Lucky’s Donut House to close after over 33 years in Central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — “Having these folks greet me and know me and welcome us into their establishment is like getting a hug when you walk through that front door,” customer of 20 years, Mary Beth Shields, said. Lucky’s donut house has been a staple for many in Central Fresno for the last 33 years. “I’ve been coming here since I was not even tall enough to look over the last row of donuts,” customer Jack Cox said. Come Memorial Day, the donut shop will be forced to close. “It came to us as a complete shock,” manager and owner Judy Taing said. Taing says the city gave the shop a 60-day eviction notice in March. “We weren’t sure what the notice was in regards to,” Taing explained. “We later found out that we spoke to the property owner, and they want to build a gas station and demo our building down so they can move forward with their project.” She says the donut shop was never notified about an appeals process to try to stop the project. “How was this approved? As a small

The video above is from an earlier story and will be updated. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as 65-year-old Mary Hardin of Helotes, Texas. Officials say Hardin was in the Central Valley serving as part of a Mormon Missionary. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says 54-year-old David Alvarado of Madera is the suspected DUI driver who crashed into Hardin. The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of northbound Highway 41 and Manning Avenue. Downtown Fresno favorite Kids Cafe 2019 closing shop

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A favorite downtown Fresno lunch spot is closing which built a following beyond the food. Kids Café 2019 is closing after six years of hiring students with special needs to learn skills and serve the community. The cafe on Mariposa Mall is still serving up lunch to staff at the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools building in Downtown Fresno but will soon close completely. It was opened to teach vocational skills to more than 600 students ages 16 to 22 from across the county. However, rising costs have made it difficult to keep the business up and running and program leaders are looking to give students opportunities beyond the restaurant industry partnering with more than 40 local businesses across the county. “I think it expands opportunities for students, instead of limiting them,” said Christina Borges, Exec. Dir. of Special Education. “Instead of just coming to one particular place and learning a skill from one particular industry, we can now get our students out into multiple industries.” Staff members are also hoping to give students who live farther away from Fresno possibilities

Helicopter carrying Iran’s president apparently crashes in foggy, mountainous region

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and other officials apparently crashed in the mountainous northwest reaches of Iran on Sunday, sparking a massive rescue operation in a fog-shrouded forest as the public was urged to pray. The likely crash came as Iran under Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel last month and has enriched uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels. Iran has also faced years of mass protests against its Shiite theocracy over an ailing economy and women’s rights – making the moment that much more sensitive for Tehran and the future of the country as the Israel-Hamas war inflames the wider Middle East. Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. State TV said what it called a “hard landing” happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Later, state TV put it farther east near the village of Uzi, but details remained contradictory. Traveling with Raisi were Iran’s

Oakland A’s eager to return home after dismal trip

A flight back to the Bay Area on Sunday night had to sound pretty good to an Oakland A’s team that had spent the previous week and a half away from home. A day off today will probably feel even better. The A’s struck out 12 times and managed only one run through eight innings in an 8-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, extending Oakland’s season-long skid to eight games. The loss also marked the fourth time Oakland has been swept this season. Brady Singer stuck out nine, and Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run triple for the Royals, who completed a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium and handed the A’s their 13th loss in the last 15 games. On a 10-game road trip, the Athletics went a dismal 1-9. “You hit stretches like this,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay told reporters after the game. “You hit some adversity with some injuries, but you just have to keep focusing on grinding out and focusing on that day. Obviously, tomorrow is a good day to take a breather and reset.” After a badly needed day

Jordan Hicks dominates despite velocity drop, SF Giants complete sweep of Rockies

SAN FRANCISCO — On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park, Jordan Hicks took the next step in his transformation into a starting pitcher. Only after losing part of himself. “Just, all the fuel I put in my body left,” Hicks said, elegantly describing the activities that consumed the morning before a mesmerizing pitching performance from the converted reliever. Heaving twice before taking the mound, the man who once hit 105 mph out of the bullpen didn’t register a single reading on the radar gun above 96 mph. Hicks completely abandoned his once-prolific velocity and baffled opposing batters, anyway, navigating through five innings to earn the win as the Giants completed a three-game sweep of the Rockies, 4-1. A day after becoming the final team to win three games in a row, the Giants notched their first series sweep of the season. It was only fitting that it came against their perennial punching bags, the Rockies, who have lost 23 of their 28 meetings in San Francisco since the start of 2021. “He felt fine, he wanted to pitch, and he pitched completely different without

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs admits beating ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, says he’s sorry after video emerges

Sunday, May 19, 2024 8:56PM Sean “Diddy” Combs was seen physically assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in 2016 on hotel surveillance video obtained by CNN. Sean “Diddy” Combs admitted Sunday that he beat his ex-girlfriend in a hotel hallway in 2016 after CNN released video of the attack, saying in a video apology he was “truly sorry” and his actions were “inexcusable.” “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” the music mogul said in a video statement posted Sunday to Instagram and Facebook. The video aired Friday shows Combs, wearing only a white towel, punching and kicking Cassie, an R&B singer who was his protege and longtime girlfriend at the time. The footage also shows Combs shoving and dragging Cassie, and throwing a vase in her direction. Cassie, whose legal name is Cassandra Ventura, sued Combs in November over what she said was years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. The suit was settled the next day, but spurred intense scrutiny of Combs, with several more lawsuits filed in the

