49ers’ GM talks on Davante Adams trade, Brandon Aiyuk start, Ricky Pearsall delay

SANTA CLARA – A month ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, ever-active general manager John Lynch did not shoot down the possibility of a deal for Davante Adams, the Raiders’ disgruntled wide receiver and an East Palo Alto native. Lynch, however, did not confirm a NFL Network report that the 49ers are in the mix of potential trade partners. “Shoot, we like our group,” Lynch said Friday on his weekly segment on KNBR 680-AM. “Davante is a hell of a player. One thing we’ve shown is we’re always looking, we’re never afraid to look and see what’s out there. We’re never afraid to pull the trigger. “Coming in this year, we feel our roster is in pretty good spot,” Lynch continued. “We have endured some injuries. But we will never say never, but it’s got to work for both sides. It’s got to work for us. I’m not going to comment on any specific player but we like where our roster is at.” Salary cap ramifications are likely too prohibitive for the 49ers (2-2) to try outbidding potential suitors such as the New York Jets

Taxpayers in California and 23 other states will be able to file their returns directly with the IRS in 2025

WASHINGTON  — The IRS is expanding its program that allows people to file their taxes directly with the agency for free. The federal tax collector’s Direct File program, which allows taxpayers to calculate and submit their returns to the government directly without using commercial tax preparation software, will be open to more than 30 million people in 24 states in the 2025 filing season. The program was rolled out as a pilot during the 2024 tax season in 12 states. Now IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel says the program will be permanent and the IRS will expand eligibility opportunities for taxpayers. “We’re announcing significant expansions of Direct File that will make the service available to millions more taxpayers in 2025,” Werfel said on a call Thursday with reporters. He said it is possible that additional states could still choose to join the program in 2025. RELATED: Kamala Harris says she’ll cut taxes for the middle class. Is that realistic? The pilot program in 2024 allowed people in certain states with very simple W-2s to calculate and submit their returns directly to the IRS. Those using the program

US Supreme Court will hear woman’s claim she lost out on jobs because she is straight

WASHINGTON  — The Supreme Court is taking up the case of an Ohio woman who claims she suffered sex discrimination in her employment because she is straight. The justices on Friday agreed to review an appellate ruling that upheld the dismissal of the discrimination lawsuit filed by the woman, Marlean Ames, against the Ohio Department of Youth Services. Arguments probably will take place early next year. RELATED: Bay Area schools caught in crossfire of national Title IX battle Ames, who has worked for the department for 20 years, contends she was passed over for a promotion and then demoted because she is heterosexual. Both the job she sought and the one she had held were given to LGBTQ people. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars sex discrimination in the workplace. A trial court and the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Ames. The question for the justices is that the 6th Circuit and several other appeals courts apply a higher standard when members of a majority group make discrimination claims. People alleging workplace bias have to show “background circumstances,” including

US adds a robust 254,000 jobs and unemployment dips to in sign of still-sturdy labor market

By PAUL WISEMAN | Associated Press WASHINGTON  — America’s employers added a surprisingly strong 254,000 jobs in September, easing concerns about a weakening labor market and suggesting that the pace of hiring is still solid enough to support a growing economy. Last month’s gain was far more than economists had expected, and it was up sharply from the 159,000 jobs that were added in August. And after rising for most of 2024, the unemployment rate dropped for a second straight month, from 4.2% in August to 4.1% in September, the Labor Department said Friday. RELATED: Tech companies trim Bay Area jobs as layoffs persist for woozy sector The latest figures suggest that many companies are still confident enough to fill jobs despite the continued pressure of high interest rates. In an encouraging sign, the Labor Department also revised up its estimate of job growth in July and August by a combined 72,000. Including those revisions, September’s job gain — forecasters had predicted only around 140,000 — means that job growth has averaged a solid 186,000 over the past three months. In August, the three-month average was

Donald Trump to head back to Butler — site of 1st assassination attempt — for weekend rally

