Search underway for person missing two days after car plunged off Ventura County cliff

Crews search Monday night for a person believed missing in a crash that went unreported for nearly two days. (OnScene.TV) Authorities launched a search for a missing person Monday afternoon after learning that a car had tumbled hundreds of feet down a steep cliff near Point Mugu two days earlier. It’s unclear why one of the occupants of the vehicle waited days to report the incident, which took place off of Deer Creek Road northwest of the Malibu border on Saturday, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. The individual who eventually reported the crash managed to self-extricate from the mangled car and leave the scene in another vehicle — but did not call 911 that night, the Fire Department said. Firefighters told OnScene.TV that a white Cadillac SUV rolled over multiple times before coming to rest on its roof 1,000 feet below the road. On Monday afternoon, the occupant reported that two people who were in the car during the incident were missing, and a search was launched. Shortly after the search began, one of the passengers was located at home, the Fire Department

After 40+ years, KSBY’s chief videographer puts down the camera

Here at KSBY, we are saying goodbye and congratulations to a very special member of our team. Operations Director Kelly Teel is retiring after more than 40 years at the station. While you are most familiar with those you see on camera, Kelly works behind the scenes. He’s the station’s chief videographer and in charge of the crew you don’t see that brings you the news every day. He works with new reporters teaching them the ropes of videography and maintains the video gear. Over the past 40 years, Kelly has often had a front-row seat to the area’s biggest stories, working with reporters to bring you the pictures you see on your screens. In 1999, the high-profile murder trial of Rex Krebs was moved to Monterey County because of pre-trial publicity. Kelly and reporter John Meyers headed north to make sure Central Coast residents were kept informed. In a bit of history repeating itself, nearly 20 years later, Kelly and Richard Gearhart headed north once again for another high-profile murder case this time, the Paul Flores trial. Woman berates family with racist comments on LAX bus

Pervez Taufiq and his young family had just landed at LAX and were almost at the end of a long travel week when a fellow passenger began berating them with racist comments. Taufiq, a well-known photographer, recorded the encounter as it took place on their United Airlines shuttle bus. “Your family is from India,” the woman says to him. “You have no respect. You have no rules. Do you think you can push everyone, push push. That’s what you think you are.” In an interview with KTLA’s John Fenoglio, Taufiq says the woman in the video was on their flight and at one point had started asking their 11-year-old son whether he was from India. “She looked at our sons – that’s two younger ones which are four and eight – and basically started saying shut up to them, just shut up, and so, to say that really made me snap and I said you can’t talk to my sons that way,” explains Taufiq. Later on, on the bus, Taufiq says the situation escalated. “You guys are f***ing crazy,” the woman says to Taufiq while

LA Animal Services General Manger Resigns Amid Challenges

A spokesperson for Bass told City News Service Dains resigned effective Saturday. City officials had not explained the reason for her absence. Annette Ramirez, who led Los Angeles Animal Services on an interim basis for a year and half prior to Dains’ appointment in 2023, again began leading the department in September. Dains, who formerly led Long Beach’s animal services department, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Dains addressed issues related to volunteers during her tenure but still faced overcrowding and other challenges at the department’s six shelters, some have plagued the department long before her arrival. A recent Los Angeles Times analysis found about 1,224 dogs were euthanized, an increase of 72%, from January to September compared to the same period last year. Dodgers to Introduce Blake Snell After Signing $182 Million Contract

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell will be introduced by the Dodgers Tuesday at Dodger Stadium three days after agreeing to terms on a five-year, $182 million contract. ESPN had reported Tuesday that Snell and the Dodgers had agreed on a contract, pending a physical, which includes opt-outs, some deferred money and a $52 million signing bonus. Snell, who will turn 32 on Wednesday, on Tuesday posted a photoshopped picture on his Instagram account of himself wearing a Dodger uniform with his familiar No. 7 with the caption reading “LA” with an eyeballs emoji. The contract is the third largest for a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history based on total value, behind only David Price’s $217 million deal with the Boston Red Sox in 2015 and Clayton Kershaw’s $215 million contract with the Dodgers in 2014, according to ESPN. Snell won the National League Cy Young Award in 2023 when he was 14-9 with a league-best 2.23 ERA while pitching for the San Diego Padres. Snell was a free agent following the season, with the Dodgers seeking to sign him late in

Lakers lose to Minnesota in lowest-scoring game of the LeBron era in L.A.

MINNEAPOLIS —  LeBron James shrugged. He rolled his eyes. He complained to the refs. He hung his head. There was no discretion Monday in Minnesota — everything you needed to know about the Lakers and their leading scorer was on display in big, bold letters. “It’s everything,” James said. “It’s the rhythm. I just feel off rhythm these last three, four games.” Playing on the second night of back-to-back games, James looked as uncomfortable as ever in a Lakers uniform as he and his team failed over and over at the game’s simplest task — putting the ball in the basket. Minnesota beat the Lakers 109-80 on Monday, their fifth loss in their last seven games. James has now gone four straight games without a made three-pointer, and the Lakers’ offense has failed to score 110 points or more in five of its last six games. The 80 points is the Lakers’ worst offensive game in James’ time with the team and the worst for the organization since Jan. 22, 2017. Anthony Davis called the game “disgusting.” For James, it’s been a miserable stretch of offensive

