Trucks are rolling across a new US pier into Gaza. But challenges remain to getting enough aid in

By LOLITA C. BALDOR and JON GAMBRELL (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Trucks carrying badly needed aid for the Gaza Strip rolled across a newly built U.S. pier and into the besieged enclave for the first time Friday as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting hindered the delivery of food and other supplies. The shipment is the first in an operation that American military officials anticipate could scale up to 150 truckloads a day, all while Israel presses in on the southern city of Rafah in its 7-month offensive against Hamas, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada and the European Union. But the U.S. and aid groups warn that the floating pier project is not a substitute for land deliveries that could bring in all the food, water and fuel needed in Gaza. Before the war, more than 500 truckloads entered the territory on an average day. The operation’s success also remains tenuous because of the risk of attack, logistical hurdles and a growing shortage of fuel for the trucks to run due to the Israeli

As injuries pile up, Matos, Ramos to get extended look for SF Giants

On Tuesday, Luis Matos missed a play that almost every outfielder should make, dropping a catchable fly ball and turning an out into three bases. Roughly 24 hours later, Matos made a play that just about no one would make, tracking Teoscar Hernández’s deep drive to center field and robbing a home run. That’s duality. Over in left field, Heliot Ramos had a field-level view of Matos’ lowlight and highlight. Ramos will have plenty of opportunities to graze that patch of outfield grass himself. With Jung Hoo Lee potentially out for months and Michael Conforto dealing with his own ailment, Matos, 22, and Ramos, 24, will be the team’s starting center and left fielders, respectively. The kids will get their shot. “He’s a showman,” said Logan Webb of Matos after throwing six shutout innings on Wednesday, thanks partly to Matos’ catch. “That’s what excites people and excites us.” Luis Matos makes an INCREDIBLE catch at the wall. pic.twitter.com/ksJls1lIlF — MLB (@MLB) May 16, 2024 The Giants have desperately needed that type of excitement, given the number of injured position players. John Oates opens up about legal battle with Daryl Hall over joint business

The legendary rock duo, known as Daryl Hall & John Oates, have been business partners for over 50 years and are famous for their huge hits like “Rich Girl” and “You Make My Dreams.” Last year, Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates alleging that Oates attempted to sell his share of their jointly owned company, “Whole Oats Enterprises” without Hall’s permission. House committee meeting devolves into chaos as Greene and Ocasio-Cortez trade barbs

WASHINGTON — Proceedings quickly devolved Thursday night during a House Oversight Committee markup on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, with GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez getting briefly locked in a heated back and forth. As the panel met to consider the issue of contempt for Garland over his refusal to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur, Greene sparked outrage when she commented on Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s appearance. The Georgia Republican started by asking Democrats on the committee if any of them employ the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the criminal trial in New York of former President Donald Trump. As Republicans have sought to curry favor with Trump, they have gone after Merchan’s daughter, who has ties to Democrats, as they seek to undermine the case. Crockett, a freshman lawmaker from Texas, asked Greene, “Do you know what we’re here for?” Greene shot back: “I don’t think you know what you’re here for … I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.” Ocasio-Cortez

Highway 1 in Big Sur reopens ahead of schedule following landslide in March

Friday, May 17, 2024 1:56PM Despite weather events putting a pause on repairs, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Highway 1 will open eight days ahead of schedule. BIG SUR, Calif. (KFSN) — A portion of Highway 1 leading into Big Sur reopens to the public Friday. This comes more than six weeks after a portion of the road collapsed south of Rocky Creek Bridge. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said there will be one-way traffic with a temporary signal. Before the reopening, a convoy brought primarily residents through the closure twice a day and only recently started taking the public into Big Sur. RELATED: Isolated travelers escorted past Big Sur Hwy 1 road collapse as state parks remain closed The road closure affected not only residents in the area but businesses too. “It’s been a significant financial impact on us, on the Big Sur River Inn as a business as well as the entire business community down here in Big Sur,” said Colin Twohig, General Manager at the Big Sur River Inn. “Mostly hospitality, but every business down here has been impacted by the limited accessibility.” Newsom’s

