The true meaning of  Service Above Self | Shooting the Breeze

I didn’t plan on talking about the amazing Tehama District Fair for three weeks in a row. However, I heard a neat little story, and I’d like to share it. My 80-something-year-old neighbor and his sister wanted to take advantage of the Thursday night free entrance, courtesy of Taco Bell, so they left the Squaw Hill region of Corning en route to Antelope Boulevard in Red Bluff that evening. As they waited in line for their turn to enter the parking lot, they gathered some cash to hand the attendant. Once they reached the man in the orange vest, he told them the kind folks ahead of them wanted to pay it forward. Apparently, this was a continuing theme in the parking lot on Thursday night. The brother and sister were so excited and wanted to let me know there are some pretty generous people in Tehama County. It’s nice to know most of the people around us are kind and decent despite what we hear on the news and read in the police blotter section of this newspaper. I’m really pushing my deadline this

It’s that simple, stay out of the water,” said Warnke. “I’m not trying to be a meanie. New sorority making history at UC Merced

Thursday, May 16, 2024 6:10AM History is being made at UC Merced. MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — History is being made at UC Merced. In November, the university officially chartered a chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, marking its first historically African-American international sorority. A space students say was necessary. ” Across the UC system in general the percentage of black students is very low. So creating and forming spaces for black students to thrive academically, socially and professionally is very important,” said Phi Alpha Chapter president Victoria Lennon. Lennon and Vice President Tatiana Howell say being part of an international sorority and new chapter at UC Merced is an honor and privilege. The sorority has more than 1,000 chapters worldwide and 300,000 members. “Having this space on campus reaffirms that we belong,” Howell explained. “Being able to enter an organization where it’s an instant family, it’s unlike anything I have ever experienced,” added Lennon. Five women are part of the Phi Alpha Chapter and say joining is a lifetime commitment they’re looking forward to. “Our job is to service the black community on our campus

Led by Webb’s strong start, Matos’ highlight-reel grab, SF Giants avoid sweep vs. Dodgers

SAN FRANCISCO — There are few instances where a game in mid-May meets the “must win” qualification. To Logan Webb, based on how Monday and Tuesday unfolded — based on how the season has unfolded —Wednesday’s series finale just about met that benchmark. “I think we were kind of embarrassed with how we played the first two games,” Webb said. “I felt that. We all felt that. I just wanted to go out there and give it all I could. Luckily, it turned out the way it did. There’s not many much-needed wins early on in the season; I thought tonight was a much-needed win.” Led by Webb’s six shutout innings, a performance partially made possible by Luis Matos’ awe-inspiring home run robbery, the Giants (20-25) beat the Dodgers (29-16), 4-1, at Oracle Park, avoiding a sweep and securing their first win against their Southern California rivals this season. With San Francisco having only played 45 games so far, Wednesday night’s game, regardless of outcome, didn’t had the singular power to make or break the club’s year. But given the ebbs and flows of the

Protestors removed by officers after disrupting board of regents meeting at UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — The board of regents meeting at UC Merced was put on hold after a disruption by protestors in the audience on Wednesday. At several points during the meeting, demonstrators in the audience were heard yelling over board members as they were speaking. After a final warning, the board asked officers from the California Highway Patrol to remove the students from the room. “I hereby request the appropriate police officer make a declaration of unlawful assembly and clear the room,” said one of the Board of Regents. This comes after UC Merced students set up an encampment on Sunday ahead of the three-day board of regents meeting on campus. Over the last four days, the crowd has grown significantly larger, and so has the tension. During Tuesday’s meeting, the board of regents told protestors their call to divest from companies and institutions that support Israel was a complex issue that would require selling $32 billion of investments. “I don’t think that’s a very complex issue. I think that corporate greed might be a complex issue and maybe they might be having to

Supreme Court orders La. to use contested map for election

By Mark Sherman and Kevin McGill | Associated Press WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered Louisiana to hold congressional elections in 2024 using a House map with a second mostly Black district, despite a lower-court ruling that called the map an illegal racial gerrymander. The order allows the use of a map that has majority Black populations in two of the state’s six congressional districts, potentially boosting Democrats’ chances of gaining control of the closely divided House of Representatives in the 2024 elections. The justices acted on emergency appeals filed by the state’s top Republican elected officials and Black voters who said they needed the high court’s intervention to avoid confusion as the elections approach. About a third of Louisiana is Black. The Supreme Court’s order does not deal with a lower-court ruling that found the map relied too heavily on race. Instead, it only prevents yet another new map from being drawn for this year’s elections. The Supreme Court could decide at a later date to hear arguments over the decision striking down the Louisiana map. The court’s three liberal justices dissented

With Bailey, Murphy banged up, SF Giants sign veteran to shore up catching depth

SAN FRANCISCO — As Curt Casali entered the Giants’ clubhouse before the team’s series finale against the Dodgers — a clubhouse he had called home on many occasions — his teammates greeted him with an unexpected barrage of confetti, a surprise that Casali admits caught him off guard. “I think I probably shed a tear,” said Casali, who started Wednesday night against the Dodgers. “Coming back here is like coming home. I had some of the best years of my professional baseball life here. Some of my best friends are still here. Not many people get to do it again, so I’m just very, very thankful.” While the circumstances are far from ideal, the Giants, having signed Casali to a one-year deal on Wednesday, are happy to have the veteran backstop back in their clubhouse. “A lot of the things that you want from that position, he does very well,” said manager Bob Melvin. “I know our guys, especially the ones who have been around him before, are excited.” In a corresponding move, catcher Jakson Reetz was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento while fellow backstop Tom

Kurtenbach: The 49ers’ 2024 schedule is out, so let’s make some reckless predictions

The 49ers have been done no favors by the NFL scheduling computers. Just another reason to hate the machines. Sure, the defending NFC champions will be given an easy enough entry into the season, but the team’s November and December are poised to be brutal, with eight of the team’s final 10 games coming against playoff teams last season. Shake off those Super Bowl hangovers early, gang — any early loss could prove fatal to the team’s bid to return to the Big Game. Here’s a quick thought on the 49ers’ 17 games and a way-too-early, please-don’t-hold-me-to-this prediction on each contest: Week 1: Jets [Monday Night Football] This game is a cruel joke on Aaron Rodgers, who tore his Achilles tendon in last season’s Monday Night Football opener. It couldn’t happen to a nicer, saner guy! Prediction: Win (1-0); We’re fast approaching the return of Robert Saleh to the Bay Week 2: at Minnesota The Vikings could be a good team this upcoming season, but they’re going to be working through some things at the beginning of the season. Will the Vikes go with Sam
