP Congressional Correspondent WASHINGTON (AP) — The final doors are being knocked, ads are blaring and candidates are making a last pitch to voters. Even with the high-energy final push, the races for control of Congress are at a stalemate, essentially a toss-up for the House and fight to the finish for the Senate. The outcome of Tuesday’s election will shape the country’s future, determining whether the new White House has allies or skeptics on Capitol Hill — or faces a divided Congress like this past session, which has been among the most tumultuous and unproductive in modern times. What to watch over the final weekend of the 2024 presidential campaign

By Steve Peoples, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The 2024 presidential contest speeds into its final weekend with Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump locked in a razor-thin contest. At this late stage in the campaign, every day matters. And while few voters might change their minds this late in a typical election, there is a sense that what happens in these final days could shift votes. Harris and Trump are crisscrossing the country to rally voters in the states that matter most. They’re trying — with varying degrees of success — to stay focused on a clear and concise closing message. At the same time, each side is investing massive resources to drive up turnout for the final early voting period. And in these critical days, the flow of misinformation is intensifying. Here’s what we’re watching on the final weekend before Election Day, which is Tuesday: Where will Harris and Trump be? You only need to look at the candidates’ schedules this weekend to know where this election will likely be decided. Note that schedules can and likely will change without warning.

TGI Fridays files for bankruptcy protection as sit-down restaurant struggles continue

Restaurant chain TGI Fridays filed for bankruptcy protection Saturday, saying it is looking for ways to “ensure the long-term viability” of the casual dining brand after closing many of its branches this year. The Dallas-based company’s Chapter 11 filing in a Texas federal court accelerates a gradual decline for an iconic chain that was once near the center of American pop culture but has seen its customer base dwindle as tastes changed. The company has boasted that its bartenders trained Tom Cruise for his role in the 1988 film “Cocktail.” Its serving staff’s button-filled uniforms, meant to evoke a fun atmosphere, were later parodied in the 1999 satire “Office Space,” starring Jennifer Aniston. Rohit Manocha, executive chairman of TGI Fridays, said in a statement that the “primary driver of our financial challenges resulted from COVID-19 and our capital structure.” Sit-down chain restaurants more broadly have faced challenges in recent years as diners choose to get food delivered or visit upscale fast-food chains like Chipotle and Shake Shack. In September a U.S. bankruptcy judge approved a reorganization plan for the seafood chain Red Lobster after years

Crews rescue pony trapped in a well at Lake Elsinore

A pony was rescued from a well in Lake Elsinore on Friday after a large response from local agencies. At about 2:52 p.m. Friday, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department got a call about a horse stuck in a well. Riverside County Animal Control arrived at the scene and discovered a pony stuck in a 20-feet-deep roadside square well, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Capt. John Clingingsmith Jr. He said five pieces of equipment and about 30 firefighters were in place to help get the animal out. Prior to authorities’ arrival, the homeowner placed wood and lumber down in the well to help the animal stay afloat, according to Clingingsmith. It is unknown how much water is in the well. “We can see the animal from the top. It is still moving. We have eyes on it,” Clingingsmith told freelance news videographer RVCNEWS. The Riverside City Fire Department’s Heavy Animal Rescue Team was requested by authorities. As for how the animal got stuck in the well, Clingingsmith said it appeared that there was an old weathered piece of plywood placed on top of the

Zelenskyy urges allies to act before North Korean troops reach the front

November 2, 2024 / 11:50 AM EDT / AP Russian, North Korean diplomats meet Russian, North Korean diplomats meet as troops move toward Ukraine 04:30 Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged its allies to stop “watching” and take steps before North Korean troops deployed in Russia reach the battlefield. Zelenskyy raised the prospect of a preemptive Ukrainian strike on camps where the North Korean troops are being trained and said Kyiv knows their location. But he said Ukraine can’t do it without permission from allies to use Western-made long-range weapons to hit targets deep inside Russia. “But instead … America is watching, Britain is watching, Germany is watching. Everyone is just waiting for the North Korean military to start attacking Ukrainians as well,” Zelenskyy said in a post late Friday on the Telegram messaging app. The Biden administration said Thursday that some 8,000 North Korean soldiers are now in Russia’s Kursk region near Ukraine’s border and are preparing to help the Kremlin fight against Ukrainian troops in the coming days. On Saturday, Ukraine’s military intelligence said that more than 7,000 North Koreans equipped with Russian gear

