Police arrest 3 suspects in rural Monterey County shooting that killed 4 and wounded 7

KING CITY — Three suspects have been arrested in connection with a March shooting by masked men at a party in rural central California that killed four people and left seven others wounded, officials said Friday. The three people were arrested on multiple gang-related charges and included one juvenile, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said Friday. They face four counts of murder, four counts of criminal conspiracy to commit murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Officials said a group of men in masks got out of a car and opened fire at an outdoor party in King’s City, a community of about 14,000 in southern Salinas Valley farm country, and then sped off. Police declined to state whether they had identified a motive or provide other details about what happened, saying the investigation is ongoing.

At one Gilroy middle school, students teach each other. Is this new model the future of education?

In Gilroy Prep’s eighth-grade math class, there are no quiet rows of orderly desks facing an instructor. Instead, the room feels less like a classroom and more like the floor of a stock exchange, with the constant buzz of conversation as students sketch slopes and equations on tablets that project their stylus strokes onto nearby screens. All the while, a trio of clipboard-wielding students circulate among their classmates — huddled in groups of three on the periphery of the room — asking questions, gesturing at the screens and explaining algebraic concepts. Gilroy Prep is one of a small cohort of schools in the country experimenting with this method known as the Squads model — students in grades sixth through eighth educating each other under the purview of a teacher. Student teacher Paige Lott helps classmates in an 8th grade math class at Gilroy Prep in Gilroy, Calif., Thursday, May 2, 2024. Under the supervision of instructors, student teachers help their classmates at the charter school grasp their STEM and language arts studies. Bridge: May 13, 2024

I found Cy the Cynic, a chauvinist, and Wendy, my club’s feminist, arguing about wedding plans. The battle lines were drawn: Wendy favored long engagements; Cy was opposed to marriage. “Engagements,” Cy sniffed. “Showers for the bride, curtains for the groom.” Later, the two were North-South in a penny game. Cy doubled West’s preemptive three diamonds, and when Wendy bid three spades, Cy raised. West led a diamond, and Wendy surveyed the Cynic’s dummy with less than her usual distaste. “I’ll show him what a good woman can do,” she whispered to me. She took the ace of diamonds and led dummy’s queen of spades. LOUD CRASH East reflexively covered with the king, and there was a loud crash. Wendy later led a second trump toward her ten, losing two trumps and a heart. Wendy gave herself the only chance. She placed East with only two hearts — West would have led a singleton — so East had three trumps. “A woman,” Wendy told Cy, “wouldn’t cover the queen.” DAILY QUESTION You hold: S Q 7 4 3 H A Q J 6 D A

Ask Amy: I don’t mind her investigation, but did she have to spill her findings like that?

Dear Amy: In 1964, I met my wife “Laura” and her infant baby “Beth.” (Laura had gotten pregnant with a married man.) Laura and I were married, and I adopted Beth when she was 1 year old. We raised Beth as my daughter and never heard a word from her biological father. We told Beth about her adoption when she was 8. Her mother invited her to ask questions, but Beth didn’t want to talk about it. We had a very loving family and never had one problem. I always considered Beth to be my own child. My wife recently died from breast cancer. Beth did a DNA test after my wife died and discovered that she has many biological relatives. Though her biological father died a few years ago, Beth contacted other members of her biological family. She then went on social networks announcing her newfound relatives. It has hurt me. I can understand her inquiry, but I am upset with her use of social media to announce the results. Many of my friends never knew that Beth was my adoptive daughter. Am I

Ex-Stanford golfer says tournament ‘reignited my passion for the game’

