Sharks takeaways: The Smiths make an impact, an elusive identity and what’s left to decide?

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks have just one preseason game left after their 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at SAP Center. Klim Kostin and Henry Thrun scored and goalie Vitek Vanecek finished with 40 saves in regulation time and overtime as the Sharks fell to 1-3-1 this preseason. San Jose, which did not score in the shootout, closes its exhibition schedule Saturday night in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights. The Sharks have declared nothing, but it would appear — at the moment — that only one or two spots on the team’s 23-man roster are available. One of those final decisions might be whether to keep a heavyweight forward like Givani Smith to help offer more protection to Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith or a prospect like Danil Gushchin or even Ethan Cardwell. If that’s the case, the Sharks’ simple decision would be to keep the 26-year-old Givani Smith, who would need to be placed on waivers to be sent to the AHL, and assign the others, who do not need waivers, to the Barracuda. You Might Catch the Northern Lights Tonight in Humboldt

If you missed the northern lights that showed up in May, you might get another chance to catch a glimpse of them this weekend. A geomagnetic storm watch was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for Oct. 4 through Oct. 6. This was announced after two solar flares were recorded by the NOAA on Wednesday and Thursday, one being the largest solar flare since 2017 recorded at X9.0. The flares have produced a pair of coronal mass ejections, an expulsion of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun, which increases the likelihood of the northern lights appearing. The northern United States can expect to see the lights this weekend, and the northern most parts of California could have a chance of seeing the lights, depending on the strength of the storm, according to Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center who spoke with the San Francisco Chronicle. Geomagnetic storms are categorized from a scale of G1 (minor) to G5 (severe), and the upcoming storm is expected to be a G3. Depending on the power of the storm, the likelihood

Thieves hit Brentwood homes, neighbors find about $15K worth of items stolen

Thieves ransacked a pair of homes on Thursday night in Brentwood, and both neighbors reported losing about $15,000 worth of items. Security footage from one home shows three masked suspects crawling under patio furniture before entering through an open window. The homeowner, Simon House, told KTLA’s Ellina Abovian that he was eating dinner nearby with his girlfriend when they received an alert on the Ring app. House said they’d left the window open for fresh air. Once home, they found their belongings thrown all over the house. “You just feel violated, like your personal space has been taken advantage of,” he said. House said when he spoke with his neighbor on Friday morning, he learned her house was hit shortly after the security footage showed the thieves leaving his property. The neighbor found a glass door and window broken, and the suspects escaped with jewelry and other valuables. “Something needs to be done,” said House. “I don’t know if that’s harsher penalties, but something’s gotta be done.”

The NBA’s first on-court father-son duo will have to wait until at least Sunday following coach JJ Redick’s announcement that LeBron James won’t play in Friday evening’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Acrisure Arena. Starting center Anthony Davis also won’t play, Redick said. They will be replaced in the starting lineup by center Jaxson Hayes and forward Max Christie. Rui Hachimura will be the other starting forward while Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell will start in the backcourt. Redick had said Thursday James and Davis would play this weekend but did not specify if or how much they would play Friday or Sunday against the Phoenix Suns, also at Acrisure Arena. “We’re still talking through what minutes and rotations look like — we have a general idea of what that looks like for all of preseason, but trying to figure out what makes the most sense,” Redick said after practice at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo. “Our framework for a plan is based on real time and on how these guys feel.” Friday’s game will mark the NBA preseason debut of

L.A. serial arson suspect arrested, accused of lighting string of downtown fires

A man suspected of starting a string of fires in downtown Los Angeles — including a blaze that required 170 firefighters to extinguish and caused $7 million in damage — was arrested Friday, authorities said. The Los Angeles Fire Department identified the suspect as Victor Marias, 31. The department presented the case to the L.A. County district attorney’s office on Friday and recommended filing multiple felony arson charges against him, along with a probation violation. “We view the crime of arson as one of the most egregious offenses in Los Angeles, and the LAFD Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section uses every resource available to investigate and prosecute those that are responsible,” LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said in a video shared by the department. Those recent fires included a massive blaze on Kohler Street on July 19, which spread to several commercial buildings and took more than five hours to extinguish — resulting in more than $7 million in damage and injuring one firefighter, authorities said. Investigators used surveillance camera video to identify a suspect and determine that the fire was started intentionally. Authorities allege Marias started the fire

Padres coy about how they plan to stop Shohei Ohtani: ‘I’m not telling you’

The first laugh line of this National League Division Series came Friday afternoon, when San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt was asked how his club planned to attack Shohei Ohtani. “I’m not telling you,” Shildt responded with a chuckle, one reciprocated by the mass of media members at his news conference. “He’s a great player, he’s having an historic year,” Shildt added. “But we feel good about our plan.” The second moment of levity, on the eve of the best-of-five Dodgers-Padres series, came a few hours later. And this time, it was prompted by Ohtani himself. Sitting in the same chair inside the Dodger Stadium interview room, Ohtani was asked if he was nervous about his first MLB postseason, which began with Game 1 on Saturday night. To his left, interpreter Will Ireton started to translate the question to Japanese. Before he could finish, Ohtani answered in English. “Nope,” he said with a quick smirk and a soft shake of his head to more laughter. Of all the factors that could determine the NLDS, Ohtani’s performance might loom largest. And he played well against the

Safe sleeping site residents raise concerns about rats as San Diego prepares to expand both lots

Two prominent advocates for homeless residents say rats, heat and other problems threaten the hundreds of people sleeping at San Diego’s designated camping areas as the city prepares to expand both projects. The pair released a petition signed by more than 100 individuals who said staying at O Lot, the larger safe sleeping site by Balboa Park, had left them exposed to rodents that left feces on beds, ate their food and left some people with bite marks. The document demanded the rats be quickly eliminated. “The city calls this a safe lot, but the city has created conditions for this vulnerable population that are unsafe,” Coleen Cusack, an attorney who often defends homeless people in court, said Friday at a press conference. She is running against Stephen Whitburn, a proponent of the sites, for a seat on the San Diego City Council. It only took two minutes for firefighters from Station 5 to arrive. Chief Billy Alcorn said the crews arrived to dozens gathered around the burning apartment. How to help parents and students cope with school shooting threats

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — September saw several Valley schools dealing with school shooting threats. That included campuses in Visalia, Fresno, Selma and Strathmore. And the threats of violence can be overwhelming. “The details and the nuances of these kinds of events are so potent with social media, and how news can be instantly transmitted,” Dr. Jason Christopherson said. That can trigger feelings of anxiety and stress for student and their parents. Dr. Jason Christopherson, the Clinical Director at Ascend, explains that everyone has different kinds of reactions, to help them cope with these tense situations. “When things like this happen, some children will respond with humor and jokes about it, then not realize their peers are reacting and responding to that with a lot of fear and trepidation,” Dr. Christopherson said. Parents should look out for any physical signs of stress that can appear. “If kids are expressing they’re having headaches, they’re having stomach aches, these diffused biological or physical symptoms then that might be an indication that they might be under a lot of stress or anxiety that they’re having a hard time managing,”
