Chipotle is raising prices, but with a promise to customers

Chipotle is raising its U.S. prices to offset inflation and to compensate for a promise to increase portion sizes. Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, confirmed Friday that the Mexican restaurant chain was implementing a 2% price increase nationally. Schalow said it’s the first time the California-based company has raised its prices in more than a year. Chipotle revealed the price increase after an analyst report released earlier this week by investment bank Truist Securities noted a 2% price increase at approximately 20% of the chain’s 3,500 U.S. stores. Truist, which raised its price target for Chipotle’s shares, also reported that customer traffic at the chain’s restaurants accelerated in November. How fast food prices in California have changed since the minimum wage hike Chipotle said in October that its food, beverage and packaging costs all increased in the third quarter. It cited avocados as an example. Avocado shipments from Mexico to the U.S. were briefly suspended in June after two U.S. Department of Agriculture employees were assaulted and temporarily held by assailants in the Mexican state of Michoacan. Chipotle also cited the cost of

Transient encampment fire could have started larger blaze, deputies say

Two residents of a homeless encampment in Oxnard were arrested Tuesday for lighting a fire in an area that authorities said could have resulted in a wildfire. Roberto Banuelos, 43, and Alejandro Ruiz, 29, used a propane torch to set a blaze at an illegal encampment in the 5000 block of West Gonzales Road, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Officials said the encampment is in an area with “several privately owned and maintained agricultural and industrial properties,” and the fire itself was “surrounded by a large amount of dry brush and dead shrubbery.” “Deputies learned Banuelos and Ruiz were illegally camping on the property and lit the fire with a propane torch,” the release added. The fire was extinguished, as “any fires in an encampment, regardless of size, pose a significant threat to public safety,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Due to the rural areas of encampments, fires often spread uncontrolled. These fires pose a threat to others in the area and require numerous resources due to their remote locations. They also damage local habitats, along with threatening wildlife, and endangered species,” the

Another California fentanyl dealer heads to prison for murder after buyer’s overdose

A 23-year-old Placer County man will soon begin serving a decades-long prison sentence after he was convicted of murder for providing the fentanyl that killed a soon-to-be father struggling with addiction. Carson Schewe was sentenced to 20 years to life Thursday after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder for his role in the 2021 death of Kade Webb, who prosecutors said ingested a pill he purchased from Schewe that contained a fatal dose of fentanyl. This case is among the first in California to successfully convict drug dealers of murder for providing a deadly dose of fentanyl, a legal practice that has increasingly gained prominence across the state as overdoses from the synthetic opioid have skyrocketed in recent years. Placer County has led the way with such cases in California, securing the first fentanyl-related homicide conviction last year, when a 22-year-old pleaded guilty to murder after selling drugs to a teenager that resulted in the teen’s death. According to the Placer County district attorney, the case against Schewe is California’s second fentanyl-related murder conviction by jury trial. “I hope and pray for the

Review: Reconceiving the scare that wasn’t, ‘Y2K’ is horror-comedy for nostalgic millennials

“Saturday Night Live” alum Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut, “Y2K,” makes for a fascinating test case of Gen Z’s appetite for all things 2000s. His comedic sensibility, honed through throwback TV parodies on “SNL,” is at once broad and hyper-specific. In the nostalgic “Y2K,” he hits the big signposts that will delight the younger generation craving the simpler times of a pre-9/11 world, but he also gets granular with late ’90s music, fashion and culture in a way that one could only understand if they actually lived through it. Zoomers just won’t pick up everything he’s putting down, and that may work against this otherwise exuberant and somewhat messy teen horror-comedy. Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter fuse the “let’s throw a big party” plot formula to “The Terminator” for their “Y2K” script, but it also feels like they just wrote down everything they could remember from the late ’90s and threw it at the wall: Enron, the “Macarena,” PalmPilots, Limp Bizkit, the swing revival. Some are quite obvious and on-the-nose, others more arcane. Add in some well-worn movie tropes, a list of outrageous horror movie kills

