Columbia Elementary School students take home free books through ‘Magic of Storytelling’ campaign

Friday, May 17, 2024 1:52AM The mission is to cultivate the next generation of storytellers with the “Magic of Storytelling” campaign. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — At Columbia Elementary School Thursday, first grade Cougars were welcomed into the library by pounding paws with Principal Mike Rivard. “Yes! Go shop books!” Rivard told a student. Their normal reading area was transformed with balloons and streamers and, most importantly, books for students. “We’re having the book giveaway.” Rivard said. Through a partnership with ABC30’s parent company Disney, First Book and Educational Employees Credit Union, more than 2,200 books are being given to kids Pre-K to second grade in the Fresno Unified School District. The mission is to cultivate the next generation of storytellers with the “Magic of Storytelling” campaign. It can also help build libraries for children who don’t have books at home. “This is just an added plus so that more kids have more books in their home library and they can spend time in text in the evenings, weekends and throughout the summer,” Rivard said. Each student was able to stroll down tables filled with tales

Federal budget cuts impacting local agencies and resources for victims of crimes

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — In a few weeks, state agencies across California and in the Central Valley could see a significant drop in funds for the upcoming fiscal year. Because of budget cuts, as explained here, and a reduction in federal funds from the Office of Victims of Crime, or VOCA, Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office of Emergency Services is reducing funds to crime victim services by almost 45%. Statewide, this could impact 382 organizations and close to 20,000 people, who will be left without lifesaving services. That includes programs offered by Family Services of Tulare County, which will have to be cut back by 10%. “We are looking at those cuts for all victim service providers, and this includes domestic violence services, human trafficking, sexual assault, child abuse, treatment, legal aid. All of those agencies nationwide and throughout our State will be facing these cuts,” said Hannah Giles, the CEO for the Family Services of Tulare County. The organization has helped over 7,000 victims of violence from 2022 to 2023. The cuts mean they will have less resources – and their reach would decrease

Dine and Dish: Teriyaki & More in central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Teriyaki & More is literally a hole in the wall — inside the ARCO gas station at Cedar and Ashlan in central Fresno. “You would never know, but it doesn’t matter where the food is,” says Sara Pruitt. “As long as it’s good, I will go.” Soupy Doungmala and Steve Sanouvong, who’s showing us some Lao pico de Gallo, entertain as they take orders. “We’re not just doing teriyaki, we’re doing teriyaki and more, like teriyaki tacos, teriyaki fries, teriyaki tortas and more,” Doungmala said. Pruitt came all the way from Coalinga. She was in Fresno for a doctor’s appointment, but this has become her go-to stop. “I still ordered the secret menu – the tacos,” she said. “They are amazing. They have this charred crispiness to them. They are awesome!” First, Steve added the Lao pico on top, followed by sour cream and then a very generous layer of spicy mayo. Soupy is the head chef at Club One Casino, while Steve is trained in computer science. “I am a graduate of Fresno State and then I have an engineering

Serial Fresno bomber sentenced to state prison on Thursday

Friday, May 17, 2024 1:27AM More than a year after a series of bombings rocked Fresno, the man behind them appeared in a county courtroom on Thursday. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — More than a year after a series of bombings rocked Fresno, the man behind them appeared in a county courtroom on Thursday. Scott Anderson, once called a serial bomber, was in court to learn his sentence. The 45-year-old previously pleaded no contest to causing an explosion and arson. A surveillance camera captured one of the explosions. A silver car pulled up, and somebody appeared to throw what police say was a pipe bomb. Within seconds, a Fresno County probation vehicle went up in flames. The bombing was one of seven incidents investigators say Anderson pulled off with homemade pipe bombs. “We had no reason to believe that they were going to stop,” Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said in March 2023. Six of the bombings involved cars, and the seventh involved a mailbox. They all happened between November 2022 and February 2023. Nobody got hurt in the explosions, but there was property damage. Oakland A’s make move to shore up pitching staff

The Oakland A’s moved to try and shore up their shorthanded pitching staff Thursday, acquiring right-hander Brandon Bielak from the Houston Astros for cash considerations. Oakland designated left-hander Easton Lucas for assignment to create 40-man roster room for Bielak, who had been designated himself by the Astros on Saturday to create space for right-hander Cristian Javier on the active roster. Bielak has a 5.71 ERA in 10 relief outings this year, with nine strikeouts and seven walks over 17 1/3 innings. Houston originally selected him in the 11th round of the 2017 amateur draft and he has an 11-13 record with a 4.65 ERA and one save. A’s manager Mark Kotsay told reporters in Houston before Thursday’s game that Bielak will join the A’s on Friday in Kansas City, where Oakland begins a three-game series to finish a 10-game road trip. Bielak will start in the bullpen, but Kotsay said the A’s could build him up as a starter. The A’s, as of late Thursday afternoon, had not finalized who would start their game Friday. The Royals are going with Cole Ragans. The A’s are

