Prosecutors Want 14 Years for Convicted Ex-Legal Heavyweight Tom Girardi

Prosecutors are asking that convicted former legal titan Tom Girardi be sentenced to 14 years behind bars for ripping off his injured clients, while defense attorneys argue that the disbarred lawyer is a “broke, half-blind, incontinent, 85-year-old man with dementia” who should be placed in a medical facility for the rest of his life, according to court papers obtained Sunday. Girardi, once ranked among the most successful and prominent lawyers in the country, is scheduled to be sentenced in downtown Los Angeles on Friday following convictions on four counts of wire fraud for stealing millions of dollars from clients and spending the money on private jets, golf club memberships, jewelry and the career of his now-estranged wife, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Erika Jayne. In sentencing papers, federal prosecutors write that Girardi should be ordered to pay almost $3.8 million in restitution along with the prison sentence for perpetrating “a cunning fraud scheme against the injured clients he had a sworn duty to protect.” Girardi’s “yearslong theft of client funds from his law firm’s trust accounts and the myriad lies he told to cover

The New York Yankees reportedly offered Soto $760 million over 16 years. The Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers were also reportedly interested in signing the 26-year-old Soto, the best free agent hitter on the market and considered by many a generational talent. Chargers are beaten down by Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes again, this time on last drive

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  The Chargers know this all too well. Patrick Mahomes leading a game-winning, clock-bleeding drive. The Kansas City Chiefs kicked a game-winning field goal off the upright to clinch their ninth consecutive AFC West title with a 19-17 win Sunday as the Chargers (8-5) lost their seventh consecutive game to their divisional rival. Six of the wins have come by a single possession, including both of the losses this season, and the Chargers now have lost 11 consecutive games decided by three or fewer points. When Matthew Wright’s 31-yard field goal bounced off the left upright and through the goal posts as time expired, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh could only stare blankly in front of him with his mouth hanging open. “This one hurts,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll lay down and bleed for a little while. Not long. Then we’ll rise and try again.” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh tried to show calm after a road loss to the Chiefs. (Ed Zurga / Associated Press) Escaping with 10 wins by one possession this season, the Chiefs (12-1) appeared vulnerable for an upset Sunday. The Chargers

Column: It may be set in a small town, but ‘Somebody Somewhere’ was epic television

Not every epic hero has to travel from Troy to Ithaca, across Middle-earth or Westeros, or along the Yellow Brick Road to battle monsters, forge unlikely friendships, discover hidden powers and vanquish the shadow that threatens to engulf their world. Sometimes, as Dorothy Gale discovered all those years ago, a hero can do all that without ever leaving Kansas. In “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller — another woman who understands the importance of a really big song — does it without even getting a hallucination-inducing knock on the head. For Emmy purposes, the HBO series, which ended Sunday after three seasons, is considered a comedy. And certainly the half-hour show, created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring the bawdy comedian/cabaret star Bridget Everett as Sam, can be funny as hell. But like many modern comedies, most recently and famously “The Bear,” “Somebody Somewhere” is equally driven by pathos. Indeed, the series shares certain themes with “The Bear”: the devastation of parental alcoholism, the twisted relationship between talent and self-doubt. (In this part of the Midwest, though, ambitions are smaller, clashes far less operatic. Here

Dodgers miss on Juan Soto, but add outfield depth by signing Michael Conforto

On the eve of MLB’s Winter Meetings, two left-handed-hitting outfielders found new homes on the free agent market. One was the biggest name in the sport this winter, with superstar slugger Juan Soto reportedly agreeing to a staggering 15-year, $765-million contract with the New York Mets, setting a new MLB record. The other flew under the radar everywhere but Los Angeles, with the Dodgers agreeing to a one-year, $17-million contract with veteran Michael Conforto pending a physical, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly. Although the Dodgers had been considered one of the finalists for Soto — they met with the four-time All-Star last month and were one of five teams believed to be engaged in his record-setting bidding — the likelihood was always that another team, especially the Mets with their billionaire owner, Steve Cohen, would blow well past anything the Dodgers were willing to spend. So, as Soto’s Mets deal shattered Shohei Ohtani’s previous record total of $700 million (without any of the deferrals Ohtani agreed to with the Dodgers), the Dodgers shifted their focus elsewhere

Woman, 52, accused of robbing Billie Eilish fans at knifepoint near Oregon arena

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Pop star Billie Eilish won’t take the stage at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, until Sunday night, but that didn’t stop fans from camping outside the venue days in advance, all in the hopes of snatching a good spot for general admission seats. Among those were Jessica Bailey and some of her family members. The exciting and anticipatory experience quickly took a turn for the worse Saturday morning when Bailey and her mother say they had their belongings stolen at knifepoint by a woman who is now accused of stabbing someone else nearby. Speaking with Nexstar’s KOIN, Bailey explained that a woman, since identified by police as Angelique Butler, approached them and began telling them they had to clear out of the area. The woman filed a complaint against the streaming giant in Marion County Superior Court back in 2022, alleging she was exposed without her consent as one of Cline’s secret children in the Netflix documentary, “Our Father.” Per the original complaint, the woman’s photo and name appeared in the film. Her attorneys claimed the documentary’s producers promised anonymity to Cline’s secret children who did not want to be identified during the film. The woman’s attorneys also alleged that the photographs and names of several other secret children were blurred in the documentary, but she was not given those same protections. ‘Particularly Dangerous Situation’: Red Flag Warning issued for parts of Southern California

