Police are asking for witnesses to help with an investigation after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver in Los Angeles County on Sunday afternoon. According to the La Verne Police Department, dispatch received calls of an injury traffic collision around 4:55 p.m. on Dec. 8. Officers responded to the intersection of Bonita Avenue and Damien Avenue and found an adult male pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.  La Verne Fire personnel soon responded to provide medical attention and transport the man, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the local hospital. The department issued a release on Sunday evening saying the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. According to police, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Details are limited, police did not immediately reveal whether the driver was distracted or if the pedestrian was unaware of the moving vehicle. However, police did say that drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor at this time. Officials say

Police are asking for the community’s help searching for an at-risk 55-year-old who went missing on Sunday afternoon in Long Beach. According to the Long Beach Police Department, Pedro Renteria Jr. was last seen in the 3300 block of Magnolia Avenue around 11:45 a.m. on Dec. 8 and has not been heard from since. The department describes Renteria as a Hispanic male who stands 5 feet and 3 inches tall, weighs about 185 pounds, and has gray hair and hazel eyes. Rap superstar Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, released a scathing statement targeting a Texas-based attorney accusing him of raping a 13-year-old girl with disgraced rapper, music producer and entrepreneur Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.   The civil lawsuit, first reported by NBC News, was originally filed in October in the Southern District of New York against Combs but was re-filed Sunday to include Carter as a defendant.   The outlet reported that the accuser’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, first sent a letter to Carter about the alleged rape at an MTV Music Awards after party in 2000 and requested mediation to “resolve this matter.”   In response, the rapper and entrepreneur filed his own lawsuit against the attorney, NBC News reported.   Less than hour after news of the lurid and disturbing allegations broke on Sunday, Carter put out a statement on Instagram, under his label’s – Roc Nation – account calling the accusations “blackmail.”   “My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a ‘lawyer’ named Tony Buzbee. Deputies arrested a man on Sunday after he walked into a movie theater with an airsoft rifle and tactical vest, prompting evacuations, according to the Apple Valley Police Department. According to the department’s report, deputies responded to the Cinemark, located at 18935 Bear Valley Road, around 4:19 p.m. for calls regarding a person entering the cinema wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a firearm. Deputies arrived and evacuated the theater, soon finding the suspect with the airsoft rifle and vest. Police identified the suspect as 35-year-old Byron DeShawn Murphy of Victorville, and found that he also had misdemeanor warrants.  Murphy was booked into the High Desert Detention Center, and police did not immediately say whether he had a bail posted. “The Apple Valley Police Department would like to thank the public’s cooperation and assistance with the calm evacuation of the theater,” stated the department’s release. Details are limited, it was not revealed in preliminary reports how long the evacuation lasted or if Murphy made any advances once he entered the theater. Something of a reverse pursuit unfolded this weekend on the 210 Freeway in San Bernardino County after authorities broke up a fight.   Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the events transpired, but authorities with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told KTLA that deputies responded to reports of a fight on Main Street in Rancho Cucamonga.   Several people were arrested after deputies arrived, though one person remained at large.   That suspect, behind the wheel of a white-colored four door sedan, was later spotted, but when deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver failed to yield and fled westbound on the 210 Freeway.   Suspect seen in footage traveling in reverse on the 210 Freeway in La Verne with deputies in pursuit on Dec. 8, 2024. Prosecutors are asking that convicted former legal titan Tom Girardi be sentenced to 14 years behind bars for ripping off his injured clients, while defense attorneys argue that the disbarred lawyer is a “broke, half-blind, incontinent, 85-year-old man with dementia” who should be placed in a medical facility for the rest of his life, according to court papers obtained Sunday. Girardi, once ranked among the most successful and prominent lawyers in the country, is scheduled to be sentenced in downtown Los Angeles on Friday following convictions on four counts of wire fraud for stealing millions of dollars from clients and spending the money on private jets, golf club memberships, jewelry and the career of his now-estranged wife, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Erika Jayne. An Endangered Missing Advisory was issued Sunday after a 55-year-old man was reported missing in Long Beach. Pedro Renteria Jr. was last seen Sunday near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and West Wardlow Road around 11:45 a.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. Renteria was described as a 5-feet-3-inch, 185 pound man with gray hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray sweater, black pants, black shoes and a white bracelet on his right wrist. CHP officials said Renteria is presumed to be on foot. Anyone with information about his whereabouts was urged to call 911. The Endangered Missing Advisory is an alert designated for the suspicious disappearance of at-risk missing children or other endangered individuals.

Not every epic hero has to travel from Troy to Ithaca, across Middle-earth or Westeros, or along the Yellow Brick Road to battle monsters, forge unlikely friendships, discover hidden powers and vanquish the shadow that threatens to engulf their world. Sometimes, as Dorothy Gale discovered all those years ago, a hero can do all that without ever leaving Kansas. In “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller — another woman who understands the importance of a really big song — does it without even getting a hallucination-inducing knock on the head. For Emmy purposes, the HBO series, which ended Sunday after three seasons, is considered a comedy. And certainly the half-hour show, created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring the bawdy comedian/cabaret star Bridget Everett as Sam, can be funny as hell. But like many modern comedies, most recently and famously “The Bear,” “Somebody Somewhere” is equally driven by pathos. Indeed, the series shares certain themes with “The Bear”: the devastation of parental alcoholism, the twisted relationship between talent and self-doubt.