These glasses let you ‘see’ conversations in real time

When I heard about AI glasses that let you “see” what people are saying, I was skeptical. But after trying them on, I was proven wrong. The Hearview AI Subtitle Glasses give you closed captions for the real world. The right lens has a small, transparent display that shows you conversations, but you can still see the people you’re talking to. “The mission is to help using the technology to help others,” said Ting Chen, Vice President of Marketing for the company behind the glasses. The glasses are lightweight but a bit thicker than your typical spectacles. They connect wirelessly to a smartphone, which uses the Hearview app to listen to what people are saying. Those conversations are transcribed in near real time using AI, and then the words are displayed on the tiny see through screen. The system seems to be very accurate and works with 13 languages – and although there is a bit of a delay, it won’t necessarily matter if you can’t hear the words being spoken out loud. The glasses come in one style but can be outfitted with a

Trump talks up his transition and election victory as he receives Fox Nation award

By JILL COLVIN GREENVALE, N.Y. (AP) — Not yet even in office, Donald Trump said Thursday he’s already accomplished more than President Joe Biden did in his entire term, an outsized claim by the president-elect just a month out from the election. Trump, who has been largely ensconced at his Mar-a-Lago club in recent weeks as he’s worked to staff his new administration, made the comment as he ventured to New York’s Long Island to be honored as part of Fox Nation’s annual Patriot Awards on Fox’s streaming platform. “I think you have seen more happen in the last two weeks than you have in the last four years,” Trump told the crowd at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. “It was a tremendous day, a tremendous night,” he said, recalling his election victory in a 10-minute acceptance speech that sounded like a highlight reel of his campaign rally speeches. It came complete with a live performance of “God Bless the USA” by the singer Lee Greenwood, calls to “get the criminals out of our country” and an embrace of all-paper election ballots and

Naked man tied to nearby homicide arrested with ax on Ventura County high school football field

A naked man arrested at a Ventura County high school was linked to a killing at a nearby home, according to reports. The 24-year-old man, identified in sheriff radio communications and booking records as Zuberi Sharp, was being investigated for a death Thursday at a house in the 400 block of Jeanne Court. Ventura County Sheriff’s Captain Ken Truitt said the person who called police was hysterical and said her baby had been murdered, according to the Ventura County Star. The man was arrested around 8 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies who were chasing him said that he was armed with an ax, according to recordings of radio communications during the incident. They also suggested the ax might be tied to the death on Jeanne Court. “The item used, which was an ax, is probably still in his possession,” said one deputy, according to the radio communication. The sheriff’s deputies called to lock down Newbury Park High School after the man ran onto campus and got onto the football field. Many students were still at the school despite the late hour. The teen victim, who was a

Man jailed for death of woman at “slapping therapy” workshop

December 6, 2024 / 12:07 PM EST / CBS/AP An alternative healer who advocated “slapping therapy” to treat a range of maladies was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for the death of a 71-year-old diabetic woman who stopped taking insulin during one of his workshops. Hongchi Xiao, 61, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence for failing to get medical help for Danielle Carr-Gomm as she howled in pain and frothed at the mouth during the fourth day of a workshop in October 2016. Xiao, of Cloudbreak, California, promoted paida lajin therapy, getting patients to slap themselves repeatedly to release “poisonous waste” from the body. The technique has its roots in Chinese medicine but critics say it has no scientific basis and patients often end up with bruises, bleeding – or worse. Carr-Gomm was one of two of Xiao’s patients who died. He was extradited from Australia, where he had been convicted of manslaughter after a 6-year-old boy died when his parents withdrew his insulin medication after attending one of his workshops in Sydney. “I consider you dangerous even though you do not

The manslaughter charge carries with it up to 15 years in prison if convicted.  The judge instructed the jury at the beginning of deliberations that they must agree on the manslaughter charge before they
