REVIEW: Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘A Real Pain’ is a gentle punch to the gut

(NEXSTAR) — Jesse Eisenberg, who rose to fame in college-aged films like “Zombieland” and “The Social Network,” is now over 40 and questioning a lot things. At least that’s some of what’s at the center of his multi-layered and meditative sophomore directorial project, “A Real Pain.” The comedic drama, also written by Eisenberg, follows cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin, “Succession”), who reunite for a pilgrimage to their recently deceased grandmother’s pre-Holocaust home in Poland. The once-inseparable cousins have grown distant as life taken them in very different directions. Theatrical poster for “A Real Pain,” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Elwood Edwards, voice of the ‘You’ve got mail’ AOL email greeting, dies at 74

Elwood Edwards, a media multihyphenate who voiced AOL’s iconic greeting “You’ve got mail,” has died. Edwards died Tuesday at age 74 in New Bern, N.C., after a long illness, his former employer, Ohio NBC affiliate WKYC , confirmed. According to the television station, he died the day before his 75th birthday. During his decade-long stint at WKYC, Edwards worked as a “graphics guru, camera operator, and general jack-of-all-trades,” the station said, “yet it was a somewhat random opportunity in 1989 that earned him international fame.” That year, Edwards recorded the four short phrases — including “You’ve got mail” — that he had “a certain amount of trouble trying to escape” for the rest of his life, he joked in 2012 . Thirty years ago, Edwards’ wife, Karen, was working as a customer service representative at Quantum Computer Services, AOL’s predecessor company, when she overheard then-chief executive Steve Case say he needed a voiceover actor for a new project. “I had an idea. Why not make the service more personal by adding the voice of a person?” Case wrote in his 2016 book “The Third Wave:

Los Angeles man sentenced for BevMo! robbery spree of over $14K and freeway foot pursuit

A South Los Angeles man has been sentenced to over nine years for a 10-day long robbery spree that ended in a high-speed crash and freeway foot pursuit, officials announced Thursday. They also threatened employees with violence during the robberies, officials said. At the Long Beach BevMo! store, Flores stole around $2,604 worth of liquor, and at the Lakewood store, he escaped with around $800 worth of liquor. The crew then sold the stolen liquor to buyers on Instagram. The DOJ reports the group also conspired to rob other stores in West Covina and Pasadena, and on June 5, 2023, attempted to rob a BevMo! store in Canyon Country.  In the last robbery attempt, officials say Flores and co-defendant Ivin Kitu Sanford, 32, formerly of South Los Angeles but now a resident

EV maker Rivian falls short of revenue projections for third quarter

Electric vehicle maker Rivian missed Wall Street’s expectations for revenue on Thursday, with sales coming in lower than anticipated in the third quarter. The Irvine-based company reported revenue of $874 million in the three months ending Sept. 30., which fell short of the $992 million projected by analysts, according to FactSet. The company recorded revenue of $1.3 billion during the same period a year ago. In a shareholder letter, Rivian attributed the revenue drop to a production disruption and “a more challenging consumer environment.” Rivian faces several hurdles, including supply chain problems, safety issues and a slowing demand for electric vehicles from consumers worried about cost and convenient charging options. RJ Scaringe, the company’s founder and chief executive, said in a call with analysts that it’s been a “tough quarter” for Rivian because of the supply chain hiccups and fixing that has been at the top of the company’s priorities. “We’re working very, very hard to address that,” said Scaringe, adding that the company sees the challenge as a “short-term issue.” Automakers are also bracing for more uncertainty after Republican Donald Trump won the 2024

UCLA basketball could hit the big-time against New Mexico with larger lineup

Having revealed his small-ball starting lineup, UCLA basketball coach Mick Cronin soon will have a decision to make when he wants to go big. Does he go with the biggest guy on the team in Aday Mara, a 7-foot-3 sophomore whose intense offseason training should prevent all the huffing he did as a freshman? Or does he opt for William Kyle III, a 6-foot-9 junior transfer who is trying to take a giant step up in competition after spending the last two seasons at South Dakota State? That choice could come as soon as Friday evening when the Bruins face an opponent that started three players 6-foot-9 or taller. “I would anticipate us needing to play bigger against high-major teams like New Mexico,” Cronin said Thursday, referencing the game between the No. 22 Bruins (1-0) and Lobos (1-0) in the Las Vegas Hoopfest at Lee’s Family Forum in Henderson, Nev. Each big man has his selling points and drawbacks. Kyle provides the more athletic option and was the first player off the bench during the Bruins’ season-opening victory over Rider.
