San Ramon Valley topples De La Salle to reach EBAL baseball final

No. 11 San Ramon Valley 8, No. 4 De La Salle 2 For the second year in a row, the East Bay Athletic League baseball final will not include De La Salle. Last year, Granada beat the Spartans in the semifinals. Wednesday, San Ramon Valley toppled the Concord powerhouse, prevailing on the road behind Marco Jones’ two-run homer and two hits and three RBIs from Julian Cambra . The Wolves scored two in the first, a run in the third and another in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. De La Salle responded in the fifth, scoring on an infield error, and made it 4-2 in the sixth on Sean Stafford’s RBI double. But SRV added four in the visitor’s half of the seventh – two on Jones’ home run – to advance to the championship game Friday at Granada. It’ll be a rematch of last season’s league final, which SRV won on its home field 3-2 in nine innings. Charles Reiland pitched 4 ⅔ innings on Wednesday for SRV. Owen Morgan worked the next two and Nate Simonton got the final out as

Los Gatos edges Los Altos in a walk-off to keep league title hopes alive

LOS GATOS — First place was on the line and the two pitchers faced off in a duel that won’t be soon forgotten. Los Altos held a tenuous one-run lead heading to the bottom of the seventh and came within millimeters of pulling off the win. But a throw for a game-ending and Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division-clinching double play hit the dirt and rolled away and two Los Gatos runners crossed the plate. Game over. Final score: Los Gatos 2, Los Altos 1. “A great game between the two top teams in the league,” Los Gatos coach Mike Minkel said. “Games like that, runs are hard to come by. Two horses on the mound doing what they’ve been doing all year.” Los Gatos’ Sage Romero (6) bunts the ball against Los Altos in the seventh inning at Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, Calif., on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. OAKLAND — A 43-year-old man has been charged with killing a motorist in an unprovoked shooting earlier this week near the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland, according to prosecutors. Justin Jenkins is also accused of shooting into an occupied vehicle and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Wednesday. If convicted of the charges, Jenkins faces 36 years and eight months to life in state prison. The victim — identified as 61-year-old Michael Seymour — was sitting in a minivan at 12th Street and Lake Merritt Boulevard just before noon on Sunday when he was shot, according to prosecutors and Oakland police. The shooting was unprovoked, prosecutors said, adding that Jenkins has a “long history of gun violence.” After the shooting, Seymour drove to the 1200 block of 1st Avenue, where he was involved in a collision, according to police. Officers arrived to find him suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Officers identified Jenkins as a suspect in the fatal shooting and arrested

Unidentified Chemical Sickens Students at Coachella Middle School

A chemical leak at a Coachella school Wednesday sickened more than a dozen students, who were taken to a regional trauma center for further assessment and treatment. The exposure threat was reported at 11:15 a.m. in Bobby Duke Middle School at 85358 Bagdad Ave., according to the Riverside County Fire Department. The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered 19 youths in need of medical attention due to the noxious odor. A total of 24 classrooms were impacted by the leak, which prompted an evacuation of the campus. Officials said 18 students were taken to hospitals for treatment of “minor complaints.” Personnel from the fire department’s hazardous materials unit attempted to identify the source of the trouble, but “were unable to detect any leaks,” the agency said. Technicians from Southwest Gas were summoned to investigate further. Firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 3 p.m.

SF Giants’ 8-6 win puts them on cusp of sweeping Rockies to cap road trip

A second straight victory in Colorado has the Giants on the brink of sweeping their first series of the season. Beating the woeful Rockies again Thursday would be a welcome way to end this 10-game road trip which the Giants started by anemically losing the first two of three in Boston before getting swept in a four-game visit to Philadelphia. Michael Conforto got Wednesday night’s 8-6 win started by opening the second inning with a first-pitch home run into Coors Field’s right-field seats. That ignited a six-run rally by — let’s double check — yes, an aggressive Giants squad that failed to score that many runs in any of their previous 14 games. This marked only the fourth time this season the Giants (17-21) have won back-to-back games. Thursday’s 12:10 p.m. PT start pits the Giants’ Keaton Winn (3-4, 4.41) against Cal Quantrill (1-3, 4.31). After beating the Rockies 5-0 on Monday behind Kyle Harrison’s seven shutout innings, the Giants continued to make offensive strides, and manager Bob Melvin wasn’t going to credit that to playing in a hitter-friendly, mile-high ballpark. “Our bats have been