Dangerous fire weather in this week’s forecast prompted Red Flag Warnings for parts of Southern California, issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday. The warning, which NWS labeled as a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS), will be in place from Monday night through Wednesday as “a strong, widespread, and long duration Santa Ana event will bring widespread critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions to many areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.” Los Angeles County Fire officials say the department is beefing up its staff, it is pre-positioning trucks with water tanks in the event that they have to get to a rural area without hydrants, and they’re advising people to take precautions themselves. For example, officials say it’s a good idea to preemptively clear brush away from your home and get your things ready just in case of an evacuation. “This event has the potential to be as strong as the November 5-6 Santa Ana event that led to the Mountain Fire,” a NWS release warns. “Prepare for fire weather by ensuring you have defensible space and creating a plan in case of

Jay-Z denies anonymous court accusation that he raped girl in 2000

Hip-hop megastar Jay-Z has emphatically denied accusations in a lawsuit that he and fellow entertainer Sean “Diddy” Combs raped a 13-year-old girl more than two decades ago. The complaint was amended Sunday in U.S. District Court in New York to add Jay-Z as a defendant after originally being filed against Combs in October. It alleges they “took turns assaulting the minor” at a party after the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. In a statement issued Sunday by Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, he assailed Tony Buzbee, the attorney for the anonymous accuser. “These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!” the statement said. “Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?” The statement called the lawsuit’s claims “idiotic” and something that would be laughable “if not for the seriousness surrounding harm to kids.” “You have made a terrible error in judgment in thinking that all ‘celebrities are the same,’” the statement said. “I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made

USC will face Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 27, with Lincoln Riley trying to avoid his first losing season in his eight-season head coaching career, organizers announced Sunday. The Trojans (6-6) will be playing in the Las Vegas Bowl for the third time. Jay-Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs accused of raping 13-year-old in civil suit

Rappers Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs have been accused in a civil lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl back in 2000. The lawsuit, which was originally filed in October and re-filed Sunday in New York to add Jay-Z to the list of defendants, alleges that the victim, identified only as a woman now living in Alabama, was raped by both men at a Video Music Awards afterparty. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, referred to the allegations in a statement as a “blackmail attempt.” Combs’ attorney denied the allegations. The lawsuit alleges the girl went to the VMAs in New York City without a ticket hoping to get inside, but was instead invited to an afterparty by a limo driver who claimed to work for Combs. The limo driver allegedly drove her to the party, where she was told to sign something that she believes was a non-disclosure agreement, the lawsuit claims.  While inside, the lawsuit alleges, “after attempting to talk to numerous celebrities, Plaintiff accepted a drink from one of the waitresses circulating the crowd.” The lawsuit claims she began to feel “woozy

Dylan Andrews’ last-second basket leads UCLA to victory over undefeated Oregon

(Thomas Boyd / Associated Press) Dec. 8, 2024 5:32 PM PT EUGENE, Ore. —  It was UCLA-Oregon, so weird things were bound to happen. Into a rivalry that once saw Bruins guard Bryce Alford, one of the nation’s leading free-throw shooters, miss a late foul shot in a loss and UCLA come back from nine points down in the final 51 seconds to win came more unusual things Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena. Leading by seven points with a little more than three minutes to play, the Bruins unraveled, falling behind by a point on Jackson Shelstad’s three-pointer with 10.7 seconds left. Then came more madness. UCLA’s Dylan Andrews nearly stumbled after taking a pass before rising for a three-pointer that he banked in with four-tenths of a second left. After UCLA’s Eric Dailey Jr. tipped away the full-court inbounds pass, the Bruins could celebrate a 73-71 triumph that gave No. 12 Oregon its first loss of the season. Dailey scored 19 points on seven-for-eight shooting and Kobe Johnson added 11 points for the Bruins (8-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) in their seventh consecutive victory.

Rams make a statement by scoring 44 points to beat AFC powerhouse Bills

So maybe this Rams team is better than average. Perhaps coach Sean McVay finally has them on track to win the NFC West. And, dare we posit it: A deep playoff run? It’s all out there for the Rams, who went from marginal-all-season to mostly magnificent for a day with a 44-42 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in front of 73,493 at SoFi Stadium. Running back Kyren Williams and receiver Puka Nacua each scored two touchdowns, Matthew Stafford passed for 320 yards, and special teams came up big as the Rams improved to 7-6. “Players did the damn thing,” coach Sean McVay said proudly. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times) It is the first time this season that the Rams have been above .500, and they did it by holding on to defeat one of the best teams in the NFL. Consider: The Bills went into the game with a 10-2 record and riding a seven-game winning streak. They had scored 30 points or more in six straight games. They were fresh off clinching a fifth consecutive AFC East title and in contention
