MARGARET BRENNAN: We’re joined now by the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Ohio, Congressman Mike Turner. Just a stunning turn of events within such a short period of time. The US doesn’t have a diplomatic presence inside of Syria. Our visibility is a little limited here. What is it that you think Americans need to know about this turn of events? REP. MIKE TURNER: Margaret, that was an excellent report, because you certainly laid the groundwork of this has been an incredibly brutal civil war with hundreds of thousands of people dying, including the use of chemical weapons. And of course, reminding people that the Obama administration had said this would be a red line

Los Angeles County Fire Department captain dies in ‘active duty’ incident, officials say

A captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department passed away in what authorities are calling an “active duty death.”  According to fire officials, Captain Michael H. Mercado died on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding his passing – including the exact cause and time of death as well as the location where he died – were not released.  Capt. Mercado faithfully served with the L.A. County Fire Department for over 25 years, officials said. He was last assigned to Fire Station 90 in South El Monte. “It is with a heavy [heart] the fire department shares the active duty death of Fire Captain Michael H. Live 49ers updates: Short-handed Niners take on Bears

The 49ers are clinging to their playoff hopes as they return Sunday to Levi’s Stadium to play their first home game in three weeks. The Niners face first overall draft pick Caleb Williams and the Bears, who fired coach Matt Eberflus last week after a Thanksgiving loss to the Lions, Chicago’s sixth consecutive defeat. San Francisco won’t have Christian McCaffrey, who injured his knee last week and is out for the season. Jordan Mason, McCaffrey’s backup, is out too with a sprained ankle, so it’ll be up to rookie Isaac Guerendo to run the ball for the 49ers. Other stars will also be missing: Nick Bosa was ruled out Saturday with an oblique injury that has lingered for weeks and Trent Williams’ ankle injury will also keep him off the field. The Bears, meanwhile, will be led by interim coach Thomas Brown, the offensive coordinator who took over when Eberflus was shown the door. The 49ers enter Sunday with a 7 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to the NFL’s playoff odds calculator, but they are only two games back of Seattle (7-5) for

49ers-Bears pregame: Hufanga, Ward, Lenoir bolster secondary

SANTA CLARA — Safety Talanoa Hufanga indeed will suit up today for only the third time this season, bolstering a full-staff secondary against Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams. It’s yet to be determined whether Hufanga will reclaim a starting spot in place of either Ji’Ayir Brown or rookie Malik Mustapha ahead of the 1:25 p.m. kickoff. Hufanga was on the field two hours before kickoff, resuming his usual pregame routine and doing so without a cast protecting his wrist. Deommodore Lenoir returns from a one-game hiatus (knee), and fellow cornerback Charvarius Ward will play in his second straight game after a four-game break. Saturday’s flurry of transactions saw the 49ers activate Hufanga from injured reserve after a right-wrist injury shelved him since the Week 5 loss at Arizona; he missed the first two games this season still recovering from last season’s right-knee injury. The 49ers (5-7) will look to snap a three-game losing streak while missing defensive end Nick Bosa (oblique), right tackle Trent Williams (ankle), and, left guard Aaron Banks (concussion). Ward did not practice Friday, being excused for a personal matter while grieving the

College Football Playoff field set: SMU’s in, Alabama’s out and there could be consequences

Thankfully, the field for the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff was set Sunday morning. Had the process lasted another week, it might have ripped the sport apart and pitted conference commissioners against each other in steel-cage matches. Not everything sparked outrage when the CFP selection committee revealed the pairings. Oregon and Georgia were the top-two seeds, as expected. Boise State, champion of the Mountain West, and Arizona State, which won the Big 12, received the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively, and will have opening-round byes. Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame and Ohio State will play home games in the opening round. But that’s where the relative peace and tranquility ended. The committee granted the final at-large berth to SMU, not Alabama, and you could instantly imagine smoke billowing from the nostrils of SEC commissioner Greg Sankey. Alabama (9-3) had more quality wins and played a vastly tougher schedule than the Mustangs (11-2) but also had uglier losses than the ACC runner-up. That wasn’t the only flashpoint. Boise State was seeded higher than Arizona State despite a weaker schedule — an outcome that sends the

