New details, footage of driver who fatally struck 57-year-old man in San Fernando Valley

Police revealed new details and footage on Thursday of a driver they believe fatally struck a 57-year-old man in the San Fernando Valley last month. The Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who was driving a newer model white Dodger Charger during the fatal hit-and-run on Nov. 27. According to a news release issued by the LAPD, the unidentified victim was crossing Terra Bella Street at Dorrington Avenue around 9:20 p.m. when the suspect vehicle, traveling westbound on Terra Bella at a high rate of speed, struck the pedestrian.  Police said the driver fled westbound and did not stop to aid the victim as required by law. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene. In Thursday’s update, LAPD said that after the collision, the driver made several turns into various side streets and then fled southbound Woodman Avenue.  “The driver then drove the vehicle to a parking lot in the 8900 block of Woodman Avenue where it was seen being towed on November 29, 2024,” stated the LAPD release. The department also pointed out

LB Campbell quits on 49ers during loss to Rams

De’Vondre Campbell did not want to play football on Thursday night, so he told 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan how he felt, then left Levi’s Stadium. Shanahan was asked in his postgame media session why Campbell went to the locker room in the third quarter of the 49ers’ 12-6 loss to the Rams. “Yeah, he said he didn’t want to play today,” Shanahan said. Shanahan told reporters that he asked Campbell if he wanted to go into the game in the third quarter to spell returning starter Dre Greenlaw, and Campbell declined without giving a reason. Campbell was not in the locker room postgame when reporters were allowed in to speak to players. Shanahan said he did not know immediately whether the team would release Campbell, a 31-year-old former All-Pro who signed with the 49ers in March after being released by Green Bay. 49ers Studs and Duds: The Niners’ offense melts in the rain in hope-ending loss to Rams

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers came into this season with unjustified bravado and confidence. They exited with a whimper, failing to score a touchdown and falling to 1-4 in the division with a season-ending 12-6 loss to the Rams on Thursday Night Football. There’s no need to worry about playoff possibilities anymore. At 6-8 on the season, the Niners are done. And they have no one to blame but themselves. Dre Greenlaw • LB Playing his first game in nine months, Greenlaw wasted no time in making his presence known. He was everywhere, registering ten tackles in the first half and shutting down the Rams defense almost singlehandedly. When he left the game, the Rams relentlessly attacked his backup, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles. (Who was playing over De’Vondre Campbell and the injured Dee Winters.) Fred Warner • LB His finest game since he broke a bone in his ankle against New England in Week 4. Warner was a menace in both the run game and pass coverage, totaling 13 tackles Thursday. He held the defense together for a stretch with Greenlaw out of the contest. Together, they

Instant analysis of 49ers’ 12-6 loss to Rams as playoff hopes essentially vanish

SANTA CLARA – If the 49ers were bound to vanish from playoff contention by mid-December, it only made sense for them to blow another NFC West game in the fourth quarter. This time the 49ers had only a 6-3 lead to protect, and, in the end, they walked off their soggy field Thursday night with a 12-6 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Along the way, one 49ers stunningly opted out of the game: Ninth-year veteran De’Vondre Campbell refused to replace injured linebacker Dre Greenlaw in the third quarter, at which point the Rams were seizing momentum. That unexplained betrayal left teammates seething, even more so than any chatter about their playoff hopes essentially expiring. Officially, the reigning NFC champs are not eliminated. But, with a 6-8 record overall and a 1-4 mark in division games, the 49ers’ playoff chances are less than 1 percent, according to the New York Times’ simulator. Thursday night’s turning point wasn’t Joshua Karty’s third field goal of the night that gave the Rams (8-6) their first lead with 9:29 remaining. Rather, take your pick of the 49ers’ turn for the