McDonald’s Customer Settles With Franchise Owner Over Hot Coffee Spill

A woman has tentatively settled her personal injury suit against a McDonald’s franchise owner after she allegedly suffered injuries while being handed a cup of hot coffee with an unfastened lid in the drive-through lane of a restaurant south of downtown in 2022. An attorney for Erika Nicole Turner filed court papers Thursday with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kerry Bensinger notifying him of a “conditional” resolution of her case against Sanchez Family Corp. IV with the expectation a request for dismissal will be filed by Dec. 30. No terms were revealed. In her case, brought Feb. 29, Turner says she bought the coffee at the McDonald’s restaurant in the 200 block of West Washington Boulevard on March 4, 2022. The cup’s lid was not sufficiently secured on the cup when an employee handed it to her, the suit alleges. The complaint further alleges that management had the obligation to operate the restaurant in a manner safe to customers and that their alleged failure to do so in Turner’s case has left her with both economic damages as well as pain and suffering. In their

Fall Back! Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday

If this weekend feels a little longer than usual, you’re right — thanks to the Sunday morning end of Daylight Saving Time. At 2 a.m. Sunday, California and most other states will “fall back” one hour as the state returns to Pacific Standard Time. As usual, fire officials urged residents to use the clock changing ritual as a reminder to replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as emergency flashlights. Residents were also urged to ensure the devices have not passed an expiration date, and to clear dust from slots or sensors. Smoke alarms have a life span of about 10 years and have the date stamped on the back, fire officials said. Fire officials recommend a smoke alarm with good batteries in all sleeping areas, one outside each bedroom and on each level of a home. Alarms should be mounted high on walls, four inches to a foot away from the ceiling, or on ceilings, at least four inches from the nearest wall. On pitched ceilings, they should be installed at least four inches from the highest point. Smoke detectors should

What record early voting could mean for this year’s election

As Election Day nears, tens of millions of voters have already cast their ballots throughout the country. Whether through mail-in ballots or early in-person polling stations, more than 68 million Americans, roughly 43% of the 2020 turnout, had voted against standing in line on Election Day as of Friday afternoon, according to data from the University of Florida’s Election Lab. Academic experts, reporters and pundits have been going through basic and limited data gleaned from the early voting numbers, trying to get clues about next week’s outcome. That picture, however, is not exactly black and white, according to Charles Stewart, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s election data science lab. “It’s like talking about the weather,” he said. “The candidates, the press, etcetera — really are trying to draw conclusions just on the face value of the data, but there really isn’t a lot there to say who is winning.” That said, Stewart said the early voting data does provide some insights when it comes to this year’s voting patterns and overall turnout — indicators that could help explain how the election turns out.

This red California county roiled by a far-right-insurgency braces for more trouble as election nears

As a devoted Republican who runs a cattle ranch and proudly talks about owning a gun, Shasta County Supervisor Mary Rickert is an unlikely progressive icon. But that is exactly what the 72-year-old devout Catholic and grandmother has become to some in this northern California county — which has been convulsed by conspiracy theories about voter fraud and other extremist ideologies over the last three years. Rickert is still a staunch conservative. But she has also emerged as an often lonely voice on the Board of Supervisors against a far-right insurgency that has roiled her county. (Shasta County) After an ultra-conservative majority took over in 2022, the board voted to dump Dominion voting machines in favor of hand-counting ballots. The supervisors passed a measure to allow concealed weapons in local government buildings in defiance of state law. And they explored hiring a California secessionist leader as the county’s chief executive. Rickert, whose personal style tends toward feathered blonde hair and flowy scarves, argued against much of what they did. On Tuesday, voters in her district, which stretches from Redding into the waterfalls and mountain peaks

Kawhi Leonard grabs 154 candy corn with one hand

He’s called “The Klaw” for a reason.  In the true spirit of Halloween, the Los Angeles Clippers had some players dig into a large bowl of candy corn to see just how many pieces they could pick up in one go.  As it turns out, grabbing candy corn is another thing Kawhi Leonard is exceptionally good at. The two-time NBA Finals MVP scooped up 154 individual pieces at once, which was the most on the team.  “I won?” he asked the camera, and upon confirming his victory, began clapping and even cracked a rare smile. “There it goes…big hands.”  The Los Angeles Clippers had some players dig into a large bowl of candy corn to see just how many pieces they could pick up in one go. (IG/@laclippers) The Los Angeles Clippers had some players dig into a large bowl of candy corn to see just how many pieces they could pick up in one go. (IG/@laclippers) The Los Angeles Clippers had some players dig into a large bowl of candy corn to see just how many pieces they could pick up in one go. (IG/@laclippers) And while