Sunday, May 19, 2024 8:25PM It was a packed house as the Class of 2024 and their families honored their accomplishments at Fresno State’s Latino Commencement. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — It’s a moment the students had been working toward their entire college careers. It was a packed house as the Class of 2024, and their families, honored their accomplishments. “It’s nice to celebrate with people who come from similar backgrounds and have a cultural understanding,” graduate Alejandro Rojas said. On Saturday evening, Fresno State held its 48th Chicano/Latino Commencement Ceremony. During the event, graduates heard from some big pillars not just in the Valley, but in the nation. One of them being Xavier Becerra, the first Latino to hold the position of Health and Human Services Secretary. Smiling and emotional graduates walked into the arena, with their family, friends, and professors cheering them on. Decorated grad caps represented where they come from and thanked their families for all the live and support. Becerra served as the keynote speaker. He shared his journey as a first-generation graduate. “Like many of you, I was the son of

Kayaker safe after being rescued Merced River, second rescue this week

Sunday, May 19, 2024 8:10PM A kayaker is safe and out of the water after being rescued from the Merced River. This was the second rescue from the river this week. MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — A kayaker is safe and out of the water after being rescued from the Merced River. The Merced County sheriff’s office says that around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, the Deputies’ Search and Rescue Team responded to the river near Snelling for a stranded kayaker. Deputies used an inflatable rescue boat to get the kayaker out of the water safely. They issued a citation to the kayaker as the Merced and the San Joaquin rivers remain closed. RELATED: Merced and San Joaquin rivers remain closed in Merced County This comes after another rescue in the middle of the river just three days ago. Deputies rescued two people who were hanging onto a tiny tree. Deputies say rescues like this are taking away resources as they continue to search for the 17-year-old that was swept away in the river last weekend. Chico High baseball continues hot streak, beats Red Bluff for first section championship since 2017

CHICO — A culture is key to the success of any athletic program, and when Chico High head coach Brian Thomas took over at the helm of the Panthers’ baseball program, he knew this is where it started. Thomas returned to the home field at Butte College — where he was the pitching coach and associate head coach for 10 seasons — on Saturday, leading the Panthers in their chase for their first Northern Section championship since 2017. The No. 1 seed Panthers (21-6-1) won a pitchers’ duel in Saturday’s Northern Section Division II Super Regional Championship against Red Bluff, defeating the Spartans 2-0. It was Chico’s 14th win in its past 15 games, and the Panthers continued to “ride the wave” wearing their Hawaii-themed, “Ohana” jerseys Saturday. “When you implement a program, your first concern early is are they going to understand the culture you’re trying to implement, which is ultimately more of a mindset,” said Thomas. “Our culture is attitude and effort, plain and simple.” Thomas said that mindset he hoped to implement with the Panthers comes from his previous coaching experience with

DIMES: Is Draymond Green right about Rudy Gobert and Nikola Jokic?

Warriors beat writer Danny Emerman shares his thoughts on the NBA playoffs and beyond. As was the case with Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, there’s no Nikola Jokic stopper. The three-time MVP looks and plays nothing like MJ or Kobe, but that’s the truth. Rudy Gobert looked like a car dealership inflatable tube trying to guard Jokic 1-on-1. Draymond Green said he could do better, but his track record says otherwise. Last time Green and Jokic matched up in the playoffs, Jokic solved the Warriors after two games — he averaged 34.7 points, 15 rebounds and 6.3 assists on 65.6 percent shooting in the last three games of the series. Last time they met in the regular season, Jokic dropped 32/16/16. Just like Gobert and the Wolves, the Warriors often have more success with Kevon Looney checking Jokic and Green roaming behind as a help defender. But again, nobody stops Jokic. The most successful defenders against him in isolation are Ivica Zubac and Jusuf Nurkic — two of the only players who can match his physicality. Gobert and Green will always be linked, not only

Helicopter carrying Iran’s president suffers a ‘hard landing,’ state TV says, and rescue is underway

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered a “hard landing” on Sunday, Iranian state media reported, without elaborating. Some began urging the public to pray for Raisi and the others on board as rescue crews sped through a misty, rural forest where his helicopter was believed to be. Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. State TV said the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Later, the TV put it farther east near the village of Uzi, but details remained contradictory. Traveling with Raisi were Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province and other officials and bodyguards, the state-run IRNA news agency reported. One local government official used the word “crash” to describe the incident, but he acknowledged to an Iranian newspaper that he had yet to reach the site himself. Neither IRNA nor state TV offered any information on Raisi’s condition. However, hard-liners urged the public to pray for him. State TV