Francesca Eastwood won’t be charged with felony domestic violence, D.A. says

Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Oscar-winning actor-director Clint Eastwood, will avoid criminal charges following her October arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, the Los Angeles district attorney’s office confirmed. Eastwood, a 31-year-old actor whose credits include “Twin Peaks” and “Juror #2,” was arrested Oct. 12 in Beverly Hills on suspicion of felony domestic violence, according to police. She was released on $50,000 bail. A week later, prosecutors declined her case for insufficient evidence. Police did not release specifics about the arrest. TMZ reported that a drive around Beverly Hills allegedly turned into a verbal, then physical, argument between Eastwood and her boyfriend, and the “Mrs. Eastwood & Company” reality TV star was subsequently arrested. Representatives for Eastwood have not responded to multiple requests by The Times for comment regarding the arrest. “Officers conducted an investigation, and based on statements and injuries, Francesca Ruth Fisher Eastwood of Los Angeles was arrested for a felony, PC 273.5 – Domestic Violence, and was booked at BHPD Jail,” Beverly Hills Police Department Lt. GOP insiders sought Hegseth’s removal as leader of veterans’ group in 2016

New misconduct claims against Trump pick Hegseth New misconduct claims against Trump pick Pete Hegseth 02:54 Monterey, California — The battle over President-elect Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, may become a test of loyalty for Republican stalwarts — some of whom stood at the center of a bid 10 years ago to remove Hegseth as the head of a veterans’ charity over allegations of financial mismanagement, repeated intoxication and sexual misconduct. One of those who led the effort to oust Hegseth as head of the Concerned Veterans of America in 2016 was Jessie Jane Duff, a Marine veteran who served as one of President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign executive directors, according to multiple Republican insiders familiar with the events, all of whom spoke on the condition they not be named over fear of reprisals from those within the party. Duff sought Hegseth’s removal from leadership roles in the veterans’ group, CBS News has learned.  While she worked at Concerned Veterans for America as a senior military adviser, Duff allegedly complained about Hegseth’s frequent public intoxication, poor leadership and the toxic work climate

These are the worst cities for package theft in 2024

(NewsNation) — With nearly $1 billion in losses last year, New York City is the worst metro for package theft in the United States, according to a recent report. The annual study by SafeWise estimates that 120.5 million packages were snatched off American porches in 2023, resulting in a total loss of nearly $16 billion. In dollar terms, New York City was hit the hardest by porch pirates, with $945M in losses last year. Philadelphia ($450M) and Chicago ($262M) were next on the list. Washington, D.C. ($232M), and Houston ($207M) rounded out the top five in SafeWise’s annual ranking. But cities with the highest financial losses weren’t necessarily those with the most package theft incidents. Of the top ten worst cities for package theft, Cleveland had the most thefts per capita — nearly 1,400 per 1,000 households. That suggests thieves struck the same houses multiple times. Third expensive package reported intercepted in Southern California this month Other repeat hot spots included Beckley, West Virginia (2,391 incidents per 1,000 households); Hot Springs, Arkansas (2,107 per 1,000); and Goldsboro, North Carolina (1,880 per 1,000), according to Safewise.

Hawaiian Gardens man sentenced for distributing fentanyl that led to teen’s fatal overdose

A Los Angeles County man was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison on Monday for selling “purported black tar heroin that, in fact, was fentanyl,” ultimately leading to an 18-year-old’s fatal overdose, officials say. According to the Department of Justice, Gregory Hevener, 47, of Hawaiian Gardens was found guilty in June of one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and one count of possession with intent to distribute heroin. The DOJ says the investigation found that the 18-year-old, whose name was not released, responded to an ad placed by Hevener on the website OfferUp in November 2020.  The Long Beach-based listing advertised a message saying: “BLACK TAR ROOFING MATERIALS!!” – which the DOJ says is coded language for black tar heroin. “OfferUp records revealed Hevener operated or had access to several accounts on the platform, in which he advertised and distributed drugs, including heroin and fentanyl,” the DOJ stated in a release. The 18-year-old bought what he believed to be heroin from Hevener during a meet-up in Hawaiian Gardens. However, officials say Hevener instead gave the teen what was a black, tar-like

Nathan Hochman Set to Take Office as L.A. County District Attorney

Nathan Hochman, who campaigned on a “hard middle approach” to battling crime and scored a resounding victory over reform-minded incumbent George Gascón in last month’s election, is set to take the oath of office Tuesday as L.A. County’s 44th district attorney. The 61-year-old former federal prosecutor — who ran as an independent after seeking the state attorney general’s office as a Republican in 2022 — will be sworn in at noon in a ceremony outside the Hall of Justice, with former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger administering the oath. Hochman will carry what amounts to a mandate from L.A. County voters to get tougher on crime — with the latest numbers giving him more than 1.9 million votes, or just under 60%, compared to Gascón’s 1.3 million votes. Gascón conceded defeat on Nov. 6, one day after Election Day. Gascón was swept into office four years ago with a progressive platform — but he became a target of critics, including Hochman, who accused him of being soft on crime. Gascón defended his record while in office, denying allegations that his policies led to an increase in crime
