UNLV releases video of campus shooter killed by police after 3 professors shot dead

By KEN RITTER (Associated Press) LAS VEGAS (AP) — Images of a campus police officer diving behind a patrol vehicle to escape gunfire and then fatally shooting a gunman outside a building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, are among footage in newly released video of a deadly rampage that left three professors dead and a fourth badly wounded last December. The deadly shootout captured by campus surveillance cameras ended what authorities say was 10 minutes of terror unleashed by a 67-year-old former business professor from North Carolina whose applications to teach at UNLV had been rejected. The gunman, Anthony Polito, was armed with a legally purchased 9 mm handgun, carried nine bullet magazines, and had a target list of names, although none of the people shot was on that list, police said. The university on Thursday released 20 hours of footage from campus security and officer body cameras, along with more than an hour of recordings of 911 calls made to campus police. Sounds of the gunfire that killed three people in upper floors of the five-story business school sent people fleeing from

Peace and quiet called my name. I found it at a Turks and Caicos resort

Carol Ann Davidson | Tribune News Service (TNS) Noise is my nemesis, quiet being one of my cherished but most elusive of holy grails. So when deciding where to go for a much-needed vacation at the beginning of March, I decided to spend it at a luxury resort, The Somerset on Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Fingers crossed that I would find a modicum of peace and serenity. I had viewed online photos and videos of the property. It certainly looked beautiful, but would it achieve my high standards for low decibels? This was my third trip to T&C, my first to The Somerset. It’s not the newest “kid on the block” (it was built in 2006). Shinier “kids” have arrived on the scene — a few of which I have visited — but there is something more genteel, relaxed and intimate about this property. It immediately felt like home. The Somerset oozed charm, without the noisy bells and whistles that many resorts display, mistaking intense activity and helicoptering attention for thoughtful but unobtrusive service. The stunning pools are a swimmer’s dream. The

A’s pitcher Stripling had backup plan in finance before MLB career took off

MESA – Ten years ago, Ross Stripling was sitting at home unable to pitch, wondering if Tommy John elbow surgery had derailed his career. Stripling, then 24, was a promising prospect fighting to earn a spot as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ No. 5 starter after coming off a season with a 2.82 earned run average in 127.2 innings between High-A and Double-A. During that recovery time, Stripling, who is scheduled to start tonight for the Oakland A’s against the Cleveland Guardians, made strides toward a backup plan if his playing career didn’t pan out – working in personal finance. The Texas A&M graduate with a degree in business finance did not originally plan to go down that route. After growing up in Southlake, Texas, Stripling enrolled at A&M for its highly esteemed engineering program. After a while, he decided to switch gears and pursue a finance degree. He said he enjoyed the way finances looked toward the future instead of the past. The initial interest came from his family. Through the years, Stripling slowly gained knowledge from both of his grandfathers who actively invested in

5 US cities perfect for a European vacation

Ebony Williams | (TNS) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution A trip across the pond has many amazing things to offer, like landmarks, history, food, art and museums — the experience alone can benefit the entire family. However, the No. 1 reason people don’t go on vacation is the cost. Being strapped for cash shouldn’t deny you the luxuries of experiencing European culture. Whether you need a passport or have to update one, can’t find the time to take off more than a week from work, or the cost isn’t appealing, you can still visit European-inspired sights right here in the United States. Here are five cities that have a European feel without the long flight. New Orleans Highly influenced by French and Spanish ways of life, New Orleans is a melting pot of cultures with a rich history. It was settled by the French and turned over to the Spaniards to settle a war debt. Spain ruled from 1763 to 1803. The city has boisterous music, authentic cuisine, art and museums to explore. Tarpon Springs, Florida Tarpon Springs has the look and feel of Greece; according to Tarpon Arts, it has the highest concentration

Review: Vicious ‘Dogman’ shows a director known for excess at his most unmuzzled

At their best, Luc Besson’s films occupy a different plane. His action-thrillers “The Professional” and “Lucy” may be set in our world, but the veteran French director seems to place them in a parallel realm, one powered by the loopy, escapist pleasures of movies themselves. Maybe that’s why, when he has ventured into more overt fantasy terrain like “The Fifth Element,” it has never been a perfect fit. For Besson, the ordinary is suffused with sufficient strangeness. But none of his previous efforts have exuded such a strong fairy-tale quality as “Dogman,” a strange, sincere paean to a brokenhearted outsider who may also be a sociopath. Part musical, part character study and part crime saga, this fatally uneven drama, about a damaged soul who finds comfort only in his canine companions, brings together Besson’s most extreme tendencies without the inspired feverishness. If not for Caleb Landry Jones in the title role, it wouldn’t work at all. Jones, who won an acting prize at Cannes in 2021 for portraying a burgeoning killer in “Nitram,” has made a habit of playing fragile men whose inevitable unraveling could

License plate readers and video cameras are coming to Orange to fight crime, officials say

