Kay Granger of Texas denied she is in memory care after a report in the Dallas Express said she has not been in Washington in months and that she had been found at Tradition-Clearfork in Fort Worth, which offers assisted living and memory care, in addition to independent living for seniors.  Tradition-Clearfork on Sunday declined to comment, but Granger’s son confirmed to the Dallas Morning News that she was a resident. However, he said that she’s in the independent living wing, not the memory care wing of the facility. He also acknowledged that his mother was “having some dementia issues late in the year.” The Dallas Express, a conservative outlet, first reported the news.  Granger, who has represented the 12th Congressional District since 1997, announced in late 2023 she would not run for reelection and abruptly stepped down from her post as chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee in late March.

New California laws impacting law enforcement, prosecution set to take effect

As the new year inches closer, so do several new laws taking effect in California. San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow says some of those new laws may impact crime-fighting efforts on the Central Coast. Provisions in Proposition 36, which was passed by voters in November, allow for stiffer penalties, including felony charges, for certain drug and theft crimes. It also allows for longer sentences impacting repeat offenders. “We will now be able to elevate certain cases from misdemeanor to felony for people that are repeat offenders, repeat thieves, repeat theft crimes, [and] repeat drug crimes,” Dow said. “It creates a new class of drug possession cases where the court will mandate that the defendant, if he agrees, take treatment for his drug addiction or her drug addiction. Dow says he has been working with law enforcement and local businesses to post signs warning would-be thieves that San Luis Obispo County will enforce these new provisions. He adds that the rehabilitation provided in the mandated drug treatment is also important. Today, there’s really very little way that the court can mandate treatment at

Family of Noah Cuatro Reaches Tentative Settlement With LA County

Relatives of a 4-year-old Palmdale boy whose 2019 death was originally reported as a drowning and later led to a criminal conviction of his parents have reached a tentative settlement in their lawsuit against Los Angeles County that took to task the decisions of social workers. Evangelina Hernandez, the great-grandmother of the late Noah Cuatro, brought the wrongful death suit against the county in July 2020 on behalf of Noah’s 6-year-old sister and two brothers, ages 5 and 11, criticizing the actions of employees of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. On Friday, Hernandez’s attorneys filed court papers with Pomona Superior Court Judge Christian Gullon notifying him of a “conditional” settlement with the county that is subject to approval by the county Claims Board and the Board of Supervisors. The court papers also indicated an “unconditional” accord reached with an Altadena residential campus for young boys. No terms were divulged. In April, Lancaster Superior Court Judge Robert Chu sentenced Jose Maria Cuatro Jr. to 32 years to life in prison, and Ursula Elaine Juarez to 22 years to life for Noah’s

Visitors to Riverside’s annual Festival of Lights warned about parking scam

Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside awash in Christmas lights in 2022. (Allen J. Schaben/Los Angeles Times) Dec. 22, 2024 10:51 AM PT With visitors flocking to Riverside for the annual Festival of Lights, city officials are warning people to be on the lookout for fake QR codes posted by scammers at parking pay stations. The fraudulent QR codes direct people to websites that ask for credit card or debit card information in an apparent effort to steal financial data. “Scammers were putting different QR code details over existing ones that would direct them to a similar looking site” to the city parking portal, said Ryan Railsback, public information officer for the police department. The city has attempted to find and remove fake QR codes, “but we want the public to be aware,” Railsback said. He recommended going directly to the city’s parking website https://parkatriverside.com/ instead of scanning the city’s QR code be safe. Possible rain, high surf forecast for Los Angeles region this holiday week

High surf and possible rain are forecast for the L.A. region this holiday week, with conditions expected to improve by Christmas Day. Although there’s a chance of rain beginning late morning on Tuesday, which is Christmas Eve, forecasters said it will likely be short-lived, totaling around a tenth of an inch or so. “By Christmas Day, we’re not going to see any rain,” said Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Oxnard. Temperatures on Christmas Day will be in the mid-60s, possibly reaching low 70s in some of the valleys. A high surf advisory is in effect for the Los Angeles area through late Tuesday into early Wednesday, with 8- to 12-foot waves expected on north- and west-facing beaches. The highest surf is expected late Monday afternoon into early Tuesday morning. “With surf like that, we’re expecting very dangerous rip currents and kind of almost advising people to stay out of the water,” Lewis said. “But if you’re a surfer who’s into this, just remain in view of the lifeguard.” Lewis said Ventura County could see up to 18-foot waves late Monday

