California ranks No. 9 for economic ‘balance’

Which state economies are best at juggling the needs of bosses and workers alike? In recent months, my trusty spreadsheet produced a pair of state economic rankings. One took the view from the employer’s perspective. The other saw economics through the employee’s eye. Let’s politely say there were passionate responses to both scorecards, with California getting poor marks for business friendliness but high grades for worker benefits. As an attempt to settle numerous debates, those rankings were combined to create a scorecard measuring what I’ll call the most “balanced” state economies. This math shows California ranking No. 9 for reasonable management of the battle between boss and employee. The best spot for this yardstick of economic symmetry was Virginia, followed by Washington state, Colorado, Florida, and Massachusetts, New Hampshire. Texas was No. 10. Worst states? Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, Kentucky and Arkansas. How did we get here? Let’s refresh our memories of those previous grades. When it comes to business-leaning scores – compiled with stats tracking everything from taxes to regulation to growth – California ranked No. 30 Tops were North Carolina, Utah, Texas, Tennessee and

Landmark 50-year-old harbor restaurant to close in Orange County

Harpoon Henry’s, a beloved fixture of Dana Point Harbor since 1975, will close its doors at the end of January 2025, harbor management announced on Tuesday. Robert Mardian, Jr., owner and founder of the upscale seafood restaurant and events venue, informed employees of the decision on November 29. The closure comes as Dana Point Harbor prepares for Phase 3 of a massive redevelopment project, which is set to begin mid-summer 2025 and is projected to be completed by fall 2026.  “We know how much this establishment means to the community, and we encourage everyone to come celebrate the final season with the Harpoon Henry’s team,” said Bryon Ward of Dana Point Harbor Partners in a news release. Managers said the redevelopment will feature seven “architecturally distinctive” buildings totaling nearly 100,000 square feet, 50 new shops and restaurants, outdoor seating and space for pop-up vendors. “It is bittersweet to see a fan favorite choose to close early as we prepare for an improved harbor experience, but we understand balancing current and future business needs and respect each owner’s decision on when its best to wind operations

British rock band robbed at gunpoint in California, group says

A British indie rock band that had just embarked on a U.S. tour said they were robbed at gunpoint outside a Starbucks in California on Tuesday. Sports Team, a six-piece London-based alternative rock band, had stopped for coffee when someone alerted them that their van was being ransacked by robbers, according to their latest Instagram post. One of the band members said they went outside to confront the robbers, only for them to “pull out a gun.” “Just been robbed at gun point 10 minutes into the US tour,” the band wrote. (Sports Team had embarked on the U.S. leg of their current tour on Dec. 2, with a show in San Francisco.) Video posted by the band from inside the Starbucks shows what appears to be the thief waving a gun at members of the tour before two people retreat back inside. Dead & Company announce new Sphere residency in Las Vegas

Dead & Company are headed back to Sphere. The jam band pairing surviving members of the Grateful Dead with singer-songwriter John Mayer said Wednesday that it will play an 18-show residency at the state-of-the-art dome-shaped venue in Las Vegas next spring, less than a year after the group completed an acclaimed 30-show run there. Scheduled to mark the 10th anniversary of Dead & Company’s formation in 2015, the new Sphere gigs are set to begin March 20 and run through May 17. In addition to Mayer, the group includes Dead veterans Bob Weir on guitar and Mickey Hart on percussion along with bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane. Dead & Company said in a statement that next year’s shows would feature “updated visuals” on Sphere’s 160,000-square-foot high-resolution video screen. In an interview this past summer with The Times, Weir described the band’s first residency (which concluded in August) as “a work in progress” and said he envisioned more interactivity between the musicians and the crew controlling Sphere’s visual content. “At some point, the tech will evolve to the point where those

ESPN on Disney+ launches Wednesday, as Disney looks to increase streaming subscribers

Disney+ subscribers will now see an ESPN tile on the streaming service’s homepage, part of Walt Disney Co.’s continued efforts to increase subscribers and reduce churn. Starting Wednesday, bundle subscribers to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will be able to access ESPN content from the Disney+ app. Those who subscribe only to Disney+ will also be able to watch some Hulu and ESPN+ content through the app, including certain live NBA games, the first day of the Australian Open and some “30 for 30” sports documentaries, as well as series and movies such as FX’s Emmy-winning “Shogun,” crime procedural “Will Trent” and the film “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” The idea, Disney officials said, is to whet people’s appetites and encourage upgrades to the full bundle. “There are opportunities to use the sampling experiences [as] lead-in to a more fulsome experience,” said Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+. The addition of ESPN content to Disney+ is similar to the roll-out of the Hulu tile earlier this year. By integrating all three of its streaming services into one platform, Disney is betting that a more seamless

Lessons learned while writing the biography of actress and activist Frances E. Williams

By Anna Christian | Contributing Columnist Several years ago, I joined a writing group at the home of a woman who I knew little about. My friend who had known her and had worked with her on several projects introduced us. We met weekly at her house in South Central L.A. It was a small group, about 10 writers of various experiences. The years I was with the group were the most fruitful in my writing life. Anna Christian is a writer and educator whose most recent novel is “Then Sings My Soul.” She facilitates a creative writing class at the Moreno Valley Senior Center. (Courtesy of Anna Christian) Each week I learned more about this fascinating woman who hosted, organized the group, and shared bits and pieces of her life with us. I felt as if I had stepped into a history book. Her circle of friends included Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Maya Angelou to name a few. She told us anecdotes about their relationships and about her career in Hollywood, and on the world stage. One day, I asked

Kurtenbach: The Warriors didn’t solve their biggest problem and it’s too obvious to ignore any longer

The Warriors’ “strength in numbers” motto was all well and good in October and early November. Then the numbers started whittling down, the league wised up, and the problem the Warriors never solved began rearing its ugly head once again. After a red-hot start to the season, the Dubs have lost five straight games. That No. 1 seed in the Western Conference this team held 10 days ago? That’s gone. In fact, the Warriors now are a play-in tournament team in the standings. Tuesday’s loss to the Nuggets was the perfect encapsulation of the slide. Down Draymond Green (calf injury) the Warriors played hard and were beating Denver by 11 with a little over six minutes to play. When Jonathan Kuminga dunked in transition on a beautiful feed from Curry to put the Warriors up 111-103 with 4:32 to play, the Warriors had to feel good about seeing the contest through. That was the last basket scored by someone who is not Curry. And Curry only scored four points — making only 2 of 10 shots and missing all five 3-pointers down the stretch —

Brandin Podziemski takes ownership for mistakes in loss to Nuggets

DENVER — As irate Steve Kerr was that the three officials missed Christian Braun’s attempt to call a timeout that the Nuggets didn’t have in the waning seconds of Tuesday night’s loss, he reserved his table-pounding for calling out Brandin Podziemski. “Podz is a hell of a player, but he needs to — I told him this — he needs to be a smart player,” Kerr said before repeatedly tapping his left hand on the postgame podium. Podziemski only committed two turnovers against Denver, but they were costly. One was a pass airmailed into the first row with 5:44 left and another was an ill-advised lob on a fast break. He also fouled Michael Porter Jr. on two separate 3-point shots, bailing the Nuggets out and contributing to the 35 foul shots they took. His mistakes were emblematic of common Warriors lapses this season: mental mistakes and careless miscues. “He’s one of our guys who’s capable of making really great decisions,” Kerr said. “The lob when we’re up 12 in the late second quarter — that was frankly insane. Five-on-four. Keep hitting singles, throw the
