49ers’ Dre Greenlaw ‘feeling really good’ and it shows as he walks off with Dwight Clark Award

SAN JOSE — Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is three months into his Achilles recovery and he drew encouragement Thursday night by walking onto the California Theatre stage to receive the Dwight Clark Legacy Award. Greenlaw is still recovering from surgery on his left Achilles four days after he devastatingly tore it coming off the 49ers’ sideline in Super Bowl LVIII. “It’s a long, slow process. I’m feeling really good. I’m happy to walk on stage, actually,” Greenlaw said before an audience of about 2,000 who showed up to support the Golden Heart Fund benefiting 49ers’ alumni. ”I’m getting my strength and mobility,” Greenlaw added. “I’m doing whatever it takes to get back on the field as soon as possible.” The 49ers are expected to open training camp in late July with Greenlaw going on the Physically Unable to Perform list, where he likely will remain for the start of the season and thus keep him out the first four games, if not longer until he’s fully healthy. In a contingency plan to fill in for Greenlaw, the 49ers signed De’Vondre Campbell, formerly of the Green Bay

New Clairvaux Vineyard wins big at the California State Fair

VINA – At this year’s California State Fair Wine Competition, the oldest wine competition in the United States, one winery walked away with three of the six coveted Golden Bears, New Clairvaux Vineyard. In the double-blind completion, the judges and controllers of the event had no idea who any of the wine producers were. They even have their computer program used for this intricate judging process of nearly 2,000 entrees. DN fileAimee Sunseri, winemaker at New Clairvaux Vineyard, shows off a recent Golden Bear Award from the California State Fair on behalf of the vineyard’s score of 100, “Best of Show – White” wine St. James Assyrtiko. (DN file) According to the winery, wines were grouped by similar categories, such as the varietal Albariño, a Spanish grape grown in many parts of California. The judges were then given up to 12 wines at a time, and they graded either no medal, bronze, silver, or gold. If all three judges give the entry a gold, it is deemed Double Gold. All Double Gold entries in each varietal come back to be judged again to determine which

Tehama County strengthening transient occupancy tax collections

RED BLUFF— Tehama County has begun the process of altering several sections of the county code so the Tax Collector’s Office can better collect transient occupancy taxes. The first change, while seemingly simple, is a significant shift. It removes the term ‘licensed collector’ from the chapter, making the collection of transient occupancy tax the direct responsibility of the tax collector. This change, as explained by Tax Collector Parker Hunt, aligns with the current practice in California, where no licensed collector is involved in collecting transient occupancy taxes. Another change is adding a permit process and giving the Tax Collector’s Office some enforcement mechanisms to enforce the permit. “That will allow us to track these, monitor and then we will have some collection tools,” Hunt said. “We are going to be able to set up auto-pay, and they are going to have an online interface. We are putting a whole collection portal in.” He promised it would be easy for the community to use this system. The third piece of this change is adding a permanent fee to run the program. The tax collector’s office needs

Caught in the Credit Card Debt Trap | Everyday Cheapkate

Dear Cheapskate: I have three credit cards with interest rates upwards of 30%, the result of late payments in the past. With my limited budget, I can only manage the minimum monthly payment on each, which is more than $200 per account. Despite paying on time for many months now, huge finance (interest) charges have pushed me over the limit on more than one occasion in the past year. It is because of this over-limit issue and the high balances that the creditors won’t lower my interest rates. I can’t keep paying over $600 a month, and I can’t pay more to make a bigger dent in my debt. What else can I say to get them to lower my interest rates? — Jen, Texas Dear Jen: I’m not sure anything you plead, beg or promise will do any good at all. But take heart! Your situation may make you a perfect candidate for credit counseling. A reputable credit counselor (there are lots of scam artists out there these days, so be very careful) will contact each of your creditors on your behalf to set