Five games to circle on 49ers’ path to 14-3 mark, Super Bowl encore

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers will go 14-3 this regular season. Yep, that’s the prediction, leading into a Super Bowl return in New Orleans, where they’ll beat Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers. Too much of a stretch? Look, the 49ers went 12-5 last year, 13-4 in 2022, and they’ve posted double-digit wins in four of the past five seasons. Their roster is still stacked (for at least one more season), especially on offense. They have a Pro Bowl quarterback (Brock Purdy), their backfield features the NFL’s 2023 rushing king (Christian McCaffrey), the three-time All-Pro left tackle (Trent Williams) hasn’t retired, their tight end (George Kittle) reclaimed First-Team All-Pro honors in a year Travis Kelce owned the spotlight, and their wide receivers all have something to prove. That talented cast produced just 22 points – 19 in regulation – and that wasn’t enough to dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Welcoming the Detroit Lions back to Levi’s Stadium on Dec. 30 certainly could pack heavy implications for the playoffs, where the 49ers rallied past the Lions to win last season’s NFC championship. 49ers’ Dre Greenlaw ‘feeling really good’ and it shows as he walks off with Dwight Clark Award

SAN JOSE — Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is three months into his Achilles recovery and he drew encouragement Thursday night by walking onto the California Theatre stage to receive the Dwight Clark Legacy Award. Greenlaw is still recovering from surgery on his left Achilles four days after he devastatingly tore it coming off the 49ers’ sideline in Super Bowl LVIII. “It’s a long, slow process. I’m feeling really good. I’m happy to walk on stage, actually,” Greenlaw said before an audience of about 2,000 who showed up to support the Golden Heart Fund benefiting 49ers’ alumni. ”I’m getting my strength and mobility,” Greenlaw added. “I’m doing whatever it takes to get back on the field as soon as possible.” The 49ers are expected to open training camp in late July with Greenlaw going on the Physically Unable to Perform list, where he likely will remain for the start of the season and thus keep him out the first four games, if not longer until he’s fully healthy. In a contingency plan to fill in for Greenlaw, the 49ers signed De’Vondre Campbell, formerly of the Green Bay

New Clairvaux Vineyard wins big at the California State Fair

VINA – At this year’s California State Fair Wine Competition, the oldest wine competition in the United States, one winery walked away with three of the six coveted Golden Bears, New Clairvaux Vineyard. In the double-blind completion, the judges and controllers of the event had no idea who any of the wine producers were. They even have their computer program used for this intricate judging process of nearly 2,000 entrees. (DN file) According to the winery, wines were grouped by similar categories, such as the varietal Albariño, a Spanish grape grown in many parts of California. The judges were then given up to 12 wines at a time, and they graded either no medal, bronze, silver, or gold. If all three judges give the entry a gold, it is deemed Double Gold. All Double Gold entries in each varietal come back to be judged again to determine which

Tehama County strengthening transient occupancy tax collections

RED BLUFF— Tehama County has begun the process of altering several sections of the county code so the Tax Collector’s Office can better collect transient occupancy taxes. The first change, while seemingly simple, is a significant shift. It removes the term ‘licensed collector’ from the chapter, making the collection of transient occupancy tax the direct responsibility of the tax collector. This change, as explained by Tax Collector Parker Hunt, aligns with the current practice in California, where no licensed collector is involved in collecting transient occupancy taxes. Another change is adding a permit process and giving the Tax Collector’s Office some enforcement mechanisms to enforce the permit. “That will allow us to track these, monitor and then we will have some collection tools,” Hunt said. “We are going to be able to set up auto-pay, and they are going to have an online interface. We are putting a whole collection portal in.” He promised it would be easy for the community to use this system. The third piece of this change is adding a permanent fee to run the program. Caught in the Credit Card Debt Trap | Everyday Cheapkate

Dear Cheapskate: I have three credit cards with interest rates upwards of 30%, the result of late payments in the past. With my limited budget, I can only manage the minimum monthly payment on each, which is more than $200 per account. Despite paying on time for many months now, huge finance (interest) charges have pushed me over the limit on more than one occasion in the past year. It is because of this over-limit issue and the high balances that the creditors won’t lower my interest rates. I can’t keep paying over $600 a month, and I can’t pay more to make a bigger dent in my debt. What else can I say to get them to lower my interest rates? — Jen, Texas Dear Jen: I’m not sure anything you plead, beg or promise will do any good at all. But take heart! Your situation may make you a perfect candidate for credit counseling.
