JuJu Watkins and No. 7 USC hold off No. 4 Connecticut to win in a thriller

HARTFORD, Conn. —  In a marquee matchup Saturday night, No. 7 USC defeated perennial powerhouse No. 4 Connecticut 72-70, avenging its Elite Eight loss to the Huskies in April and strengthening its status as one of the nation’s elite teams. “This is a really significant win, and it’s a significant win because of the stature of the UConn program and what [Connecticut coach] Geno Auriemma has done for our sport,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “I told [the team] in [the locker room] — for me, for my entire high school and on, this is what basketball excellence was, this is what we saw. And it’s challenged all of us to want to be better, to find players who want to be better and be that elite.” Undeterred playing in front of a sold-out crowd on the road, USC opened the game with a 9-0 run, capitalizing on cold shooting and defensive lapses from the Huskies. Buoyed by 15 points from JuJu Watkins, the Trojans shot 48.6% from the floor in the first half, including seven for 11 from three-point range, to take a 42-29 lead

Lakers rally late, then hold off Kings for another win

SACRAMENTO —  The test was obvious the minute the Lakers got their schedule for the 2024-25 season. They would make one trip to Sacramento to face the Kings twice, two games against a team whose pace and physicality have been the difference in multiple years of dominance over the Lakers. If, somehow, the Lakers were able to beat the Kings in their first meeting at the Golden 1 Center, they’d need to try and do it again a day and a half later. Through the first few months of the schedule, the Lakers had seemingly exorcised their Kings demons. They beat them in the first week of the season, quieting the noise around Domantas Sabonis’ dominance against Anthony Davis. Thursday, in their first game against the Kings in Sacramento, Davis was terrific in a game Lakers coach JJ Redick called his “favorite” win of the season. To do it again? That would require sustained attention, sustained effort and sustained execution. It would take, as coach Doc Rivers used to tell Redick’s Clippers teams, the Lakers needing to hang onto the rope in the game of tug-of-war.

Blake Lively accuses director, co-star of ‘It Ends with Us’ of sexual harassment, smear campaign

Actor Blake Lively accused “It Ends With Us” director and co-star Justin Baldoni of sexually harassing her and seeking to smear her reputation after she spoke out about a “hostile work environment” that nearly derailed the film. In a legal complaint filed this week, Lively alleges she raised concerns about inappropriate behavior by Baldoni, who co-founded Wayfarer Studios, the company that owns the film. She also outlines complaints against Jamey Heath, the chief executive of Wayfarer and the film’s producer, and names other defendants. “Ms. Lively seeks to set the record straight, to hold the Wayfarer Parties and Associates accountable, and to shine a light on this new form of retaliation so that it will not be used against any others who seek to stand up and speak out against sexual harassment,” states the complaint, obtained previously by the New York Times and the Associated Press. The document, which is a precursor to a lawsuit, was reportedly filed Friday with the California Civil Rights Department. The accusations shed light on the working conditions and alleged behavior Lively and her female colleagues endured as they were

No. 18 UCLA gives up 16-point lead, losing to North Carolina in a heartbreaker

NEW YORK —  It seemed almost incalculable, all the things that would have to go wrong for UCLA to lose its massive lead midway through the second half. With Tyler Bilodeau making one three-pointer after another, including one that finally rattled in after bouncing around the rim, the Bruins appeared well on their way to a breakthrough against a fellow blue blood that had tormented them in every meeting for nearly a quarter of a century. Bilodeau’s fifth three-pointer of the game in as many tries gave UCLA a 16-point lead over North Carolina with 12 minutes 50 seconds left Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, quieting a crowd largely swathed in Carolina blue. Barely a minute later, a whistle blew. Bilodeau was called for his fourth foul. That created a bigger issue than the turnovers, missed free throws and needless fouls that would ensue. “The problem,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said, who immediately yanked his star player, “was Tyler Bilodeau wasn’t in the game.” Without Bilodeau, who sat out the next 6½ minutes, the No. 18 Bruins wilted badly during a brutal 76-74 loss in

Normally, psychedelic mushrooms do not cause liver damage, and officials said it is “highly unusual” for hepatotoxic mushrooms to be mistaken for psychedelic mushrooms. Santa Barbara senior center reopens after receiving major upgrades

Earlier this month, the Louise Lowery Davis Center at 111 W. Victoria St. in Santa Barbara reopened with some major upgrades. “[There’s] additional lighting, we’ve raised all the ceilings up, so that feels a lot more open and airy,” said Rich Hanna, Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Manager. Hanna says the project took around five years to complete with crews making improvements to the interior and exterior of the building in addition to a new outdoor patio. The Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking partners to expand the offering of free programs and services available at the community center. “Youve got your event space, to your activity room, out to the courtyard and we can do events for up to 114 people,” Hanna said. “Most of our senior activities right now, we probably have anywhere from eight to 10 participants in each of those activities that we currently offer.” The century-old building was built in 1923 as part of Santa Barbaras first public high school and has served as a community recreation center since 1933. “It’s nice to bring it on and actually have
