Breaking down the democratic sweep of the local state legislative races

On Election Day, the Republican Party saw a national win with Donald Trump elected as the 47th president of the United States, but on the Central Coast, the Democratic Party swept the state legislative races. The Central Coast spoke and it was overwhelmingly blue across six races, which included two U.S. representative seats, two state senate seats and two state assembly seats. To us, as a party, to represent our values and to defend our people in California, I think we can count on that in San Luis Obispo County. We can count on that. We can count on that in Sacramento as well, said Tom Fulks, Chairman of the San Luis Obispo County Democratic Party. All six winners were incumbents. Jimmy Panetta defeated Jason Anderson for the U.S. Representative District 19 seat. Salud Carbajal defeated Thomas Cole for the U.S. Representative District 24 seat. In the State Senate, John Laird defeated Tony Virrueta for District 17, while Monique Limon bested Elijah Mack for District 21. In the State Assembly, Dawn Addis won against Dalila Epperson for District 30, while Gregg Hart defeated Sari Domingues

Local elections offices still have tens of thousands of ballots left to count

San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties released their Unprocessed Ballots Reports for the Nov. 5 election on Thursday — a report required by the Secretary of State’s Office. In San Luis Obispo County, the Clerk-Recorder’s Office reported that 82,548 ballots have been processed so far, and they have an estimated 68,992 still to go. SLO County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano also reported on Thursday that there were an “unprecedented number” of provisional ballots cast during this election, “many by Cal Poly students voting for the first time or voting for the first time in SLO County.” Cano said that elections staff will be dedicating much of their time over the next few weeks to confirming these voters’ registration and eligibility. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, county elections officials have 30 days to verify voter signatures, count votes, conduct a post-election audit, and report results to the Secretary of State. The deadline for county elections officials to report their final results to the Secretary of State is December 5. San Luis Obispo County expects to update its election results by 5 p.m. on Friday

Cleary said the most significant action and growth happened in Branch 5 – the Somis and southern areas of South Mountain – on Thursday. Crews targeted Stockton, Waters and Brigsby roads as the fire hooked around and got established in the area with a northeast wind. Crews held a direct handline from Stockton Road to

How the eye-catching, maximalist costumes on ‘Elsbeth’ are used to disarm the unsuspecting

1 Given her fondness for hot pink outerwear, it is unlikely that Elsbeth Tascioni ( Carrie Preston ) has garments in her closet bearing any resemblance to Lt. Columbo’s iconic, well-worn beige raincoat. Still, Peter Falk’s formidable cigar-smoking detective serves as an inspiration for Elsbeth, with her intentionally disarming wardrobe, and how she outwits the murderer-of-the-week, played by a famous guest star. “We really want Elsbeth’s clothing to be the equivalent of Columbo’s trench coat,” says Daniel Lawson, “Elsbeth’s” costume designer. He designed the wardrobe for the lawyer-turned-investigator, from Preston’s first appearance on “The Good Wife” in 2010 through spinoff “The Good Fight” and now in the character’s titular turn. Lawson is attuned to the idiosyncratic character’s maximalist-leaning tastes and how suspects and cops view her. It is Columbo’s persistence and continued presence that Lawson taps into. “Even at the precinct, she comes around the corner, and some cops are like, ‘Oh, come on. Here she is again. Look at that jacket, look at those pants, look at that hat,’” Lawson says. “Her clothing is the Columbo trench coat — the idea of it —

When Huntington Beach, Calif., detectives searched Rodney Alcala’s Seattle storage locker during the murder investigation of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe in 1979, they discovered a cache of photos, many of them young women in suggestive, and even pornographic poses. In March 2010, after a third jury in 30 years handed Alcala a death sentence, Huntington Beach police released more than 100 of those photos hoping to identify the women and some children, and learn if Alcala claimed still more victims. Mountain fire fouls the air, forcing a wood-burning ban just as fall cooldown begins

Friday night’s predicted low temperature of 51 degrees in Los Angeles might tempt some to light a cozy fall fire. But residents in a large swath of Southern California should refrain from burning wood Friday — the destructive Mountain fire has thrown air pollutants into a frenzy, air quality officials said. Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties are required to stop burning wood, including manufactured logs made of wax or paper, anywhere indoors or outdoors from midnight through 11:59 p.m. Friday, the South Coast Air Quality Management District said Thursday. It is the first scheduled no-burn day of the 2024-25 season. (South Coast Air Quality Management District) Mountain communities above 3,000-feet elevation, the Coachella Valley and the high desert are exempt from the ban, along with homes that rely on wood as the sole source of heat, low-income households and those without natural gas service. Breathing in fine particles, such as those from burning wood, can cause respiratory problems, air quality officials said, including asthma attacks. Officials suggest staying inside, avoiding physical activity and running the AC or

