Dodgers World Series MVP Freddie Freeman undergoes surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers have revealed that World Series MVP Freddie Freeman had surgery on his right ankle Thursday morning, Dodgers Nation reports. “Earlier today, Dodger first baseman Freddie Freeman underwent surgery on his right ankle consisting of debridement and the removal of loose bodies,” the team stated. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Kenneth Jung at Kerlan Jobe in Los Angeles. The Dodgers anticipate that Freeman will be able to engage in baseball activities during spring training. Freeman initially sprained his ankle in late September during a series against the San Diego Padres. He was expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. These glasses let you ‘see’ conversations in real time

When I heard about AI glasses that let you “see” what people are saying, I was skeptical. But after trying them on, I was proven wrong. The Hearview AI Subtitle Glasses give you closed captions for the real world. The right lens has a small, transparent display that shows you conversations, but you can still see the people you’re talking to. “The mission is to help using the technology to help others,” said Ting Chen, Vice President of Marketing for the company behind the glasses. The glasses are lightweight but a bit thicker than your typical spectacles. They connect wirelessly to a smartphone, which uses the Hearview app to listen to what people are saying. Those conversations are transcribed in near real time using AI, and then the words are displayed on the tiny see through screen. The system seems to be very accurate and works with 13 languages – and although there is a bit of a delay, it won’t necessarily matter if you can’t hear the words being spoken out loud. The glasses come in one style but can be outfitted with a

Naked man tied to nearby homicide arrested with ax on Ventura County high school football field

A naked man arrested at a Ventura County high school was linked to a killing at a nearby home, according to reports. The 24-year-old man, identified in sheriff radio communications and booking records as Zuberi Sharp, was being investigated for a death Thursday at a house in the 400 block of Jeanne Court. Ventura County Sheriff’s Captain Ken Truitt said the person who called police was hysterical and said her baby had been murdered, according to the Ventura County Star. The man was arrested around 8 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies who were chasing him said that he was armed with an ax, according to recordings of radio communications during the incident. They also suggested the ax might be tied to the death on Jeanne Court. “The item used, which was an ax, is probably still in his possession,” said one deputy, according to the radio communication. The sheriff’s deputies called to lock down Newbury Park High School after the man ran onto campus and got onto the football field. Many students were still at the school despite the late hour. The teen victim, who was a

Man jailed for death of woman at “slapping therapy” workshop

December 6, 2024 / 12:07 PM EST / CBS/AP An alternative healer who advocated “slapping therapy” to treat a range of maladies was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for the death of a 71-year-old diabetic woman who stopped taking insulin during one of his workshops. Hongchi Xiao, 61, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence for failing to get medical help for Danielle Carr-Gomm as she howled in pain and frothed at the mouth during the fourth day of a workshop in October 2016. Xiao, of Cloudbreak, California, promoted paida lajin therapy, getting patients to slap themselves repeatedly to release “poisonous waste” from the body. The technique has its roots in Chinese medicine but critics say it has no scientific basis and patients often end up with bruises, bleeding – or worse. Carr-Gomm was one of two of Xiao’s patients who died. He was extradited from Australia, where he had been convicted of manslaughter after a 6-year-old boy died when his parents withdrew his insulin medication after attending one of his workshops in Sydney. “I consider you dangerous even though you do not

Feds aim to seize $3.4M from Russian oligarch after sale of Burbank recording studio

The United States Department of Justice is moving to seize $3.4 million that a Russian oligarch made by selling a Burbank recording studio. Oleg Deripaska, who has been under sanctions since 2018 and was linked to Trump advisor Paul Manafort, sold the studio for $3.4 million in 2019, the United States Department of Justice said in a news release. Seamus Hughes’ Court Watch was the first to report the news. Prosecutors did not name the specific studio, though it’s likely Ocean Studios Burbank, as the name of Deripaska’s ownership company was Ocean Studios California LLC. Wells Fargo ultimately froze the Ocean Studios bank account due to its relationship with Deripaska, and the federal government is now working to seize the more than $3.4 million in that account. Michael Khoo, co-director of the multiagency Task Force KleptoCapture that targets Russian assets in response to the invasion of Ukraine, pointed out that “those who have illicitly accumulated great wealth in support of lawlessness and international chaos invariably turn to the safety and stability of the United States’ rule of law principles in order to preserve their ill-gotten

VA Loma Linda employees think manager’s murder may have been work-related

Employees of the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System are concerned that a manager’s killing last month at his Rancho Cucamonga home could have been workplace-related violence. Joshua Watson, who was killed by a male assailant at his home in the 13100 block of Joliet Drive on Nov. 25, was a supervisor at the medical center and “may have been involved in a dispute with a former employee,” the Press-Enterprise reports. The exact nature of that alleged dispute has not been made public, and while hospital officials have mourned the loss of Watson, 43, as a person and as the facility’s chief supply chain officer, further details have been kept hidden to protect the ongoing investigation. There is no current threat to VA Loma Linda or its employees, officials said. though additional security is on site. Employees, however, are ill at ease. “It’s a scary place to work,” one employee told the newspaper.