CLIFTON, N.J. — Great things have been expected from Rose Zhang from the moment the two-time NCAA champion won in her professional debut last year and joined the LPGA Tour the following week. The 20-year-old finally delivered again Sunday, birdieing four of the final five holes to win the Cognizant Founders Cup. She beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes while putting an official end to Nelly Korda’s record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak. “I was able to grow so much throughout the journey in this past year,” Zhang said. “I don’t know, it’s crazy to come out here. Didn’t have any expectation of having to win because I realize that it’s all just noise and I really just have to be able to work at it myself and try my best to put myself in positions like this. “But no matter what happened this week, I would’ve been very satisfied, and it reignited my passion for the game once again,” she added after winning on Mother’s Day. Zhang, who was talking to her mom coming into the media room, actually had a funny start to her

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ reigns at the box office with $56.5 million opening

By Andrew Dalton | Associated Press LOS ANGELES — “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” reigned over the weekend box office with a $56.5 million North American opening, according to studio estimates Sunday, giving a needed surge to an uncertain season in theaters. The film from 20th Century Studios and Disney that built on the rebooted “Apes” trilogy of the 2010s had the third highest opening of the year, after the $81.5 million debut of “Dune: Part Two” in early March and the $58.3 million domestic opening of “Kung Fu Panda 4” a week later. The strong performance for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” — it played even better internationally with a global total of $129 million — comes a week after a tepid start for Ryan Gosling’s “The Fall Guy” signaled that the summer of 2024 is likely to see a major drop-off after the “Barbenheimer” magic of 2023. “Planet of the Apes” easily made more than the rest of the top 10 combined. “The Fall Guy” fell to No. 2 with a $13.7 million weekend and a two-week total of

Bay FC loses to league-leading Orlando for fifth straight defeat

Bay FC dropped its fifth straight game in a 1-0 loss to the Orlando Pride on Saturday night, the first shutout loss in team history. The match’s only goal was a 32nd-minute penalty kick from Pride forward Adriana, who deposited the ball in the left corner behind Bay keeper Katelyn Rowland. Bay FC registered just two shots on net, compared to 10 for the Pride. Rowland made a career-high nine saves in defeat. Barbra Banda drew the penalty by cutting into the box from the left side midway through the first half. Deyna Castellanos attempted a slide tackle and fouled Banda. Despite another loss, Bay FC coach Alberto Montoya was positive about his team’s response after halftime. “In the first half, we were not at our best, but we could have gone the other way and instead we created problems for them in the second half and we had some half chances here and there,” he said after the loss. “The mentality and the attitude and how much more aggressive we were, a lot of credit to the team.” Bay FC dropped to 2-7-0 on

WCC expansion: What Grand Canyon and Seattle mean for the conference — and what they say about Gonzaga’s future

The process took longer than necessary — years longer, in fact — but the West Coast Conference presidents finally recognized what their peers in the Pac-12 failed to see: The forces of conference realignment value heft and reward strength in numbers. Size and security move in lockstep. On Friday, the West Coast Conference announced Seattle and Grand Canyon will join the league in the summer of 2025, boosting the number of permanent members to 11. The additions provide short-term strength and long-haul security in case of future attrition — in case Gonzaga, the WCC’s version of USC, departs for another conference. Had the Pac-12 approved expansion in the summer of 2021, after Texas and Oklahoma announced they were leaving the Big 12 to join the SEC, the century-old conference would still exist in viable form. Instead, the presidents took a narrow view and held with 12. Two years later, kaboom! The WCC learned from its neighbor’s mistake. “The addition of Grand Canyon University and Seattle University bolsters the membership, enhances the profile of competitive excellence and expands the conference footprint into two major cities in

New study is optimistic about increasing EV fuel economy

There is now widespread agreement that our ability to electrify road transportation offers an enormous opportunity to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A joint study by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Natural Resources Defense Council goes on to argue that the benefits of electrification could be increased significantly by maximizing the fuel economy of the emerging electric fleet. The researchers predict that efficiency optimization “could effectively cut energy consumption per mile in half over the next 30 years.” The study attempts to quantify the main benefits that could be secured if a steady transition away from internal combustion vehicles was paired with a deliberate effort to maximize electric fuel economy. Dramatic improvements in EV efficiency could theoretically be achieved in a number of ways, according to the study. The main strategies include boosting powertrain efficiency, reducing aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance, improving the efficiency of auxiliary equipment used to heat and cool the cabin, and reducing vehicle mass. The authors believe that notable weight reduction could be accomplished without resorting to vehicle downsizing or compromising safety. Their analysis suggests that total