Rangers break open Game 2 late, survive late A’s rally to get doubleheader split

OAKLAND — The Athletics awoke in the ninth inning, but a four-run rally wasn’t enough in a 12-11 loss to the Texas Rangers in a doubleheader split Wednesday at the Coliseum. The Athletics won the first game 9-4 with Shea Langeliers hitting a home run, double and single for five RBIs and starting pitcher J.P. Sears getting the win with 5 2/3 innings of work. It snapped a three-game losing streak. Langeliers also homered and drove in three runs in the second game, setting an Oakland franchise record for RBIs in a doubleheader with eight. Paid attendance over the two games was 8,230, although it appeared a few thousand fans or more didn’t stick around for the second game. Manager Mark Kotsay thought his team showed its character with the first-game result and the ninth-inning rally in the second game. “That’s the World Series champions over there, and today I think we showed up and played and gave them everything that we could give ’em,” Kotsay said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team in the second game the way they fought. There’s just

Despite scandals, Curren Price and Kevin de León regain seats on L.A. council committees

Los Angeles City Councilmembers Curren Price and Kevin de León, who have been caught up in separate scandals, were brought back onto a handful of committees by Council President Paul Krekorian in a decision announced Wednesday. Price, who represents part of South L.A., voluntarily stepped down from his committees after he was charged with embezzlement, perjury and conflict of interest in June . He has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence. De León, whose district includes part of the Eastside, appeared on a secretly recorded conversation featuring racist and sexist remarks that became public in October 2022. In the uproar that followed, he was removed from all of his committees by acting Council President Mitch O’Farrell. Now running for a second term in the Nov. 5 election, De León has apologized to his constituents for what he said and didn’t say during the conversation. Krekorian, in a letter to City Clerk Holly Wolcott, said he has placed De León on four committees — those dealing with housing and homelessness, trade and tourism, energy and the environment, and transportation. De León also retained his seat on the Board

USC president, provost censured by faculty senate over commencement cancelation

The University of Southern California’s Academic Senate, the body that represents the school’s faculty, voted to censure President Carol Folt and Provost Andrew Guzman Wednesday over what they said was the mishandling of the issues leading up to the cancellation of commencement, according to multiple reports.   The vote came after an hours-long meeting where members of the faculty criticized USC’s president and provost over the decision to pull valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s speech from the commencement ceremony, a move that was followed by the cancelation of all commencement speakers and the main graduation ceremony itself.   Members of USC’s Academic Senate, according to the Los Angeles Times, were also reportedly upset with “the posture of administrators toward” pro-Palestinian demonstrators on school grounds, some 93 of whom were arrested by LAPD.   Carol Folt, the University of Southern California’s 12th president, at a press conference held at Town and Gown at the University Park Campus in Los Angeles, on March 20, 2019.(Al Seib / Los Angeles Times) The Academic Senate’s 21-7 vote for a resolution censuring Folt and Guzman cited “widespread dissatisfaction and concern” over the way

Rep. Barbara Lee endorses Rep. Adam B. Schiff for Senate and gets some fundraising help

Former rivals are working together again. After nearly a year of running against each another in California’s Senate race, Rep. Adam Schiff appeared alongside Rep. Barbara Lee at a Washington fundraiser partially to help the Oakland congresswoman raise money for “debt retirement purposes,” according to a copy of the invite obtained by The Times. The event came the same day Lee announced her endorsement of Schiff in his head-to-head contest this November against former baseball player Steve Garvey. Lee finished in a distant fourth place in the March 5 primary. “Now more than ever, we need to elect people like Adam Schiff, who will stand up against the autocrats looking to divide this country and dismantle our democracy,” Lee said in a news release announcing the endorsement. “For decades in Congress, I’ve worked alongside Adam to deliver for Californians. I’m honored to endorse him for the United States Senate,” Lee said. Schiff and Lee have known each other nearly 30 years, serving together in the state Legislature and Congress. Along with fellow Democrat Rep. Katie Porter of Irvine, the three members of Congress vied to
