Beat the chill with these top radiant heaters

Which radiant heater is best? For those cold days where your home’s furnace isn’t quite keeping up with the weather, a radiant heater is a nice choice. You can use a radiant heater to create warmth in the area directly around you, rather than heating an entire room. A radiant heater is a type of space heater that doesn’t use a blower or fan to circulate the warm air it generates. This means it doesn’t cause dust to recirculate throughout the room, making it an efficient option for allergy sufferers. Our favorite radiant heater is the DeLonghi Comfort Temp Full Room Radiant Heater. What to know before you buy a radiant heater Size When selecting the best radiant heater for your needs, pay attention to the physical size of the unit, its wattage and its power source. Also take into consideration the size of the area you intend to heat. Less than 100 square feet: Use a heater with less than 1,000 watts of power for a small area. You can usually carry this size of the radiant heater from room to room easily by hand. 100 to

Sharks, AHL defenseman mutually agree to terminate contract

The San Jose Sharks on Wednesday placed defenseman Valtteri Pulli on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his NHL contract. “Valtteri requested to play in Europe and we mutually agreed to terminate his contract,” Sharks assistant general manager Joe Will said in a statement. “We want to thank Valtteri for his contributions to the organization and wish him all the best.” Pulli, 23, was signed to a two-year, two-way contract by the Sharks in May 2023 after he played three seasons with TPS Turku of the Finnish League. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Pulli never played for the Sharks, but had 10 points in 59 games for the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL last season. Pulli was healthy again this season but only dressed for two Barracuda games, both in October. He had one assist in an Oct. 19 game against the Iowa Wild. The Barracuda have several new defensemen this season, including rookies Luca Cagnoni and Jake Furlong, and veterans Jimmy Schuldt and Joey Keane. Pulli fell down the depth chart and was usually unable to crack the team’s lineup. Pulli didn’t play again

Who is Tony Buzbee, the lawyer suing Jay-Z as part of civil cases against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs?

By JUAN A. LOZANO HOUSTON (AP) — High-profile legal battles are nothing new for Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, with his latest being a lawsuit he’s filed against Jay-Z, accusing the iconic rapper as well as Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting a minor at an awards show after-party in 2000. The lawsuit against Jay-Z is part of a series of civil cases the Houston-based Buzbee has filed against Combs, who remains jailed in New York as he awaits trial on federal charges that he coerced and abused women for years. In his legal career, Buzbee has represented a variety of clients. He helped acquit Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton at his impeachment trial in the Texas Senate last year. He represented more than two dozen women who accused Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct and assault. Buzbee has also made a couple of unsuccessful runs at elected office, including a bid to be Houston’s mayor. His critics say he’s full of bluster and bombast. Jay-Z said the lawsuit against him is part of an extortion attempt. Buzbee’s law firm has said he’s worked

Ex-Alameda County DA’s phone records to be subpoenaed over allegations of political shakedown in murder case

OAKLAND — A lawyer who has accused former District Attorney Pamela Price of political extortion will likely soon have access to written communications exposing how Price handled day-to-day business as Alameda County’s top prosecutor. In a court hearing Friday, the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office revealed plans to file a subpoena for Price’s personal phone records, as it attempts to prove that Price imposed sentencing enhancements against a client whose attorney refused to work against Price’s recall. Judge Thomas Reardon indicated he would grant the subpoena and expects it be complied with by the year’s end. The controversy centers on the murder conviction of a man named Jamal Thomas, who was found guilty of fatally shooting his former neighbor following a lengthy campaign of harassment, vandalism and threats. After the conviction, Thomas’ trial lawyer filed a sworn declaration accusing Price of using her position as a political cudgel. Voters later booted Price from office in an unprecedented recall election on Nov. 5. Her last day on the job was Dec. 5. The following day, Kathleen Guneratne, an assistant public defender, aired her intention to file

Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell. It’ll be a first for him

By MICHELLE L. PRICE and COLLEEN LONG NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump used his image as a successful New York businessman to become a celebrity, a reality television star and eventually the president. Now, he finally will get to revel in one of the most visible symbols of success in the city when he rings the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. Trump is expected to be on Wall Street to mark the morning’s ceremonial start of the day’s trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans. It will be a notable moment of recognition for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who gave up living full time in his namesake Trump Tower in Manhattan and moved to Florida. The U.S. stock market soared after Trump won the 2024 election in part by seizing on Americans’ worries over the economy. The ringing of the bell is a powerful symbol of U.S. capitalism — and a good New York photo opportunity at that. Despite his decades as a New York businessman, Trump has never done it before. QRF helicopters arrived Tuesday morning, when the fire was already close to 1,200 acres. Crews were “battling pretty high winds and trying to drop anything in that type of wind can be kind of difficult,” Lane said. In those conditions, “the effectiveness kind of goes out the window.” The video above shows what QRF crews saw upon arrival:

