Ask Amy: Our kids have seen us drunk. Should we tell them the whole story?

DEAR AMY: I am a 42-year-old man. My wife is 40. We were both abused as children. I like to drink, and now my wife has followed this path. Columnist Amy Dickinson (Bill Hogan/Chicago Tribune)  We have two kids, whom we love very much. Should we tell our kids about our past troubles? We have done very well for ourselves. Our kids are great. They know we love them, and they have done very well. Obviously, they see us drink too much at times. The oldest is going off to college. He is a top-notch kid and he knows we love him. I’ve told him about the genetics of alcohol (it does run in our family), but should I tell him about the abuse? Harriette Cole: How can I tell if he’s going to hurt himself?

DEAR HARRIETTE: I have a friend who has told me he is depressed. He has a therapist and seems to be working through his issues, but I worry about him. Harriette Cole  With so many stories of suicide these days, I don’t want to be the friend who didn’t notice the warning signs. He does still talk to me, and he says that he is seeking help. He broke up with his girlfriend about a year ago, and he hasn’t been right since. I want to be the best friend that I can be to him during this time. What do you recommend? Fighting Depression DEAR FIGHTING DEPRESSION: Continue to stay in close communication with your friend. Be a good listener. Notice if his conversation changes in a way that might indicate a pivot toward self-harm. If so, ask him if he is following his therapist’s directions and if he needs more support. Otherwise, without casting any judgment, keep him engaged. Let him know how much you care about him, avoid offering your evaluation of his situation and remind him that you want the best…

Miss Manners: Barista has some nerve to do his job without a smile

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Since relocating two years ago, I walk two blocks to the same local coffee shop to order a morning coffee and latte for my wife and me. As I’m a recognized regular patron, I’ve come to know nearly every member of the staff. I always greet them with a warm hello, and they respond in kind — that is, except for one curmudgeon of a cashier. Judith Martin  I know he knows I’m a regular, because he knows our drink order by heart, as well as my name. But for whatever reason, he has never once even attempted to be cordial. When I greet him with a friendly, “Good morning!” he responds with a gruff “The usual?” No smile, no greeting, no mention of my name … nothing. He just fills my order, takes my payment and that’s it. Should I bring up his curt behavior with the store manager, who is always friendly to me? Or should I simply accept that this is his normal demeanor? I know it’s a small thing, but it’s really starting to rub me the wrong…

Dear Abby: Teenage girls invaded our house and refused to leave

DEAR ABBY: On a recent Saturday afternoon, two of my daughter’s 13-year-old friends came to our house. My daughter answered the door, and after her friends were denied access, they pushed their way in. Jeanne Phillips  During their stay, the girls were rude and disrespectful, going through the refrigerator and pantry and helping themselves to whatever they wished. My wife and daughter repeatedly asked them to leave, but the girls laughed and ignored the requests. What do you suggest in an event such as this without getting physical, as my wife didn’t have their parents’ phone numbers? (I was away on a work trip during all of this.) CARMICHAEL (CBS13) – Candles were flickering bright.  Eyes were pouring out tears. Hugs were being had by family and friends mourning the loss of Paul McIntyre, 57, and Eileen Stanwick, 53, who were both were stabbed to death on Friday at the Wellness and Recovery Center in Carmichael. Barbara McIntyre said her husband overcame many challenges in his life. “Paul was a brilliant blind man,” she said. “He went all over the city with no help from anybody, just him and his cane.” She told CBS13 her husband was defenseless that horrifying day. “How would defend himself? How would he know which direction to run? How would he even know that it was coming?” she said. Barbara McIntyre said that she found out through family members of other victims that her husband was helping Stanwick as he was stabbing by the suspect. Another family is also grieving and trying to find ways to overcome this tragedy — Eileen Stanwick’s family.  The tragedy has hit her son JC Anderson especially hard. “She helped me through a lot of hard times when I was going through the…

North Korea fires 2 unidentified projectiles, South Korea says

North Korea has fired two unidentified short-range projectiles from an area near the coastal city of Wonsan into waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, South Korea’s military said Monday. The objects were fired at 12:37 p.m. Korea time and estimated to have a flight distance of 149 miles and altitude of 22 miles, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. The projectiles are likely part of North Korea’s combined military drills, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The drills began on Friday, the one-year anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un’s summit in Hanoi with US President Donald Trump that ended without a deal. North Korean state media reported that Kim presided over the exercise, which was intended to “judge the mobility and the fire power strike ability of the defense units.” Japan’s Defense Ministry said it could not yet confirm if the projectiles landed inside its territory or exclusive economic zone, and said no damage had been reported to aircraft or vessels in the area. “The recent repeated launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea is a serious problem for the…