Former President Donald Trump is making his return to the site of his first assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, for a rally on Saturday — a moment the campaign hopes will spur inspiration among his fervent supporters as they come together to honor the victims who died during the July shooting. “I’m going back to Butler because I feel I have an obligation to go back to Butler. We never finished what we were supposed to do,” Trump said earlier this week in an interview with NewsNation. “I said that day, when I was shot, I said, ‘We’re coming back. We’re going to come back.’ And I’m fulfilling a promise. I’m fulfilling, really, an obligation.” Donald Trump is surrounded by U.S. Secret Service agents after an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., Saturday, July 13, 2024. Israeli airstrikes rock southern suburbs of Beirut and cut off a key crossing into Syria

By BASSEM MROUE BEIRUT (AP) — Israel carried out another series of punishing airstrikes Friday, hitting suburban Beirut and cutting off the main border crossing between Lebanon and Syria for tens of thousands of people fleeing the Israeli bombardment of the Hezbollah militant group. The overnight blasts in Beirut’s southern suburbs sent huge plumes of smoke and flames into the night sky and shook buildings kilometers (miles) away in the Lebanese capital. Additional strikes sent people running for cover in streets littered with rubble in the Dahiyeh neighborhood, where at least one building was leveled and cars were burned out. The Israeli military said it targeted Hezbollah’s central intelligence headquarters around midnight. It did not say who it was aiming for or if any militants were killed in that strike, but it claimed to have killed 100 Hezbollah fighters in the last 24 hours. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported more than 10 consecutive airstrikes in the area. Some 1,400 Lebanese, including Hezbollah fighters and civilians, have been killed and some 1.2 million driven from their homes since Israel escalated its strikes in late September aiming to cripple Hezbollah

Halloween 2024: Taylor Swift-themed skeleton house pays homage to ‘scEras’ tour

‘Terror Swift: The scEras Tour’ By Kenny Lopez Friday, October 4, 2024 2:49PM Taylor Swift takes the stage this Halloween at the popular Skeleton House in New Orleans, Louisiana. NEW ORLEANS — The owner of a New Orleans mansion has been decorating for Halloween with the traditional variety of skeletons, ghosts and goblins for 20 years. But this year is a new “era.” Their bone yard is now transformed into the Taylor Swift themed, “Terror Swift: The scEras Tour.” “13 different Taylors, and a football player that you might recognize,” Louellen Berger, owner of The Skeleton House NOLA told WGNO. Berger said she puts it all together with the help of her 11 grandchildren. “We put all of our minds together and came up with all the ideas. My younger grandkids even did all the friendship bracelets, so it was a family affair,” she said. All of these skeletons are “Taylor made.” “My earlier career was in fashion, so I really like doing this. A lot of the outfits are former outfits of our children or grandchildren, and several of them are even gymnastics outfits,”

The second peak of California’s October heat wave hits this weekend, health concerns mount

49ers will be playing the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday at 1 p.m., all but ensuring that fans and players will be out in the heat of the day. Highs in Santa Clara are expected to soar into the mid to upper 90s Sunday, according to XX, National Weather Service meteorologist for the Bay Area. An analysis from SFGate found that Sunday’s game will likely be the hottest in stadium history. Fans have long had concerns about heat in the stadium, with the majority of seats positioned in the direct sun. “We’re expecting anywhere from 93 to 96 degrees on Sunday” Gass said. “it’s among the warmest” for this time of year. Earlier this week, the San José Mineta International Airport — the closest climate site to Levi’s Stadium — for the first time in recorded history hit 100 degrees three days in a row, among a slew of hot temperatures records shattered this week. Not far away in Mountain View, Stanford’s football team will kick off Saturday against Virginia Tech, where highs are expected to reach into the mid-90s. “We are most concerned with people

