The pilots were unreachable for roughly half an hour, waking to find that the plane had veered off course, the report said.  The incident occurred on a roundtrip Batik Air Indonesia flight between Halu Oleo Airport in Kendari and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on January 25. During preparation for the first leg of the flight from Jakarta to Kendari, the second-in-command pilot – a 28-year-old with roughly 1,600 hours of flying time – told the pilot in command that he did not have proper rest, according to a report by Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee. The commanding pilot, a 32-year-old with roughly 6,300 hours of flying time, allowed the secondary to rest during that leg of

Rockslide closes Pacific Coast Highway in both directions through Malibu

An overnight rockslide left a portion of Pacific Coast Highway closed in both directions through Malibu Monday morning. “I need you guys to make a U-turn and go back the other way. PCH is closed. It is not going to be open for walking or driving,” a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol unit was heard warning motorists near the slide, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Big Rock Drive. (KeyNews.TV) Caltrans used a front loader to clear the highway Monday morning but the closure remained in place as rocks continued to tumble down the hill during the early morning hours. “It absolutely is going to affect your morning commute because they are not sure how long this closure is going to last,” KTLA reporter Erin Myers said at the scene. Disneyland seeks major expansion for more immersive attractions to California park

Walking through the frosty, snow-covered hamlet of Arendelle from “Frozen,” or the bustling, critter-filled metropolis of “Zootopia” might be possible one day for visitors to Disney’s California theme parks. That’s only if Disney wins approval from local officials to expand its Anaheim resort over the next four decades. The proposed expansion wouldn’t increase Disney’s 490-acre (488-hectare) footprint in Southern California or change what the company already has permission to build. But it could help the company develop new attractions. They could place rides and entertainment options on what is currently a sprawling, 50-acre (20-hectare) parking lot — and move parking for Disneyland to a multistory structure — all while keeping within the boundaries of a resort surrounded by residential neighborhoods. Editorial: Winter permits for Mt. Baldy could save lives of hikers — and rescuers

This winter has been busy on Mt. Baldy, and not in a good way. Within the course of a couple of weeks, three well-prepared hikers and six under-prepared ones required rescue. And, terribly, a young El Monte woman died while hiking alone during a snowstorm. Winter temperatures can plunge to well below freezing on the mountain, officially named Mt. San Antonio. It’s easy to lose the trail in the snow, especially in years with heavy precipitation like this one. Others have lost their lives over the years on the narrow ridgeline of Devil’s Backbone, which is treacherous in icy conditions. Last year, actor Julian Sands, an experienced mountaineer, met his death on the mountain. He was hiking on an icy ridge when his cellphone last pinged; his remains were found five months later in a remote canyon to one side of that ridge. The 10,064-foot-tall mountain, third highest in Southern California, has been the site of more than 100 rescue expeditions since 2020, and 11 deaths. The search for Sands alone required 500 hours of search time and cost local government more than $100,000. The

‘Barbie’ ballad ‘What Was I Made For?’ makes Billie Eilish the youngest person to win 2 Oscars

LOS ANGELES — What were Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell made for? Winning awards, apparently. The sibling duo’s “Barbie” blockbuster ballad “What Was I Made For?” won the Academy Award for best original song on Sunday night. In doing so, Eilish, 22, has become the youngest person by far to have won two career Oscars. That beats a very old record set by Luise Rainer, who won her second best actress Oscar at 28 in 1938. The second youngest is now Eilish’s 26-year-old brother and co-writer Finneas. The pair won their first Oscar for “No Time to Die” in 2021. That year, they beat out some impressive names, including Beyoncé, Van Morrison, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Diane Warren. Billie Eilish and brother Finneas O’Connell discuss their nomination for their song from “Barbie” with George Pennacchio on the Oscars red carpet. Hilary Swank and Jodie Foster – a best supporting actor nominee this year – are the only others to win two before 30. “Thank you so much to the Academy. I feel like, I just didn’t think this would happen,” Eilish started her speech. “I’m so