Michael Cohen pressed on his crimes and lies as defense attacks key Trump hush money trial witness

NEW YORK — With prosecutors’ hush money case against Donald Trump barreling toward its end, defense lawyers pressed former attorney Michael Cohen on his criminal history and past lies Thursday as they worked to convince jurors not to believe the star witness’ pivotal testimony. Cohen was back in the hot seat for a third day of testimony as defense lawyers painted Trump’s fixer-turned-foe as a spurned former employee who will say whatever it takes to put the presumptive Republican presidential nominee behind bars. Cohen is prosecutors’ final witness — at least for now — as they try to prove Trump schemed to suppress a damaging story he feared would torpedo his 2016 presidential campaign and then falsified business records to cover it up. Cohen’s cross-examination is a crucial moment for Trump’s team to try to chip away at Cohen’s credibility, which could determine the former president’s fate in the case. Under questioning from defense attorney Todd Blanche, Cohen admitted to lying under oath when he pleaded guilty to federal charges, including tax fraud, in 2018 as well as lying to Congress about work he did on a Trump real estate deal

Recipe: Steven Raichlen’s Italian-inspired Grilled Artichokes

This recipe by grilling expert and cookbook author Steven Raichlen was inspired by his travels in Cagliari, Sardinia. It offers an exception to the general rule that it’s easier to grill water-rich vegetables than something like artichokes. Here, the grill’s high, dry heat brings out the natural sweetness of these edible flowers, offering crisp leaves and a smoky flavor enhanced by garlic oil, Raichlen says. The recipe is included in his newly revised “Beer-Can Chicken” cookbook, which landed on bookstore shelves in April. Grilled Artichokes Serves 8 INGREDIENTS 8 artichokes 1 lemon, cut in half 1½ to 2 cups extra virgin olive oil Coarse kosher or sea salt, freshly ground black pepper 4 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley DIRECTIONS Using a sharp knife, cut off and discard the top third of each artichoke. Then cut off the stems, flush with the bottoms, and discard. Using kitchen shears, cut the spiny tips off the artichoke leaves and rub all the cut edges with lemon. Using a grapefruit spoon or melon baller, scrape out the purplish inside leaves and “choke” (fibrous part) of each

Highway 1 in Big Sur to reopen ahead of schedule following landslide in March, Gov. Newsom says

Thursday, May 16, 2024 11:28PM Despite weather events putting a pause on repairs, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Highway 1 will open eight days ahead of schedule. BIG SUR, Calif. (KFSN) — A portion of Highway 1 leading into Big Sur reopens to the public Friday. This comes more than six weeks after a portion of the road collapsed south of Rocky Creek Bridge. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said there will be one-way traffic with a temporary signal. Before the reopening, a convoy brought primarily residents through the closure twice a day and only recently started taking the public into Big Sur. RELATED: Isolated travelers escorted past Big Sur Hwy 1 road collapse as state parks remain closed The road closure affected not only residents in the area but businesses too. “It’s been a significant financial impact on us, on the Big Sur River Inn as a business as well as the entire business community down here in Big Sur,” said Colin Twohig, General Manager at the Big Sur River Inn. “Mostly hospitality, but every business down here has been impacted by the limited accessibility.” Newsom’s

(KFSN) — The Merced County Sheriff’s Office was hard at work on Thursday searching for a missing 17-year-old. “We want disclosure for the family, very much so,” said Sheriff Vern Warnke. Family members said the teen went into the Merced River on Saturday but never returned to shore. “We launched our patrol boat to go back-and-forth. We’ve been on the water several times and then we’ve been in the air several times. We are doing all the stuff we can at this point to keep my deputies safe and we will eventually make a recovery,” said Sheriff Warnke. As the search continues, the Sheriff has a stern warning for the people hoping to use the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers. “I’m not saying, don’t go fishing. Go fishing. I’m just saying don’t do it in a raft or don’t go in a kayak, stay off the water,” said Sheriff Warnke. This video posted to social media on Wednesday shows the rescue attempt

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a full pardon Thursday for a former U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder for fatally shooting an armed demonstrator in 2020 during nationwide protests against police violence and racial injustice. Abbott announced the pardon shortly after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles announced a unanimous recommendation that Daniel Perry be pardoned and have his firearms rights restored. The video above is from a 2023 report when Perry was sentenced. Perry had been in state prison on a 25-year sentence since his 2023 conviction in the killing of Garrett Foster, and was released shortly after the pardon, a prison spokeswoman said. Perry, who is white, was working as a ride-share driver when his car approached a demonstration in Austin. Prosecutors said he could have driven away from the confrontation with Foster, a white Air Force veteran who witnesses said never raised his gun. A jury convicted Perry of murder, but Abbott called it a case of self-defense. “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive district