The Tijuana River smells so bad, the CDC is coming to investigate

San Diego County residents will have an opportunity to share their pollution concerns about the Tijuana River when officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention arrive later this month to conduct a health survey. This is the first time that a federal agency is investigating the potential harm caused by millions of gallons of raw sewage pouring through the Tijuana River that have caused beach closures of more than 1,000 days. Residents living near the river say they have been suffering unexplained illnesses, including gastrointestinal issues and chronic breathing problems, because of the stench of hydrogen sulfide. “We’re continuing to lean in and listen in on what our community residents are feeling,” said Dr. Seema Shah, the interim deputy public health officer with San Diego County. Supervisor Nora Vargas first wrote to the CDC back in May, formally asking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to look into the health complaints. This week, the county began reaching out to thousands of residents to inform them that the CDC is coming in the hope that they will be more receptive to answering

Four opponents forfeit volleyball matches to San Jose State to protest transgender player

The San Jose State women’s volleyball team picked up its fourth victory by forfeit Wednesday, three weeks before the match was scheduled to be played and one day before losing on the court for the first time this season. The reason for the unusual sequence of events is straightforward: San Jose State has a transgender athlete on its roster, and four Mountain West Conference opponents have chosen to take losses rather than take the court against the Spartans. Utah State on Wednesday joined Boise State, Southern Utah and Wyoming in canceling the matches even though the Aggies aren’t scheduled to visit San Jose State until Oct. 23. Wyoming was scheduled to play host to the Spartans on Saturday, but that match has already been called a forfeit. Colorado State played host to San Jose State on Thursday and won in straight sets, handing the Spartans their first loss of the season. Nevada has said that it will play San Jose State as scheduled Oct. 26. San Jose State has said that addressing the gender identity of its athletes would violate school policy, and the schools

Mayor selects Jim McDonnell as new LAPD chief

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass selected Jim McDonnell to serve as the city’s next police chief Friday, ending a months-long search process and ushering in a new era for one of the country’s largest police departments. In picking the longtime lawman — who helped implement a federal consent decree as an LAPD assistant chief and later was elected Los Angeles County sheriff — Bass is getting a steady hand as the massive security challenges of the World Cup and the Olympic Games loom on the horizon. However, the appointment of McDonnell, who is white, came as a surprise — and a disappointment to some — who hoped Bass would appoint the city’s first Latino or woman to serve as chief. “From the beginning, I have been clear: My top priority as Mayor is to ensure that Angelenos and our neighborhoods are safer today than yesterday,” Bass said in a statement. “Chief McDonnell is a leader, an innovator, and a change maker, and I am looking forward to working with him to grow and strengthen LAPD, deepen relationships with communities across the city, and make sure

He joined the company in December 2021 according to his LinkedIn page. The SEC filing also announced that a Delaware court ruled last month that 785,825 shares of Trump Media must be released to ARC Global Investments II, an early backer of Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC), the special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, that took TMTG public . 6 signs you need credit card debt forgiveness this October

Credit card debt forgiveness could prevent you from doing further damage to your finances. Getty Images/iStockphoto Credit card debt is a growing problem nationwide, with the total amount of credit card debt recently surpassing $1.14 trillion — a record high. This uptick is being driven by a range of factors, including lingering inflationary pressures , which have caused the cost of consumer goods like groceries and fuel to climb over the last few years. As a result, more Americans are using their credit cards to help cover their basic expenses, with the average credit cardholder now owing roughly $8,000 , and a large number of cardholders owing much more than that.  Credit card interest rates are also sitting at nearly 23% on average , the highest rate on record, which means that it’s easy for credit card debt to spiral out of control right now due to interest charges. After all, when you’re carrying a large revolving card balance, the compounding interest can easily turn

Washington Wizards’ Jared Butler overcomes his fear and learns to swim

Jared Butler takes on new sport challenge Jared Butler’s journey from basketball star to swimming student 04:17 As the NBA season approaches, players are hitting the gym to prepare. Among them is Jared Butler, a guard for the Washington Wizards.  But while Butler has been working hard on his basketball skills, he’s also been pursuing a goal off the court that might surprise some: Learning how to swim. The 24-year-old Louisiana native never learned to swim growing up. His focus was basketball, and swim lessons weren’t readily available. Butler also points out that there was a generational aspect at play. His mother never learned how to swim, and that fear trickled down to him. “Always in the back of my mind, always like the thing that I just couldn’t do,” said Butler. Overcoming challenges If a parent doesn’t know how to swim, there’s only a 19% chance that their child will learn, according to the USA Swimming Foundation. The foundation also reports that 64% of Black children and teens have little to no swimming ability, compared to 40% of White children and teens. Butler remembered