Celebrini puts on a show as Sharks beat Blues, end losing skid

Nobody on the San Jose Sharks roster is more disappointed that their season series with the St. Louis Blues is over than Macklin Celebrini. Celebrini dazzled on Thursday night, scoring twice and adding an assist as the Sharks held on to beat the Blues 4-3 to snap a three-game losing streak and finish a 13-day road trip with a 3-3-0 record. New Sharks forward Nikolai Kovalenko had his first career three-point game with three assists, and goalie Alexandar Georgiev made 17 saves, including six in a tense third period, to win in his San Jose debut. The Sharks finished with 21 blocked shots, including seven in the final 8:20 of regulation time, and went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. “It took everyone,” Celebrini said on NBC Sports California. “With those penalties, we had so many blocked shots and guys selling themselves out. That’s the reason we won that game.” Celebrini assisted on Tyler Toffoli’s first-period goal and scored at the 5:43 and 19:53 marks of the second period to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead and register his second career three-point game. Celebrini’s first goal

Record Players Are Hot for the Holidays

Record players are hot for the holidays. It’s been the case for a few years. I think most people assumed the re-emergence of vinyl records was a nostalgia play and would go the way of the Furby. Vinyl records are still around, and sales are still growing. Technologies rarely get a second chance, so why is it that vinyl records, well down the road to obscurity, get sucked back into the cultural milieu? Humans are bad at predicting the future. Flying cars and robot maids for everyone seemed inevitable in the last century but are now no more than dead fantasies. Isn’t it a little interesting that the technologies that seemed like logical progression never came to be and the truly revolutionary advancements that DID happen weren’t ever on our radar? In 1970 flying cars were an inevitability but a tiny computer that could access nearly every song and movie from your pocket was never mentioned. Streaming music is a big part of my life. It is my main method of consumption. I listen to music mostly in my car, and I’m not embarrassed to admit I had a 100

Authorities Seek Help Locating 28-Year-Old Man

Authorities sought the public’s help Thursday in locating a 28-year-old man last seen in Lakewood. Collin Anthony Thorpe II was last seen Wednesday around 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Loomis Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Thorpe was described as a 5-foot-11-inch tall Black man weighing 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of flowers on his left arm, Chinese lettering on his right arm, dental braces and a goatee. Thorpe was last seen wearing cream-colored shorts and a black and gray shirt. LA Based Marijuana Brand Stiizy Sued by Sisters Alleging Psychosis

Marijuana brand Stiiizy’s products are causing young people to suffer cannabis-induced psychosis that has reached epidemic levels among California’s youth, who are induced by such tactics as having rappers show up at dispensary openings, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by twin sisters. The plaintiffs in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit are identified only as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. Their allegations include fraud, strict products liability, negligence and fraud. The women seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. “Stiizy’s conduct and products are causing young people to suffer cannabis-induced psychosis and driving an epidemic of CIP among California’s youth,” the suit states. CIP is not a bad high or a bad trip, but instead an acute psychological event that can require years of treatment, including the use of anti-psychotic medication, according to the suit. A representative for Los Angeles-based Stiizy did not immediately reply to a request for comment. When Stiizy opened its Pomona dispensary in June 2021, appearances were made by rappers Xzibit and Too Short, according to the suit, which also states that Stiiizy collaborated with the four-day Rolling Loud

2 cats die from possible H5 bird flu in Los Angeles County

Health officials are investigating possible cases of H5 bird flu after two cats died from consuming recalled raw milk, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The department issued a release on Thursday saying the two cats that died consumed milk from Raw Farm, LLC after the company voluntarily recalled all raw milk and cream products earlier this month. After consuming the raw milk, the cats reportedly showed onset symptoms of lack of appetite, fever and neurologic signs. “The infected cats died after severe worsening of their illness, and subsequently tested positive for Influenza A, a rare result in cats,” said the department in a release. As the department waits to obtain confirmatory testing, it notes that the nationwide H5 bird flu outbreak has seen other cats infected with the virus after drinking infected raw milk. “The risk of H5 bird flu remains low in Los Angeles County, but this suspected case of the virus in a pet cat that consumed raw milk is a reminder that consuming raw dairy products can lead to severe illness in cats,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer

Rams take big step toward playoffs by winning field-goal battle and sweeping 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.  —  It’s happening. Again. The Rams rebounded from a dismal first half of the season and they are making a run for the playoffs. Again. Despite a nebulous performance on offense against the San Francisco 49ers, coach Sean McVay’s team is now the one nobody in the NFL wants to play. Again. On Thursday night, the Rams defeated the 49ers 12-6 at Levi’s Stadium. Joshua Karty kicked four field goals, Kyren Williams rushed for 108 yards, and cornerback Darious Williams intercepted a fourth-quarter pass as the Rams improved to 8-6. The Rams’ Kyren Williams (23) finds running room against the 49ers. (Jed Jacobsohn / Associated Press) While it might have been painful to watch, it left the Rams feeling great. “No style points,” McVay said, “We’ll take it. Proud of this group.” With good reason. The Rams have won three games in a row for the first time in a season that began with a 1-4 start. They also swept the defending NFC champion 49ers for the first time since 2018, when McVay led the Rams to Super Bowl LIII in his

Man accused of breaking into Linda Vista home and molesting child to stand trial

A man who allegedly sneaked into a Linda Vista home and sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl inside the residence was ordered Thursday to stand trial on charges that include lewd acts on a child and burglary. Alejandro Jose Confesor, 23, is accused of entering a Wellington Street home around 1:45 a.m. on April 18 and sexually abusing the child in her bedroom. San Diego police say video surveillance captured Confesor returning to the same home three days later about 3:30 a.m. He is not accused of harming anyone in the home on that day, but is accused of taking items from the home’s garage. He’s also accused of unlawfully entering another home and a person’s vehicle in the same neighborhood. Prosecutors say Confesor has no relationship with the victims. Confesor was arrested on the night of April 21 on Linda Vista Road, less than 2 miles from the Wellington Street address. After Confesor’s arrest, police found he had items stolen from the home where the girl was allegedly molested, according to testimony from a preliminary hearing held on Thursday. Confesor also allegedly had a picture

Months into his tenure, Parker resigns as San Diego police commission executive

Paul Parker, who parlayed a career as a police officer into broader work in forensic pathology and civilian oversight of law enforcement, resigned Thursday as leader of the San Diego Commission on Police Practices, the monitoring board that hired him barely six months ago. He was brought in to serve as executive director of the San Diego commission earlier this year, when city officials heralded him as the leader the long-stalled board needed. Parker is also the former executive officer of the county Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the oversight body for the Sheriff’s Office and Probation Department. He quit that job in March, citing frustrations over slow progress and resistance to proposed reforms and policy recommendations. The latest resignation was submitted to the city oversight board in a letter Thursday. His last day at the city will be Friday, Jan. 3, 2025. “I appreciate having had the opportunity and am humbled by the trust you folks placed in me,” Parker wrote in his letter. “Unfortunately, over the past few months, it has become increasingly clear that I am not the right person for this

Prosecutors say rapper Lil Durk may be linked to second killing as judge orders him jailed in L.A. case

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that rapper Lil Durk, who is accused of commissioning a murder two years ago in Los Angeles, may be linked to another killing in Chicago — allegations that helped convince a judge to order the Grammy Award winner to remain jailed as his case proceeds. During a detention hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Donahue said the 32-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Durk Devontay Banks, has significant resources and the ability to flee. Lawyers for Banks had pressed for his release, offering a bond secured by $2.3 million in equity in two homes in Georgia and $1 million in cash. They also said they would hire around-the-clock security to ensure compliance with conditions imposed by the court. More than 30 people, including family, friends and Sony Music representatives, packed into the courtroom, which Assistant U.S. Atty. Ian Yanniello said demonstrated the fact that Banks “is a powerful and influential man who has significant resources.” “This case is about how he used that power and used that influence and how he used those resources to promote and perpetuate violence with deadly consequence,”