‘You’ll be dead by the end of the day’: Duo arrested in killing of Woodland Hills doctor had troubled pasts

Two people have been arrested in the execution-style slaying of popular Woodland Hills doctor Hamid Mirshojae, who was gunned down in the parking lot of his practice as he left work this summer. Ashley Rose Sweeting, 40, and Evan Hardman, 41, were taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the killing in August, the Los Angeles Police Department said. Sweeting is from Reseda and Hardman is from Texas. Mirshojae was shot in the back of the head as he walked to his car after work on Aug. 23. The shooting occurred a few months after the doctor had been jumped by a trio of men with baseball bats, an attack that left him fearing for his life. Police did not offer any details about what exactly the two suspects are accused of doing. Nor did they shed any light on how investigators connected the pair to the killing or what their motive might have been. It was not immediately clear whether Sweeting or Hardman is accused of being the person who shot Mirshojae. The LAPD announced the arrests Tuesday, saying they had worked with the

Officials from the FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York held a news conference Wednesday to announce the charges. They said the brothers ran a sex trafficking scheme and allegedly assaulted dozens of women between 2010 and 2021, in some cases, dating back to when the men were in high school. “The defendants used their wealth and positions to create and facilitate opportunities to sexually assault women,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams announced. “In particular, Oren and Tal Alexander used their prominent positions in the real estate industry to induce women to come to events and parties. Inflation is rising again: Why you should invest in gold now

Getty Images Over the last few months, a prolonged period of cooling inflation helped to ease consumer goods price growth, reducing some of the financial pressure on Americans. However, new inflation data is sparking renewed concerns among investors and consumers alike. According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, inflation rose 2.7% on an annual basis in November, marking the second consecutive month of increases. While this figure remains significantly below  the recent peak of 9.1% recorded in June 2022, the upward trend in inflation has raised eyebrows among economic analysts and financial experts alike. After all, this reversal in the disinflation trend suggests that the battle against rising prices may not be over. As a result, it could potentially impact everything from grocery bills to investment portfolios in the months ahead, making it harder for Americans to stay afloat financially. And, it could also have an impact on investors. Periods of

Special election to be held for Southern California senatorial district in April

A special election to fill the vacancy in California’s 36th Senate District – which encompasses coastal Orange County – will be held in April, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said Wednesday.  The seat is vacant after Janet Nguyen was elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, replacing Andrew Do, who resigned from his position as 1st District Supervisor after agreeing to plead guilty to federal corruption charges in October.  Nguyen had previously served on the O.C. Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2014 and had been sworn in as the 36th District Senator in 2022.   After winning her first race 17 years ago by a mere seven votes, Nguyen became the first female supervisor to represent the 1st District, the first Asian American and Vietnamese American to serve on the board, and she is also the youngest person to be elected supervisor in county history.  Doing holiday shopping on Amazon? Driver crashes after fleeing border patrol agents in Southern California; fentanyl seized

Border Patrol agents seized nearly five pounds of fentanyl pills and arrested two suspected smugglers in eastern San Diego County last Thursday following a short pursuit along Interstate 8, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. Officers encountered the suspects around 4 p.m. as their vehicle approached the Border Patrol Immigration Checkpoint on I-8 in Pine Valley. According to CBP, agents directed the vehicle’s driver to move into secondary inspection, but he did not; instead, he sped off west on I-8. After a short pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed near the highway’s exit at East Willows Road near Alpine. What is fentanyl? Exploring the origins, impact of the drug The driver and a male passenger both sustained injuries that required treatment on-site. No other injuries were reported. As the two were receiving medical attention, CBP says Border Patrol agents discovered eight plastic-wrapped bundles inside the vehicle. The wrapping appeared to be consistent with smuggled narcotics, federal officials add. The drugs were then brought back to the checkpoint, where the packages were for further inspection. According to CBP, the pills tested positive