Dylan Andrews must reassert himself: Five takeaways from UCLA’s excruciating loss

Dec. 22, 2024 10:15 AM PT 1 NEW YORK — Success in March, when the games matter most, is rooted in strong guard play. Fortunately for UCLA, this is still December. That means the Bruins have plenty of time to resolve what might be their biggest issue. His game-winning shot against Oregon notwithstanding, Dylan Andrews has regressed since emerging as one of the top point guards in the Pac-12 over the final months of last season. A bottoming out came Saturday during No. 18 UCLA’s 76-74 loss to North Carolina at Madison Square Garden in the CBS Sports Classic. Andrews missed five of six shots and finished with more turnovers than assists, including the critical turnover in the final minute that allowed the Tar Heels to complete their comeback from a 16-point deficit. Andrews took an inbounds pass in one corner of the backcourt and immediately had the ball slapped out of his hands and off his leg out of bounds. It was the third time in the last four games that the usually sure-handed Andrews has finished with more turnovers than assists. Getting Andrews

Mayorkas says “irresponsible politics” killed a “terrific solution” on the border

DHS Secretary: “Irresponsible politics” killed immigration solution DHS Secretary says a “terrific solution” to immigration was killed by “irresponsible politics” 13:35 Washington — Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said as his time at the helm of the nation’s immigration enforcement comes to a close that “a really terrific solution was killed by irresponsible politics” when the bipartisan border deal fell apart earlier this year.  Mayorkas pointed to the  agreement on a border package  reached by a bipartisan group of Senate negotiators in February reached after months of deliberations that would have marked the first comprehensive border security policy overhaul in decades — and give the president far-reaching powers to clamp down on unlawful border crossings. But the bill was quickly rejected by Republicans after President-elect Donald Trump expressed his opposition.  Following the legislation’s failure, the Biden administration instituted asylum restrictions that dramatically cut off the flow of immigration. When asked about the timing amid criticism from Republicans that the Biden administration possessed the authority without Congress to act on the border, Mayorkas acknowledged that the administration may have taken the action more quickly

Traffic chaos unfolds during KTLA reporter’s live shot

Any Los Angeles-area driver can relate — the freeway accidents that cause traffic jams always happen at the worst possible times. That appeared to be the case on Sunday morning. Weather officials forecast ‘high to potentially damaging’ surf, coastal flooding ahead of holidays

“High to potentially damaging” surf and coastal flooding are in store for Southern California as the holidays approach.  The National Weather Service forecasts peak surf heights at west and northwest facing beaches in Ventura County to reach 18 feet, while in L.A. and southern Santa Barbara counties, swells could reach up to 12 feet.  Further north, peak surf heights in the Central Coast could reach as high as 25 feet, NWS said.  “Surf heights are expected to peak Monday into Tuesday morning where there is an increased risk of damaging surf and coastal flooding of beach roadways and parking lots for the Central and Ventura coasts,” weather officials stated. “This will cause dangerous conditions for boaters near shore and around exposed harbor entrances.”  Fitness influencer dies 3 months after being shot during attempted robbery in Los Angeles KTLA 5’s Omar Lewis was live at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday morning, where large waves were seen bashing against the base of the pier, sending water over the handrails on the platform and likely getting some beachgoers wet. Inside China’s alleged spy scheme to influence governments in L.A. County and far beyond

It was no secret that authorities believed the Chinese government intended to infiltrate state and local governments across America. For years, the FBI has warned cities and police agencies about foreign actors potentially trying to influence politics. Two years ago, U.S. intelligence officials issued a bulletin stating that the Chinese were collecting information about local officials. Now, federal prosecutors allege that one Chinese spy operation was underway in the San Gabriel Valley, with the aim of gaining political allies to the country’s cause. The scope of the operation remains unclear, but court documents and sources familiar with the probe said at least one local council member was caught up in the alleged scheme. The indictment is more a window into routine municipal politics than the stuff of an international spy thriller. But experts say the case sheds light on Chinese tactics and the scope of how they are attempting to gain influence in America. Horace Frank, the former assistant chief of the Los Angeles Police Department who oversaw the counterterrorism bureau, said the Chinese government understands that local politicians — even with their limited current
