Woman berates family with racist comments on LAX bus

Pervez Taufiq and his young family had just landed at LAX and were almost at the end of a long travel week when a fellow passenger began berating them with racist comments. Taufiq, a well-known photographer, recorded the encounter as it took place on their United Airlines shuttle bus. “Your family is from India,” the woman says to him. “You have no respect. You have no rules. Do you think you can push everyone, push push. That’s what you think you are.” In an interview with KTLA’s John Fenoglio, Taufiq says the woman in the video was on their flight and at one point had started asking their 11-year-old son whether he was from India. “She looked at our sons – that’s two younger ones which are four and eight – and basically started saying shut up to them, just shut up, and so, to say that really made me snap and I said you can’t talk to my sons that way,” explains Taufiq. Later on, on the bus, Taufiq says the situation escalated. “You guys are f***ing crazy,” the woman says to Taufiq while

Search underway for missing passenger days after cliffside crash in Ventura County

A bizarre search and rescue operation unfolded Monday for an occupant of an SUV that reportedly plunged 1,000 feet down a hillside Saturday night in Ventura County.  Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the crash in the area of Deer Creek Road, about two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway occurred, but early reports suggest a rear passenger, who suffered serious injuries, was able to self-extricate from the white Cadillac SUV, according to photojournalists with OnScene.TV, a video news service.   The man was reportedly able to hike his way back up to the road where he was picked up by his brother and rushed to a local hospital, the news service reported.  Authorities were apparently unaware of the crash until noon on Monday when it was reported by the man who was able to hike back to the road that there were two other occupants in the vehicle.   Search and rescue crews on the scene of a cliffside crash on Dec. 2, 2024. Police say a Hawaii woman who disappeared went to Mexico and is not considered missing

By HALLIE GOLDEN and JAIMIE DING LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Hawaii woman who disappeared after landing in Los Angeles three weeks ago was seen crossing into Mexico alone with her luggage and no longer is considered missing, police said Monday. Hannah Kobayashi, 30, wanted to go off the grid and walked into the tunnel that leads to Mexico at about noon on Nov. 12, the day after her family reported her missing, according to police. There is no evidence she’s being trafficked or a victim of foul play, officials said, citing surveillance video from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection that they reviewed late Sunday. Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Police Jim McDonnell said Kobayashi appeared unharmed and that the case is now classified as a “voluntary missing person.” “We’ve basically done everything we can do at this point. She’s left the country and in another nation now,” he said, adding that if she returns to the U.S., law enforcement will be notified. McDonnell said she has a right to her privacy, but urged her to reach out to her family or law

LA Animal Services General Manger Resigns Amid Challenges

Staycee Dains has resigned as general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services after being on paid leave since August, Mayor Karen Bass’ office confirmed Monday. A spokesperson for Bass told City News Service Dains resigned effective Saturday. City officials had not explained the reason for her absence. Annette Ramirez, who led Los Angeles Animal Services on an interim basis for a year and half prior to Dains’ appointment in 2023, again began leading the department in September. Dains, who formerly led Long Beach’s animal services department, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Dains addressed issues related to volunteers during her tenure but still faced overcrowding and other challenges at the department’s six shelters, some have plagued the department long before her arrival. A recent Los Angeles Times analysis found about 1,224 dogs were euthanized, an increase of 72%, from January to September compared to the same period last year. Some 1,517 cats were euthanized, also a 17% increase from 2023. The mayor’s office noted that about 25,000 animals were adopted or rescued from the city’s six animal shelters, representing a 17% increase

Dodgers to Introduce Blake Snell After Signing $182 Million Contract

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell will be introduced by the Dodgers Tuesday at Dodger Stadium three days after agreeing to terms on a five-year, $182 million contract. ESPN had reported Tuesday that Snell and the Dodgers had agreed on a contract, pending a physical, which includes opt-outs, some deferred money and a $52 million signing bonus. Snell, who will turn 32 on Wednesday, on Tuesday posted a photoshopped picture on his Instagram account of himself wearing a Dodger uniform with his familiar No. 7 with the caption reading “LA” with an eyeballs emoji. The contract is the third largest for a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history based on total value, behind only David Price’s $217 million deal with the Boston Red Sox in 2015 and Clayton Kershaw’s $215 million contract with the Dodgers in 2014, according to ESPN. Snell won the National League Cy Young Award in 2023 when he was 14-9 with a league-best 2.23 ERA while pitching for the San Diego Padres. Snell was a free agent following the season, with the Dodgers seeking to sign him late in

Tijuana once again sets up additional checkpoint at border crossing

Mexican authorities have resurrected additional security checkpoints for U.S.-bound drivers approaching the San Ysidro Port of Entry in Tijuana during the busy holiday travel season — a move that has many border commuters worried about increased traffic headaches. The new inspection point, set up on Thanksgiving Day in the SENTRI lanes, is part of a pilot program by Tijuana officials meant to add an extra layer of security and deter unauthorized travelers before drivers reach the international boundary line. At the boundary line is where U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents then, as they have for some years now, ask drivers to show their documents before they approach the official inspection booth. The hope — as was the first time around — is that CBP will decide that the Mexican inspections are robust enough to replace CBP’s first line of officers. Those U.S. officers could then be deployed to additional inspection booths at the port of entry, therefore reducing wait times. Staffing issues have long prevented all inspection lanes from being staffed at the port of entry. Tijuana’s secretary of economic development, Pedro Montejo Peterson, said

Lakers lose to Minnesota in lowest-scoring game of the LeBron era in L.A.

MINNEAPOLIS —  LeBron James shrugged. He rolled his eyes. He complained to the refs. He hung his head. There was no discretion Monday in Minnesota — everything you needed to know about the Lakers and their leading scorer was on display in big, bold letters. “It’s everything,” James said. “It’s the rhythm. I just feel off rhythm these last three, four games.” Playing on the second night of back-to-back games, James looked as uncomfortable as ever in a Lakers uniform as he and his team failed over and over at the game’s simplest task — putting the ball in the basket. Minnesota beat the Lakers 109-80 on Monday, their fifth loss in their last seven games. James has now gone four straight games without a made three-pointer, and the Lakers’ offense has failed to score 110 points or more in five of its last six games. The 80 points is the Lakers’ worst offensive game in James’ time with the team and the worst for the organization since Jan. 22, 2017. Anthony Davis called the game “disgusting.” For James, it’s been a miserable stretch of offensive

Spartans falter in section final, lose 48-21

Coming into Saturday night’s Northen Section Division II  championship game, Red Bluff coach Jacob Daricek knew that his team had to slow down the Pleasant Valley Vikings’ running game, or it might be a long evening. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Viking’s running game dominated the game from the start in a 48-21 loss in its first section football final appearance in 25 years. “It’s a good football team. They’re really good, ” he said. “They’re strong and aggressive and they got after us pretty good.” From the outset, the Vikings attacked the Spartans on the ground, scoring the first touchdown on Lucas Benson’s 4-yard run with 9:47 left in the first quarter. After the Spartans went three and out on their opening drive, Brock Coleman scored on a 3-yard TD run to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter. When the Spartans couldn’t respond on their second drive of the night, the Vikings got the ball back, and it looked like Pleasant Valley might score a third touchdown without the Spartans responding. But a poor punt, by the

Since then she said the desolate building sat vacant, but was still filled with memories. “It’s one of the oldest buildings in the city of Merced, and its listed in the national registry of historic places,” added Lim.