‘Golden Bachelor’ Gerry Turner reveals cancer led to abrupt divorce. His ex disagrees

There was more to the shocking “Golden Bachelor” divorce than met the eye. Gerry Turner, who charmed all ages as the ABC franchise’s elder star, has cancer and he says that’s what cut short his marriage to final rose recipient Theresa Nist. The 72-year-old revealed to People on Tuesday that early in their marriage he was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow cancer, which influenced their decision to split. Nist, in a separate interview with the magazine, appeared to disagree. (More on that later.) Upon announcing their divorce in April, Turner and Nist said that distance was mainly the culprit. The two couldn’t decide whether they should live in Turner’s Indiana or Nist’s New Jersey — because they didn’t want to be separated from their respective families. The reality star said the cancer revelation “probably will clear up a lot of mystery” around what happened at the beginning of the year. “As Theresa and I were trying very hard to find our lifestyle and where we were going to live and how we were going to make our life work, I was unfortunately diagnosed with

Three Animation Guild negotiating committee members oppose studio deal over AI

As Hollywood grapples with worries about the threat of artificial intelligence, the union that represents animators is facing dissent over its latest deal with major studios. Three Animation Guild negotiations committee members said they will vote “no” on a tentative contract the guild reached with their employers, saying the AI protections they wrangled don’t go far enough. “I believe the A.I. and outsourcing protections in this contract are not strong enough — and in my opinion — could lead to the loss of a lot of jobs,” wrote negotiations committee member Michael Rianda, who directed the animated film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” on Instagram. “Real members lives could be hurt by not having these protections.” The Animation Guild’s executive board disputed any notion that the deal lacks support, saying in a statement that more than 90% of the negotiations committee table team backed the tentative agreement and recommend ratification. “Generative AI is a complex and deeply concerning issue for our industry, and we recognize the passion and apprehension it has sparked among our members,” the executive board said. “It’s also important to understand that

Michael Bublé’s pick Sofronio Vasquez wins Season 26 of ‘The Voice’

“The Voice” has its Season 26 winner. Dubbed the Filipino Phenom online, the Utica, N.Y., resident topped his fellow Team Bublé finalist Shye on Tuesday night. He also outperformed contestants chosen by the competition series’ other coaches, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani, who had Danny Joseph, Jeremy Beloate and Sydney Sterlace in the running, respectively. On Monday night, Sofronio sang an upbeat version of “Unstoppable” by Sia and a down-tempo version of “A Million Dreams” from the 2017 musical “The Greatest Showman.” He also sang a soulful rendition of the Miracles’ “Who’s Lovin’ You” with Bublé during the finale. The top eight finalists opened the show singing “Defying Gravity” from Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film “Wicked.” “dreams really do come true,” Vasquez wrote Tuesday on Instagram, sharing a photo of himself holding his trophy and embracing his coach. FBI Director Wray says he intends to resign at end of Biden’s term in January

By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray told the bureau workforce Wednesday that he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January, an announcement that came a week and a half after President-elect Donald Trump said he would nominate loyalist Kash Patel for the job. Wray said at a town hall meeting that he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought,” three years short of the completion of a 10-year term marked by high-profile and politically charged investigations, including that led to two separate indictments of Trump last year. Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Trump had settled on Patel to be director and had repeatedly aired his ire at Wray, including in a television interview broadcast Sunday. By stepping down rather than waiting to be fired, Wray is trying to avert a collision with the new Trump administration that he said would have further entangled the FBI “deeper into the fray.” “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people

Anthony Weiner, ex-congressman jailed in sexting scandal, files to run for NYC City Council seat

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner appears to be trying to mount a political comeback and has officially registered to run for an East Village City Council seat. The once-promising politician, now infamous after being brought down by two very public sexting scandals and serving time in prison for sexting a minor, filed the paperwork formalizing his status as a candidate last week after publicly toying with the idea of running for the Council seat. Weiner said Tuesday his account with the city’s campaign finance board should be considered “exploratory” and that he hasn’t yet decided on whether to actually run. Weiner said he filed the paperwork because a local Democratic club required it to be considered at a candidates forum Thursday. “So here I am,” he said. “I’m doing this one step at a time,” Weiner said in a phone interview that was interrupted multiple times as he tried to usher his dog, a pit terrier lab mix named Billy, into his apartment after returning from a walk. The race to replace Council Member Carlina Rivera, who cannot run in 2025 due to term limits, is