The Associated Press said an image of Kate and her children, released by the Palace in honor of Mother’s Day in the U.K., appears to be manipulated. She now says it is poor editing, taking the blame for the mishap in a post. Several news agencies have retracted the image, pointing to what they say is an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand. There are also questions about why Kate, who always wears her iconic wedding ring famously worn first by Princess Diana, is not wearing it in the picture. 50 injured by ‘strong movement’ during ‘technical event’ on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: LATAM Airlines

SYDNEY — At least 50 people were injured Monday by what officials described as a “strong movement” on a Chilean plane traveling from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. LATAM Airlines said in a statement that there was “a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement.” It did not elaborate on what happened. Passengers were met by paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles when the flight touched down in Auckland. About 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries, with 13 taken to a hospital, an ambulance spokesperson said. One patient was believed to be in serious condition. A passenger on board the flight called Jacinto, who spoke with CNN affiliate RNZ, said there was a “mid-air drop.” “People flew through the cabin,” he said. “People got pretty injured.” Passengers said a number of people were not wearing seatbelts when flight LA800 suddenly dropped. “People were really scared as well.” Another passenger, which RNZ named as Valentina, said that the plane “just stopped,” and that “people were flying around.” “Blood was on the ceiling, people [flew] and broke the

Behind the Scenes: What you didn’t see at the 2024 Oscars

Les Snead and Sean McVay break down how Rams are approaching free agency

The Rams got a jump on the start of free agency. Now, are they ready to jump in? By re-signing offensive lineman Kevin Dotson to a multiyear deal and receiver Demarcus Robinson to a one-year contract, Rams general manager Les Snead took care of two pressing needs as the Rams prepare for a season with heightened expectations. The NFL’s negotiating period for unrestricted free agents begins Monday, and teams can sign players when the new league year begins Wednesday. The Rams have about $29 million in salary-cap space, according to Overthecap.com. That ranks 17th among NFL teams. Snead and coach Sean McVay “like to attack” and be aggressive, Snead said, but the Rams will not spend all of their capital at “Christmas” when free agency begins. “Let’s maybe save some for a birthday down the road, an anniversary down the road, a Mother’s Day down the road,” Snead said, pointing to the 2021 season when the Rams added edge rusher Von Miller and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. late in what turned out to be a Super Bowl title run. The Rams could use an edge

Plaschke: Good Lakers? Bad Lakers? It’s impossible to predict where this team is heading

The Lakers are steaming to the NBA Finals. The Lakers are spiraling to a play-in disaster. The Lakers are inspired. The Lakers are insipid. The Lakers are majestic. The Lakers are mediocre. The Lakers are…who knows what they are? With 16 games left in the regular season, they are the NBA’s most confused team, on the brink of either glory or gory, it changes every day, sometimes every hour, sometimes every minute, witness a cuckoo Sunday night that could have won an Oscar for cinematography. For three quarters at Crypto.com Arena, against a Minnesota Timberwolves team missing its two big men and four rotational players, the Lakers strikingly stunk. They were trailing by a point. They had committed 18 turnovers. They had allowed nearly 50 percent shooting. They were a dozen scoreboard minutes from one of the worst losses of the season. In less than half that time, they turned it into one of their best wins. They began the quarter on a 16-2 run. LeBron James was scoring. Anthony Davis was fighting. Everyone was passing, smartly, beautifully, the run epitomized by a three-toss sequence

What the Chargers might be planning for free agency

March 11, 2024 4 AM PT 1 Free agency in the NFL is traditionally a time to look outside the organization for help. The Chargers, though, still have some issues to resolve inside. Edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa as well as wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams all have salary-cap numbers in excess of $32 million. The team sits more than $21 million over the mandated threshold of $255.4 million, according to overthecap.com. So there are weighty decisions to be made in order for the Chargers to reach cap compliance by the 1 p.m. Wednesday deadline. Rookie general manager Joe Hortiz and new head coach Jim Harbaugh inherited plenty of work as they attempt to retool the Chargers’ roster, a makeover made more difficult by the financial constraints the two men face. Unless the Chargers drastically shed salary, Hortiz and Harbaugh figure to be bargain hunting in free agency. Here’s a position-by-position roster update as the negotiating period arrives at 9 a.m. Monday: 2 Quarterbacks Entering his fifth season, Justin Herbert has yet to win a playoff game.