Watch live: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to name new LAPD Chief

Residents of Los Angeles will soon know their next chief of police. In a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, mayor Karen Bass is expected to name the new chief of the L.A. Police Department. The hire is thought to be one of the crucial events of Bass’ first term in office. According to the Los Angeles Times, the pick was expected to be Jim McDonnell, former Los Angeles County Sheriff and LAPD assistant chief. McDonnell was elected sheriff in 2014 before losing to Alex Villanueva in a 2018 reelection bid. McDonnell has previously served as the chief of the Long Beach Police Department. The announcement comes after a search spanning several months. The vacancy opened after Chief Michael Moore’s surprise retirement earlier this year. Moore, who served in the role from 2018 until this February, took on challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and protests stemming from the death of George Floyd. In March, Assistant Chief Dominic H. Choi was unanimously appointed by the civilian Board of Police Commissioners to serve as interim chief of the LAPD. From the beginning of his brief

New Bigfoot footage goes viral on social media

In what closely resembles a scene from a 1980s movie or a beef jerky commercial, new footage purportedly of Bigfoot has racked up millions of views on social media. The video was recorded in the Parallel Forest in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Sept. 27. “Scariest moment of my life, and I really think I caught a [expletive] Bigfoot on camera in Parallel Forest,” said Emmanuel Alfaro, who recorded the footage and posted it to TikTok. Alfaro’s video is just ten seconds long and, unlike most other purported Bigfoot footage, is relatively clear. The creature, or person in a costume, appears to sniff or munch on some leaves and then starts to look around before the video ends. “I was just doing some sightseeing and enjoying the day when I saw something in the distance. I’m still shaking as I type this,” Alfaro said. Alfaro was asked if he was involved in a stunt or if he was aware of one, and he responded, “No clue if it was a stunt; I just got the [expletive] outta there as quick as I could. I thought I was

How ‘soft’ auction added $32 million to price for Orange County icon

The auction of an iconic California office campus entered its fifth month due to an odd selling process that essentially gives participants control of the deadline. The federal government’s exit from the eye-catching Chet Holifield Federal Building – better known as the “Ziggurat” – began June 5. The initial auction deadline for the building plus 89 acres in Laguna Niguel was July 31, but it came with a big “but” in the rules. You see, this auction run by the General Services Administration has a “soft close” – if the high price is topped in a 24-hour period, the auction is extended for another 24 hours. And on July 31 – and for every business day through Thursday, Oct. 3 – that extra bidding threshold was met.  Consider the math of this curious auction technique: On July 31, the first deadline, the Ziggurat price tag was $136.8 million. The 45 added days of bidding increased that to $169.2 million as of Thursday. That’s $32.4 million-plus above July 31. And that’s $99.2 million above the original ask of $70 million for this prime Orange County land.

Lakers to Open Preseason Play at Acrisure Arena Against Minnesota

LeBron James and his son Bronny could play together as Lakers for the first time Friday evening when the team opens preseason play against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Acrisure Arena. Coach JJ Redick said Thursday the elder James and starting center Anthony Davis will play this weekend but did not specify if or how much they would play Friday or Sunday against the Phoenix Suns, also at Acrisure Arena. “We’re still talking through what minutes and rotations look like — we have a general idea of what that looks like for all of preseason, but trying to figure out what makes the most sense,” Redick said after practice at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo. “Our framework for a plan is based on real time and on how these guys feel.” Bronny James made himself eligible for the June NBA draft after averaging 4.8 points per game in his lone season at USC and was chosen by the Lakers with the 55th overall selection. He played 490 minutes over 25 games with six starts for the Trojans. The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound guard missed the first