Joining other Southern California municipalities, Orange has announced plans to add dozens of license plate readers and video cameras to its streets in an effort to catch criminals traveling through the city. The move represents a significant step forward for Orange, which is “a little bit behind the curve” in crime-fighting technology, Police Chief Dan Adams told the City Council this week. The cameras will give police information on vehicles entering and exiting Orange, which can then be shared with other law enforcement agencies in neighboring cities to catch suspects on the move. “The City of Orange is home to many retail establishments that are targets for organized retail theft, as well as other crimes, as perpetrators can quickly and easily access freeways in any direction and escape apprehension,” said a City Council staff report. The license plate readers and video cameras “will provide greater deterrence, coverage, and more detailed information for law enforcement to solve cases,” the report said. Orange is only the latest Southern California city to add the crime-fighting devices to its streets. Costa Mesa added 15 more license plate readers to

Ventura County water board member admits to stealing $30K in water

An elected member of a Ventura County water board has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of stealing water for his Oxnard farm. Daniel Naumann, 66, admitted to one count of grand theft of water, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said in a Friday news release. Daniel Naumann is seen in a photo posted to Facebook by the United Conservation Water District on Dec. 11, 2020. As part of his plea agreement, five other felony charges will be dropped, the Ventura County Star reports. Naumann, a Camarillo resident who is owner and operator of Naumann Family Farms, was an elected board member of the United Water Conservation District and an alternate board member of the Fox Canyon Groundwater Management Agency. “United and Fox Canyon manage and preserve groundwater resources for agricultural uses in Ventura County,” the VCDA’s Office said. “Both entities establish water allocations and charge agricultural user fees to pump groundwater. ” Despite those roles, Naumann took nearly $30,000 in water between 2019 and 2021 using “diversion bypasses [that] were installed on two commercial water pumps that irrigated Naumann’s crops,” the release stated. “The

California’s fast food minimum wage boost: Who gets raises and who doesn’t?

Starting Monday, April 1, fast food restaurants in California will be required to pay their workers at least $20 an hour when Assembly Bill 1228 finally takes effect. The polarizing law, which has been praised by advocates for low-income workers and blasted by the restaurant industry, is expected to lead to menu price increases at many popular chains, including McDonald’s and Chipotle. The quick-service restaurant industry employs at least 500,000 Californians, but how many of them qualify for the raise? The California Department of Industrial Relations has published a Frequently Asked Questions website about AB 1228 with the hope of clearing up any confusion. Among the more pressing questions are: what is considered a “fast food restaurant,” and which employees are covered by the new law? According to the state’s website, it must be a “limited-service restaurant … that offers limited or no table service, where customers order food or beverage items and pay for them before they are consumed.” Also, the food must be intended for “immediate consumption.” Los Angeles, CA – September 28:Gov. American Airlines changes its policy for bringing pets on flights

MoneyWatch Updated on: March 29, 2024 / 7:11 PM EDT / CBS/AP How accurate are pet DNA tests? How accurate are pet DNA tests? 02:30 American Airlines is relaxing part of its pet policy to let owners bring their animal companion and a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin. Until this week, people who carried a pet into the cabin, which involves paying a $150 fee, could only have one other small item that fit under the seat. Anything bigger, like a carry-on bag with wheels, needed to be checked for a $35 fee. Or they could put the pet in the cargo hold. Now American is letting passengers bring a pet in the cabin and also bring either a regular carry-on bag or a personal item — just not both bags. The old policy struck some pet owners as unfair, since they were already paying a pet fee. Passengers must still pay a fee, but their pet no longer counts as a carry-on. An American spokeswoman confirmed that the rules change took effect Thursday. She couldn’t explain the reason because the airline’s corporate offices

Majority of U.S. bridges lack impact protection. Will anything change?

CBS Evening News By Laura Geller , Stephen Stock , John Kelly , Josh Peña March 29, 2024 / 6:35 PM EDT / CBS News In the wake of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , which plunged into the Patapsco River in Maryland after the cargo ship Dali slammed into one of its support columns, CBS News has learned a majority of bridges in the U.S. lack any form of impact protection. Accidents like the one that destroyed the 47-year-old Baltimore bridge aren’t new. A similar collision in 1980 at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay killed 35 people. After that incident, codes changed and all bridges built after 1991 were required to have increased protection.  Structures called fenders and dolphins — which absorb impact, similar to the bumper on a car — are some of the methods used to keep bridges safe. Dash cam, alert CHP rookie help nab Interstate 880 road rage shooter

UNION CITY — The California Highway Patrol arrested a suspect in an Interstate 880 road rage shooting with the help of dashboard camera footage and an alert rookie officer, authorities said Friday. The shooting happened just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the northbound lanes of I-880 south of Alvarado-Niles Road in Union City. Before the gunfire, two 36-year-old men in separate vehicles began cutting each other off. The CHP said the 36-year-old Oakland man driving the green Toyota then shot at the van, shattering glass on the passenger side window. The victim driver, also 36, was not hit by a bullet but suffered minor injuries from the broken glass. He did not require hospitalization. The dashboard camera in the van recorded the shooting and captured images of the shooter, authorities said. CHP Officer Kylie Musselman said Friday the actual shooting was not reported until about 4 p.m. Wednesday, when the head of the company that owns the van notified the CHP and he and the victim came to the agency’s Hayward office. Musselman said it turned out that before that happened, CHP Officer Jan Manalac