At least 4 dead in Houston after ‘exceptionally’ strong storm hits Texas: Mayor

A rare “high risk” warning for flash flooding issued in Texas and Louisiana. By Emily Shapiro, Max Golembo, and Melissa Griffin Friday, May 17, 2024 9:32AM Clouds dominate once again. A peek of sun or two can’t be ruled out, but overall limited. HOUSTON — At least four people have died Thursday after an “exceptionally” strong storm hit Texas, according to Houston Mayor John Whitmire. Preliminary investigations indicate falling trees caused two deaths and a fallen crane caused one, according to Houston Police Chief Samuel Pena. Urging Houston, Texas, residents to stay home, Whitmire said the city was in “recovery mode” and schools will be closed in the Houston area on Friday. A rare “high risk” warning for flash flooding was issued in Texas and Louisiana early Thursday as the states braced for up to 9 inches of rain in 24 hours. “The high risk area has seen over 600% of their normal rainfall for the past two weeks alone,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned, and the flash flooding could be life-threatening. “High risk” days account for just 4% of days, but they

McDonald’s plans $5 meal deal next month to counter customer frustration over high prices

McDonald’s plans to introduce a $5 meal deal in the U.S. next month to counter slowing sales and customers’ frustration with high prices. The deal would let customers get a four-piece McNugget, small fries, a small drink and either a McDouble burger or a McChicken sandwich for $5 in most areas, according to a person familiar with the deal who wasn’t authorized to discuss its details. The month-long deal is scheduled to begin June 25 and will be advertised nationally. Some stores with higher costs, like those in California or Hawaii, may charge more, the person said. McDonald’s didn’t confirm the upcoming deal when asked about it Thursday by The Associated Press. But the Chicago-based burger giant said last month that it was planning to step up deals to combat slowing customer traffic in some markets. “We know how much it means to our customers when McDonald’s offers meaningful value and communicates it through national advertising,” McDonald’s said in a statement Wednesday. The meal deal would be a substantial discount from the list prices for the items that will be included in the limited-time deal.

Why is President Biden trying to kill the steel deal?

Not too long ago, the name U.S. Steel was symbolic of America’s industrial might. It was the biggest, most important company in the world. Or maybe it just seemed like it was. Whatever it was then, now it’s just a shadow of its former self. But after decades of economic upheaval, recession, and increased competition from Asia, it has a chance to be revived. A significant capital investment, money enough to allow it to play a significant role in the U.S. manufacturing renaissance that some experts say is just around the corner, is on the table. A proposed alliance with Nippon Steel promises job preservation and considerable growth, a prospect that should be of great interest to policymakers. The prospect, however, leaves some people cold. It’s not that they don’t want the money. They’re opposed to the idea of U.S. Steel allying with a Japanese company. They shouldn’t be. Nippon Steel is offering a $14 billion investment that will help restore the firm to its former glory. The deal would preserve every existing job and honor the union contracts now in force. You’d think that

A’s rookie right hander lit up by surging Astros

HOUSTON — The Oakland A’s were hopeful they had left the numerous woes of the 2023 season behind. But most of this month, especially this past week, has been a reminder that the A’s remain a massive work in progress after last season’s 50-win campaign. Rookie Joey Loperfido hit his first major league home run and Cristian Javier pitched six scoreless innings Thursday night to help the Houston Astros beat the Athletics 8-1 and complete a four-game sweep at Minute Maid Park. The victory extended Houston’s winning streak to a season-high five games. The Astros have won seven of their last eight. The A’s, meanwhile, have lost five straight and are 5-10 this month as they fell behind the Astros into fourth place in the American League West. While they Athletics were outscored 17-13 in losing two of three games to the Mariners last week, they were outclassed by the Astros and outscored 22-4 in this series. Oakland (19-27) now closes a 10-game road trip with a three-game set against the Kansas City Royals (26-19), who sit in second place in the AL Central. “Coming

Columbia Elementary School students take home free books through ‘Magic of Storytelling’ campaign

Friday, May 17, 2024 1:52AM The mission is to cultivate the next generation of storytellers with the “Magic of Storytelling” campaign. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — At Columbia Elementary School Thursday, first grade Cougars were welcomed into the library by pounding paws with Principal Mike Rivard. “Yes! Go shop books!” Rivard told a student. Their normal reading area was transformed with balloons and streamers and, most importantly, books for students. “We’re having the book giveaway.” Rivard said. Through a partnership with ABC30’s parent company Disney, First Book and Educational Employees Credit Union, more than 2,200 books are being given to kids Pre-K to second grade in the Fresno Unified School District. The mission is to cultivate the next generation of storytellers with the “Magic of Storytelling” campaign. It can also help build libraries for children who don’t have books at home. “This is just an added plus so that more kids have more books in their home library and they can spend time in text in the evenings, weekends and throughout the summer,” Rivard said. Each student was able to stroll down tables filled with tales