Child pulled from water at Bethel Island

A local responder pulled a 5-year-old boy out of the water who was drowning off Bethel Island and took him to a hospital on Saturday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said. Firefighters were called at about 4:45 p.m. to a report of a missing child in the 400 block of Halcyon Place on Bethel Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. A rescue swimmer found the boy submerged in a cove at about 5:10 p.m., said Capt. Joe Ottolini, a spokesperson for the district. The child received CPR and was taken to a hospital. Ottolini said he didn’t know the boy’s status. The boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island. Ottolini said circumstances of the drowning weren’t clear because of language differences.

Italy’s driving craze: odd names, high speeds

NAPLES, Italy — Occasionally, a Ferrari or another elite supercar that made the country’s automotive industry famous, maneuver along small roads. But they’re outliers, open-road machines glorified in movies and showcased by snooty auction houses. Little cars, some familiar but with unfamiliar names reign in the nation’s maze of constant congestion and ego-driven driving. Narrow, often cobblestoned streets are the canvas for the pedestrian-versus-driver turf conflicts. Who goes first and why is it hard to determine. It’s a skill honed more by instantaneous visual assertiveness rather than emotional outbursts. For automotive enthusiasts, observing the vast array of scooters, new and old petite vehicles from Fiat and the small transport vehicles, the Ape Calessino made by Piaggio, can supersede the frustration of the prevailing illogical driving habits. The three-wheelers are everywhere. They’re lined up as taxis for tourists, some open air, others covered and customized with elaborate decorations or artwork-style paint jobs. They’re far more compelling than taxis and don’t advance quickly in the rest of the rush of motor vehicles. Still, determining what kinds of cars pass by within inches or parking in any way

Domaine Eden opens for appointment tasting in Saratoga

It’s been two decades since the property now called Domaine Eden was open to the public in any capacity. The site of the original Cinnabar winery and estate vineyard property, established by Tom Mudd, went on the market in 2004 and sat until 2007, when it was purchased by Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson of Mount Eden Vineyards. They called it Domaine Eden. Less than two miles from their world-famous Mount Eden vineyard, originally planted by Martin Ray, the soils and views could not be more different. Mount Eden faces southeast and is mostly above the fog line.  “The soils are rocky and poor,” says Mount Eden winemaker Jeffrey Patterson. “At Domaine Eden, the vineyards are north facing, so it is cooler and the soil is like potting mix—dark and loose—with no rocks. It is night and day different.” Now wine lovers can experience Domaine Eden for themselves, and taste wines from both properties. Starting Saturday, May 11, Domaine Eden opened to the public by reservation only for weekend wine tasting on the outdoor patio. A variety of curated flights, glasses and bottles from both Domaine

Los Gatos resident’s new bookstore goes Beyond Text

Tanya Sedneva was a shy kid who always had her nose stuck in a book. The Los Gatos resident’s longtime love for books fueled a childhood dream of opening her own bookstore, a dream that Sedneva eventually forgot about as she got caught up in the day-to-day routine of adult life. When she got laid off from her project managing job at a tech company last year, she found herself returning to those childhood goals. She recently opened Beyond Text, an independent bookstore located at 218 North Santa Cruz Ave. in downtown Los Gatos.Sedneva said the store will offer books from a variety of genres in addition to gifts, board games and home decor. Sedneva said she gave special attention to stocking novelty, illustrated versions of popular books to emphasize the physical experience of reading a book. “How can someone read anything boring when such amazing editions exist?” Sedneva wrote in a caption for an Instagram post of a novelty edition of “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien. “I tried to pick their most beautiful editions, illustrated editions, not only for kids but also for adults,”