TikTok loses court bid to stop U.S. ban. Supreme Court appeal is expected

TikTok’s future in the U.S. is now in greater jeopardy after the popular social video app on Friday lost a major court battle as it tries to prevent its banishment. In May, TikTok sued the government, asking the U.S. Court of Appeals to declare unconstitutional a law that would require its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations or face a ban in the country. Legislators backing the law said a ban or sale was necessary to address national security concerns posed by the app’s ties to China. The law, signed by President Biden, is set to go into effect Jan. 19. TikTok had said in its lawsuit that the law violated its 1st Amendment rights to free speech. More than 170 million Americans use the video app, where people share dance routines, cooking tips, funny videos and news stories. “On the merits, we reject each of the petitioners’ constitutional claims,” the judges said in their decision issued Friday. Legal experts said they anticipate TikTok will appeal its case to the Supreme Court. “The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting

Review: Amy Adams plays a harried mom who unleashes her own liberation in ‘Nightbitch’

In its least manageable moments, early motherhood must feel like an unpaid job with no breaks, an inarticulate boss and working conditions designed to strip all that’s civil from one’s sense of self. But “Nightbitch,” a sincerely surreal domestic fable from writer-director Marielle Heller (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”), posits a last refuge: If one is going to the dogs, then jump in on all fours. Amy Adams’ harried, short-tempered suburban mom is, by all accounts, exactly the kind of attentive, loving and accommodating parent to her 2-year-old boy that society wants (OK, demands): there for the cooking, the cleaning and playtime; there for sleepless nights and tired days; there for guitar-accompanied book time at the library with moms who always seem more put-together; there to jump in when dad (Scoot McNairy) glides in from his business trips and shows cluelessness about child care. Sure, pretending to be doggies with an enthusiastic toddler looks like fun and mommy used to be an artist, so there are still some creative sparks left in a brain that has long ceded individual identity to full-time motherhood. But

Shots fired near 60 Freeway force complete closure of eastbound lanes

A shooting during morning rush-hour traffic has forced a complete closure of the eastbound lanes of the 60 Freeway in Hacienda Heights on Friday morning. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the shots were fired in the area of 1100 7th Avenue, which is near a Denny’s restaurant adjacent to the 60 Freeway. The shots were reported at 6:48 a.m. A shooting near the 60 Freeway on Friday forced a shutdown of all eastbound lanes in the Hacienda Heights area. (Sigalert) A Sigalert was issued for the closure on Friday morning, warning commuters that the delays could last up to one hour. The lanes were closed between Crossroads Parkway and 7th Avenue. The off-duty firefighter who went missing in Long Beach is now presumed dead

The search for an off-duty Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter in Long Beach has transitioned from a rescue to a recovery, authorities have confirmed. The man, identified publicly only as a 28-year-old, is now presumed to be dead. He went for a recreational dive with two friends on Wednesday night at the Port of Long Beach. The search began when only two of the three returned to the boat, at about 10:15 p.m. After 19 hours of searching in murky conditions, authorities deemed that the diver’s “survivability profile” along with the decreased visibility made it “difficult to sustain prolonged search operations.” The massive search included 24 divers and numerous boats. “Thus, based on these factors and the extended time since the diver was last seen, the decision has made by Unified Command to transition from a search and rescue mission to a recovery operation,” said Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jake Heflin.

U.S. job growth bounces back in November, a reassuring sign that the labor market remains healthy

WASHINGTON —  Job growth rebounded in November from the weather-related stall in hiring the previous month, fresh evidence that the labor market remains healthy despite signs of a slowing economy overall, according to new government data released Friday. The nation’s unemployment rate edged up to 4.2% last month from 4.1% as more people reported being unemployed and others left the labor force. That is still low by historical standards, although the rate has crept up from 3.7% at the start of the year. The report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which was slightly stronger than economists had expectated, won’t make it easier for members of the Federal Reserve as they weigh whether to cut interest rates further in their final 2024 meeting later this month. The Fed wants to strike a balancing act between maintaining stable economic and job growth, which are showing signs of slowing, and continuing to bring inflation down as it remains above their 2% target. Friday’s report showed that employers added 227,000 net new jobs in November, led by big gains in healthcare and leisure and hospitality. The retail industry

Review: ‘Day of the Fight’ connects with an old combo, a down-and-out boxer seeking redemption

The dark romance of boxing movies gets dusted off and sentimentalized anew in the New York-set drama “Day of the Fight,” actor Jack Huston’s writing and directing debut. Sometimes lumbering though always well-intentioned, it’s an ode to tales of lovable, scrappy galoots who keep a glint in their pummeled eyes. You’d be surprised how far that kind of low-hum redemption energy can still carry a movie, even one as throwback-engineered as this. It stars Michael Pitt, too, another signal of the comeback generosity being seeded here, since the actor, who’s had off-screen troubles, has felt absent from the industry that once anointed him an up-and-comer. That Huston thought of his old “Boardwalk Empire” co-star for the role of down-and-out middleweight legend “Irish” Mike Flannigan instead of playing it himself feels like a gift of sorts and Pitt, his once effortlessly smoldering, fashion-spread pout having settled into a heavy-lidded, bruised pucker, treats the opportunity as such. He embodies the part with mended-wing gratitude. Huston, meanwhile, introduces Pitt’s Mike as if already a last-chance icon, waking up in his dingy but silhouette-friendly apartment — Peter Simonite’s monochrome
