A’s starting pitcher reveals injury after loss to Seattle Mariners

SEATTLE — The Oakland A’s became one of the bigger surprises in baseball last weekend when, after six straight wins, they improved to .500 for the season and moved to within 1 1/2 games of first place in the American League West. It’s been a bit of a struggle for the A’s ever since. Sunday, they lost 8-4 to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, marking their sixth loss in the last eight games. The A’s trailed 5-0 after two innings, but a Max Schuemann error paved the way to a four-run second for the division-leading Mariners, who took two of three in the series. After losing three of four to the Texas Rangers early last week, the A’s (19-23) are now 3 1/2 games back of first place in the division going into their four-game series against the Houston Astros. The series starts Monday. A’s starting pitcher Alex Wood allowed four hits, including a two-run home run to Julio Rodríguez, in two innings before he left the game with a shoulder injury, which he said had been bothering him for a while. SF Giants lose Jung Hoo Lee, walk off Reds to win series

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants have taken blow after blow over the past week and sustained another significant one early Sunday afternoon against the Reds. But if their response to losing their dynamic center fielder offered any indication, then they don’t plan to waive the white flag anytime soon. Without Jung Hoo Lee, who crumpled onto the warning track in the top of the first inning, the Giants overcame an erratic start from Kyle Harrison and dug themselves out of an early hole to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 6-5, and clinch their second straight series win. “Look, it’s great to win a game when you have a lot of bad news during the course of it,” manager Bob Melvin said afterward. “To be able to fight back … there were just a lot of contributions in different ways today. It ended up being a good day, in terms of win-loss.” Rallying from a three-run deficit, the Giants matched the largest of their six comeback victories this season. With their third walkoff hit of the season, they improved to 1-1 in extra-inning games. Playing host to

SF Giants’ Snell masterful in rehab outing in San Jose

Left-hander Blake Snell pitched an immaculate inning on Sunday against the Stockton Ports at Excite Ballpark as part of a masterful rehab start for Single-A San Jose. Snell struck out the first three batters he faced in the first inning, Ryan Lasko, Cole Conn, and Myles Naylor, on a minimum of nine pitches. All nine of Snell’s pitches were strikes, and all three Ports hitters struck out swinging. Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner with the San Diego Padres last season, retired all 12 batters he faced on just 46 pitches, 34 of which were strikes. Snell finished with seven strikeouts and left the game after the fourth inning, with the San Jose Giants holding a 4-0 lead. Bo Davidson hit a two-run home run, and Bryce Eldridge and Cole Foster each added an RBI. Snell was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 24 with a left adductor strain, with Giants manager Bob Melvin saying then that it happened during a bullpen session. Snell went 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts for the Giants after he

Jung Hoo Lee leaves injured in 1st inning as SF Giants can’t catch a break

SAN FRANCISCO — Injuries can come in bunches, as Giants manager Bob Melvin lamented Sunday morning. But this? Not even an hour had passed since one Giants outfielder was placed on the injured list when another, Jung Hoo Lee, was forced to leave their Sunday matinee against the Reds in the top of the first inning with a significant injury to his left arm. The rookie centerfielder dislocated his left shoulder when he crashed into the wall while making a play on a fly ball, manager Bob Melvin said after Giants rebounded for a 6-5 win in extra innings. While they will know more once he undergoes an MRI, the initial prognosis was “not great,” according to Melvin. “He goes all out,” Melvin said. “When he hit the wall and he went down and didn’t get up, I didn’t have a great feeling about it.” Only making his return to the starting lineup after missing the past three games with a bruised foot, Lee leaped into the center field wall while giving chase to a fly ball from Jeimer Candelario. He missed the ball, which

Injuries begin to pile up for SF Giants as Michael Conforto lands on IL

SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Melvin sighed and shrugged his shoulders. “It’s just something you deal with,” the Giants manager said Sunday morning, addressing the latest injury to strike his group of position players. “We’re going through it right now. Sometimes it happens in bunches. Seems like that’d the case at this point.” Before their series finale against the Reds began, the Giants announced a transaction that is beginning to feel repetitive. Another member of their starting lineup was placed on the injured list with a prospect called up from Triple-A Sacramento to take his place. On Sunday, it was Michael Conforto who became the sixth San Francisco position player to hit the IL in the past eight days when an MRI revealed a strain in his right hamstring. Patrick Bailey (concussion) and Jung Hoo Lee (foot) only returned to the lineup the past two games, and the Giants are still missing Jorge Soler (shoulder), Nick Ahmed (wrist), Austin Slater (concussion) and Tom Murphy (knee). Making matters worse, Conforto was one of the few hitters producing for a lineup that has averaged 3.0 runs per game

Without lottery luck, Warriors lose first-round pick

As their odds foreshadowed, the Warriors are giving up their first-round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers. The ping pong balls didn’t bounce the Warriors’ way on Sunday during the NBA draft lottery, as their selection landed at No. 14 — where Portland will pick. The only way the Warriors could have used the pick this year is if they had jumped from 14th into the top four of the lottery, an outcome with just a 3.37% chance based on the lottery’s odds. The Warriors traded their 2024 first-round pick in 2019 to Memphis in a package that included Andre Iguodala. The pick has changed multiple hands since, from Memphis to Boston to Portland, and will now end up with the Blazers. Because of its 46-36 record, Golden State was the lottery team with the lowest odds — less than 1% — of winning the top pick. While the Warriors didn’t beat the odds, Atlanta did. The Hawks, who finished 36-46 and had a 3% chance at landing the top pick, won the lottery and will have the opportunity to select French center Alex Sarr

Chris Van Hollen of Maryland tells “Face the Nation” that the Biden administration has set a “very low bar for what’s acceptable” from Israel in a report on that country’s use of U.S. weapons in the war against Hamas, and Zahra Skaik, a 44-year-old Palestinian woman living in Gaza City, escaped the war thanks to her sons – one of whom is an infantryman in the U.S. army. Margaret Brennan sat down with Skaik recently as she described how she left Gaza with nothing but a small backpack and the same clothes she had been wearing since the war began.