Spare the Air alert in effect through Sunday

A Spare the Air alert is in effect through Sunday, amid moderate to unhealthy air quality across the Bay Area. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued the alert Sunday morning, making it illegal for residents or businesses to burn wood or manufactured logs indoors and outside. Air quality index forecasts show conditions are unhealthy for sensitive groups on the Peninsula, Santa Clara Valley, northern Alameda County, West Contra Costa County and parts of the North Bay. Much of the rest of the Bay Area is experiencing moderate conditions. “Regional wood burning and easterly winds transporting air pollution into the Bay Area from the Central Valley have contributed to high overnight concentrations of fine particle pollution and unhealthy air quality,” the agency said in a press release Sunday. Cool temperatures and light winds preventing the mixing of what National Weather Service Meteorologist Karleisa Rogacheski described as a “pool of cooler air” below a layer of warmer air. Those weather conditions also help trap smoke from wood burning closer to homes and increases pollution buildup, BAAQMD said. Conditions are expected to improve slightly as northernly

Jubilation and gunfire as Syrians celebrate the end of the Assad family’s half-century rule

By Abdulrahman Shaheen and Abby Sewell | Associated Press DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule but raising questions about the future of the country and the wider region. Joyful crowds gathered in squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country’s future. Mr. Biden pledged to work alongside partners and stakeholders in Syria to “help them seize an opportunity to manage the risk.” The president also said he’ll send senior officials to the region, help to ensure stability and protect U.S. personnel and will engage with Syrian groups to “establish a transition away from the Assad regime” and toward an independent and sovereign Syria.  Mr. Biden says the administration is “clear eyed” about the possibility that ISIS may try to gain control amid a power vacuum, but he said that “we will not let that

Syria latest: Syrians celebrate in the streets as Russian media says Assad has arrived in Moscow

Syrians poured into streets in celebration on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. Russian state news agencies were reporting that President Bashar Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were given asylum. Russia said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and that he had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Joyful crowds gathered in central squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag. Others ransacked the presidential palace and residence. Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago leads the biggest rebel faction in Syria and is poised to chart the country’s future. He made his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, at the capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque, and called himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa. He said Assad’s fall was “a victory to the Islamic nation.” The rapidly developing events have shaken the region. Lebanon said it was closing all its land border crossings with Syria except for one that links Beirut with Damascus. Jordan

We only know 1 of the teams in the upcoming Rose Bowl game so far. Here’s why

We now know the matchup of college football’s most prestigious event, the Rose Bowl Game, “The Granddaddy of Them All,” that will take place on Jan. 1. Well … at least we know half of it. The team that has become a mainstay for the game over the last decade-and-a-half will once again represent in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. The Oregon Ducks, the lone undefeated team in the FBS and No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, will take the stage in the Rose Bowl Game to kick off 2025. That’s because this college football season is the first year of the all new CFP 12-team format, which gives byes into the playoffs’ quarterfinals for four deserving teams. 49ers’ Brock Purdy, Chicago’s Caleb Williams take divergent routes as franchise quarterbacks

SANTA CLARA — It’s a whole new ballgame for Brock Purdy, who through good fortune and the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft stepped into a near-perfect situation with the 49ers and surpassed all expectations. About the same time Purdy was coming out of nowhere as a rookie, Caleb Williams was winning the Heisman Trophy at USC and a year away from being the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft by the Chicago Bears. All Purdy did was take his the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Games, tearing a ligament in his elbow as a rookie and winning two come-from-behind playoff games before acquitting himself well in Super Bowl LVIII only to fall victim to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The only step remaining was going back to the Super Bowl and winning it, a goal for which the 49ers are near-impossible longshots with a 5-7 record in a season gone horribly wrong. Williams, meanwhile, as the consensus top draft pick, was so enticing the Bears traded their previous quarterback of the future in Justin Fields. The same Fields the 49ers
