Never in doubt: De La Salle dominates in shutout win over San Ramon Valley

DANVILLE — The energy inside Rick Steen Ballpark could be felt from across San Ramon Valley’s campus. Local residents from nearby apartments tuned in from their balcony to watch Wednesday’s highly anticipated matchup between two East Bay Athletic league rivals. While De La Salle and SRV battled it out on the diamond, fans of both teams kept the stands rocking with loud cheers and a little bit of friendly trash talk. But in the end it was De La Salle that came out on top, dominating on both sides of the ball to cruise to an 11-0 victory on the road. De La Salle senior Joe McGee and sophomore Tyler Spangler each had a home run. Graham Schlicht pitched a two-hitter in five innings and struck out six. “This game was really important to us,” Spangler said. “ With SRV being our rivals, we just wanted to play a great game.” De La Salle’s Joe McGee (8) hits a three-run home run against San Ramon Valley at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Roughly 80 employees protested in the afternoon outside Google’s complexes, demanding the company drop Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract that provides computing services to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. They also called on the company to stop the harassment, intimidation and censorship of Muslim, Arab and Palestinian employees. After the protest cleared at 1:30 p.m., five remained in the complex and were allowed to stay by Google, but refused to leave at 6:30 p.m. when they were asked to leave, according to Sunnyvale police Capt. Dzanh Le. The arrestees were booked at the police department and released on a citation that same night. “We were called back by Google. They wanted the individuals to leave but they refused the request,” Le said. “We asked them to leave and they refused again.” Advocate group Notech4apartheid, which also helped organize the protest, claimed in a live Twitch stream of the incident that they sat inside the office of Thomas

San Bernardino council censures Kimberly Calvin for ‘policy, law, fiduciary’ violations

With no discussion, the San Bernardino City Council voted Wednesday, April 17, to censure one of its own in the aftermath of a report that found her responsible for leaks of confidential information. San Bernardino Councilwoman Kimberly Calvin (Courtesy photo) The council voted 4-3 to formally censure Councilmember Kimberly Calvin for allegedly violating her “policy, law and fiduciary duty” as an elected official, according to a staff report prepared for the meeting. Censures are public reprimands. They don’t come with a fine or suspension attached. The vote comes a day after the city released an investigation into recent council leaks that found a “preponderance of credible evidence overwhelmingly points to Calvin as the originator of the closed-session leaks,” mostly concerning San Bernardino’s search for a new city manager in late 2023. Before the council’s vote, Calvin addressed her colleagues to deny any wrongdoing. According to her, the timelines in the investigation report prepared by Laguna Niguel-based JL Group LLC are not clear. Calvin said she stands alone on the dais on several issues, and touted her work for the 6th Ward community and throughout the city. When

Klay Thompson really, really doesn’t want to talk about his free agency

SAN FRANCISCO — Inside a Chase Center already turned over for a quiet summer, Klay Thompson sat down at the podium with a fat lip and a twinkle in his eye. A smirk formed around the corner of his lips as he batted down the first question about his future. He’d be naive if he didn’t expect to be asked about his pending free agency. But he wanted to get what seemed like a planned routine off his chest. “You don’t want to talk about the season first?” Thompson asked rhetorically. “You want to talk about the future? That was a lot of games played, man. That was a pretty big accomplishment. What’s up with y’all not wanting to live in the present, bro? It’s ridiculous.” The thing is, Thompson’s present is exactly what he doesn’t want to broach. His free-agency future, which has been on the horizon all year, is here. Even if he’s not officially a free agent until July 1, everyone knows he may have played his last game in a Warriors uniform on Tuesday night. And it was an absolutely brutal

Disneyland’s $1.9-billion expansion project is latest mega investment in the Anaheim resort

Walt Disney famously said that Disneyland will never be completed. He was right. The vote by the Anaheim City Council on Wednesday to approve the Disneyland resort’s $1.9-billion expansion plan is the latest of several huge investments made by the media giant at the 100-acre facility known to its fans as the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Once upon a time, Disneyland was just a concept that grew out of a visit by Disney to Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Then on July 17, 1955, the gates were flung open at the then-$17.5-million resort and things have never been the same for the city of Anaheim. Ticket prices on opening day were $1 for an adult and 50 cents for a child, with each attraction charging extra at each location, ranging from 10 to 35 cents. Over the decades, the resort has added new attractions and entire worlds built around new franchises acquired by Disney. Bear Country opened in 1972 and gave way to Critter Country in 1988 in anticipation of Splash Mountain, which eventually closed in May 2023. Splash Mountain will be reopened later this

Fire recruit killed on freeway had been in collision before exiting vehicle, CHP says

A Los Angeles Fire Department recruit fatally struck on the 101 Freeway early Monday morning was initially involved in a two-car collision before exiting his vehicle and being hit, a California Highway Patrol collision report has confirmed. Jacob Fuerte, 22, of Riverside was killed just after 5 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway at Campo De Cuehenga , south of the Vineland Avenue offramp in Studio City, according to the CHP report. Initial reports said Fuerte was rendering aid and may have been in a prior collision. Fuerte was en route to the Fire Department’s Drill Tower Academy for training, fire officials confirmed. The CHP report said that Fuerte’s vehicle had collided with a 2021 Ford sedan driven by a 36-year-old Montclair man. Woman violently assaulted on street, robbed of purse in Southern California

Police are searching for a man responsible for a violent assault and robbery of a woman earlier this week in San Fernando, authorities confirmed to KTLA.   The broad daylight attack occurred on April 15 just before 3 p.m. in the 200 block of Park Avenue. The victim, Juliana Murillo, had just bought her mother a bouquet of flowers for her birthday when her attacker came up from behind as she was just outside her apartment building and violently knocked her down, sending everything she was holding, including the flowers, to the ground. “He pushed me really hard and I hit my head on the door,” Murillo told KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “My body just went into shock. I couldn’t process what was going on. I kept saying, ‘What are you doing, what are you doing?’ He used force to turn me over and he pulled out my purse and took off.” Despite the hit to her head, Murillo was able to put up a fight, struggling with the man, who eventually made off with her purse, which carried her car keys, credit cards and identification.