Federal budget cuts impacting local agencies and resources for victims of crimes

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — In a few weeks, state agencies across California and in the Central Valley could see a significant drop in funds for the upcoming fiscal year. Because of budget cuts, as explained here, and a reduction in federal funds from the Office of Victims of Crime, or VOCA, Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office of Emergency Services is reducing funds to crime victim services by almost 45%. Statewide, this could impact 382 organizations and close to 20,000 people, who will be left without lifesaving services. That includes programs offered by Family Services of Tulare County, which will have to be cut back by 10%. “We are looking at those cuts for all victim service providers, and this includes domestic violence services, human trafficking, sexual assault, child abuse, treatment, legal aid. All of those agencies nationwide and throughout our State will be facing these cuts,” said Hannah Giles, the CEO for the Family Services of Tulare County. The organization has helped over 7,000 victims of violence from 2022 to 2023. The cuts mean they will have less resources – and their reach would decrease

Dine and Dish: Teriyaki & More in central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Teriyaki & More is literally a hole in the wall — inside the ARCO gas station at Cedar and Ashlan in central Fresno. “You would never know, but it doesn’t matter where the food is,” says Sara Pruitt. “As long as it’s good, I will go.” Soupy Doungmala and Steve Sanouvong, who’s showing us some Lao pico de Gallo, entertain as they take orders. “We’re not just doing teriyaki, we’re doing teriyaki and more, like teriyaki tacos, teriyaki fries, teriyaki tortas and more,” Doungmala said. Pruitt came all the way from Coalinga. She was in Fresno for a doctor’s appointment, but this has become her go-to stop. “I still ordered the secret menu – the tacos,” she said. “They are amazing. They have this charred crispiness to them. They are awesome!” First, Steve added the Lao pico on top, followed by sour cream and then a very generous layer of spicy mayo. Soupy is the head chef at Club One Casino, while Steve is trained in computer science. “I am a graduate of Fresno State and then I have an engineering

Serial Fresno bomber sentenced to state prison on Thursday

Friday, May 17, 2024 1:27AM More than a year after a series of bombings rocked Fresno, the man behind them appeared in a county courtroom on Thursday. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — More than a year after a series of bombings rocked Fresno, the man behind them appeared in a county courtroom on Thursday. Scott Anderson, once called a serial bomber, was in court to learn his sentence. The 45-year-old previously pleaded no contest to causing an explosion and arson. A surveillance camera captured one of the explosions. A silver car pulled up, and somebody appeared to throw what police say was a pipe bomb. Within seconds, a Fresno County probation vehicle went up in flames. The bombing was one of seven incidents investigators say Anderson pulled off with homemade pipe bombs. “We had no reason to believe that they were going to stop,” Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said in March 2023. Six of the bombings involved cars, and the seventh involved a mailbox. They all happened between November 2022 and February 2023. Nobody got hurt in the explosions, but there was property damage. Oakland A’s make move to shore up pitching staff

The Oakland A’s moved to try and shore up their shorthanded pitching staff Thursday, acquiring right-hander Brandon Bielak from the Houston Astros for cash considerations. Oakland designated left-hander Easton Lucas for assignment to create 40-man roster room for Bielak, who had been designated himself by the Astros on Saturday to create space for right-hander Cristian Javier on the active roster. Bielak has a 5.71 ERA in 10 relief outings this year, with nine strikeouts and seven walks over 17 1/3 innings. Houston originally selected him in the 11th round of the 2017 amateur draft and he has an 11-13 record with a 4.65 ERA and one save. A’s manager Mark Kotsay told reporters in Houston before Thursday’s game that Bielak will join the A’s on Friday in Kansas City, where Oakland begins a three-game series to finish a 10-game road trip. Bielak will start in the bullpen, but Kotsay said the A’s could build him up as a starter. The A’s, as of late Thursday afternoon, had not finalized who would start their game Friday. The Royals are going with Cole Ragans. The A’s are