Schoolteacher in Southern California charged with molesting student, 13, in car

A 43-year-old schoolteacher in Los Angeles has been arrested and charged with the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old student in her class and investigators believe there may be additional victims, authorities announced Thursday.   Colleen Jo Matarico, a resident of Valley Village, was arrested Nov. 7 in connection with the allegations, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.   “Matarico, a teacher, groomed and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old victim in her classroom, and later convinced the victim to have sexual intercourse in her vehicle,” investigators said.   Colleen Jo Matarico, 43, a resident of Valley Village. (LAPD) Officials did not provide any information on where Matarico teaches, but said after filing the case the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, she was charged with five counts of lewd acts with a minor, two counts of lewd acts with a minor 14 or 15 years old and one count of furnishing marijuana to a minor.   “Detectives believe there are additional, unidentified victims of Matarico who have yet to come forward,” the release noted. “A photograph of Matarico is being released to

Republican Young Kim reelected to Congress representing Orange County

Republican Rep. Young Kim, who in 2020 was one of the first Korean American women elected to Congress, fended off a challenge from Democrat Joe Kerr, a retired fire captain, to secure a third term representing inland Orange County in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Associated Press called the race in California’s 40th Congressional District on Thursday, though official results will take longer. Control of the House remained too close to call. Kim said in a statement Thursday night that she plans to “be an independent voice, bring common sense to Washington, and through bipartisanship, deliver results.” “There is so much to do to get our country back on track, and I am ready to get back to Washington and continue to fight on behalf of my community,” she said. The race for the 40th Congressional District, which covers some of the most conservative cities in Orange County and portions of Corona in Riverside County and Chino Hills in San Bernardino County, remained relatively under the radar for most of the election cycle. In past years, congressional Democrats’ campaign arm included the district on

Satellite photos show intense power, devastation of the Mountain fire Smoke rises over an area of Ventura County burning in the Mountain fire on Thursday. (Maxar) Fueled by critically low humidity levels and Santa Ana winds, the fast-moving Mountain fire swept through the hillside communities of Ventura County, scorching more than 20,000 acres by Thursday evening and threatening over 5,000 households, authorities said. Satellite imagery captured by NASA and Maxar Technologies showcases the fire’s fury as homes are reduced to rubble and a vast plume of smoke stretches into the atmosphere. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Ventura County to mobilize resources to combat the treacherous blaze. Times reporters in the area counted more than 90 homes destroyed by

Levi’s heir and political outsider Daniel Lurie wins San Francisco mayor’s race

SAN FRANCISCO —  Philanthropist and Levi’s heir Daniel Lurie has won the hard-fought race for San Francisco mayor, ushering in a new era of leadership for a city whose voters made clear they are fed up with brazen retail theft and sprawling tent cities. It took two days to determine a winner under San Francisco’s ranked-choice voting system, which allows voters to select multiple candidates by order of preference. The city uses a multiround process to count the ballots, and it can take several rounds of tallying before a winner receives more than 50% of the vote. Though thousands of votes remained uncounted Thursday evening, the gap of support between Lurie and his opponents was deemed too big to bridge. Lurie, a centrist Democrat, outpaced incumbent Mayor London Breed and three other prominent local Democrats, receiving 56.2% of the total ranked-choice vote compared with Breed’s 43.8% as of Thursday’s count. Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, the only leading candidate running as an old-school progressive, came in third after being eliminated from the running with 21.6% of first-choice votes, and venture capitalist Mark Farrell, a moderate

The murder took place on December 13, 2018, when Dominguez returned to a former neighborhood in Oxnard and confronted Gutierrez. Manuel Dominguez, 25, of Santa Maria is shown in this undated mugshot provided by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. After a brief verbal exchange, Dominguez shot Gutierrez in the chest from about 30 feet away, officials said. Gutierrez was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. “This sentence reflects the gravity of a senseless act that claimed an innocent life,” said Ventura County Senior Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Nguyen, who prosecuted the case. Dominguez was arrested on January 2, 2019, after an investigation by the Oxnard Police Department. He pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 20.
