Trump taps South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to helm Homeland Security

In a move that further signals Donald Trump’s commitment to enforce stringent controls on illegal immigration, the president-elect confirmed Tuesday he planned to appoint South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Trump has already signaled he will tap Stephen Miller and Tom Homan, two longtime allies with a track record of pushing for mass deportations and extreme clampdowns on immigrants, to serve senior roles as deputy chief of staff for policy and “border czar.” Noem, 52, a Trump loyalist who has offered firm backing for the GOP leader’s promise to carry out mass deportations, will preside over a vast department that oversees multiple agencies, including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The department has more than 260,000 employees and a $60-billion budget. After Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, Noem was asked how a Trump administration would carry out his plan to deport millions of immigrants who entered the country illegally. “It is going to be a big operation,” Noem told NewsNation. “President Trump has already indicated that he

Roy Haynes, pioneering jazz drummer and versatile band leader, dies at 99

Roy Haynes, a jazz drummer and band leader whose skill and versatility led to performances with such diverse artists as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny over the course of his seven-decade career, has died. A representative for Haynes confirmed to The Times that the prolific percussionist died Tuesday. His daughter, Leslie Haynes-Gilmore, told the New York Times her father died after a brief illness. He was 99. Haynes’ far-reaching résumé boasted expertise in most of the stylistic areas of jazz history. Called upon to play New Orleans music, swing, bebop, avant-garde, fusion, modal jazz, jazz rock, acid-jazz and more, he responded with extraordinary skill and imagination. “One can hear the essences of all of those bandstands, concert jobs, dances, parties and jam sessions in the freedom of his beat and command of tempo,” critic Stanley Crouch, a drummer himself, wrote for the online magazine Slate. “Haynes,” he added, “has no date on the way he plays. It is and always was contemporary.” Haynes’ remarkable longevity as a performer was underscored over the decades whenever he played at New York City’s venerable

Mateen Bhaghani kicking his way into UCLA’s football record book

DeShaun Foster acknowledged that both of the game balls he’s been given this season to commemorate coaching firsts could have gone to someone equally worthy. His kicker. That’s how valuable Mateen Bhaghani has been in his first season at UCLA. The transfer from California made a game-winner against Hawaii that represented Foster’s first coaching victory (earning him a game ball from athletic director Martin Jarmond ) and converted a career-long 57-yarder against Iowa last Friday to help give Foster his first home victory (and a second game ball from his boss). “I’m glad we got him from that other school up the road,” Foster said Tuesday. Bhaghani’s consistency in making 14 of 17 field-goal attempts this season has done more than put the sophomore in the conversation to join Norm Johnson, John Lee, Chris Sailer, Justin Medlock and Ka’imi Fairbairn as one of the Bruins’ all-time great kickers; it has also earned him the nickname “Money Bhags” from special teams coordinator Kodi Whitfield. “Super cool,” Bhaghani said. “I’ve been enjoying it.” Bhaghani’s 57-yarder topped the 54-yarder he made earlier this season against Oregon and was

As Tulsa police seeks to build trust, critics want accountability

Tulsa police tries to build trust with community Tulsa Police Department tries to build trust with community 03:47 Sheeba Atiqi’s is on a goodwill tour, and while it may look easy, it’s anything but. As a civilian ambassador for the Tulsa Police Department, her goal is to thaw relations with an often standoffish community. “People are afraid to approach them, afraid to ask them questions,” Atiqi said. “My job as a police ambassador is basically to be the liaison between the department and the community members.” It can be challenging, Atiqi says, because people may be “afraid due to their own background to engage with officers.” Tulsa is proud of its history as the center of the oil industry, but the city also grapples with ghosts — especially the aftermath of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, when local police assisted a rampaging white mob, leading to dozens, if not more, being killed and a Black neighborhood of nearly forty square blocks being incinerated. So the distrust that Tulsa police face runs deep and spans generations. “If you don’t learn from history, you’re doomed to repeat

Dodgers icon Fernando Valenzuela cause of death revealed

It was just last month when 63-year-old Fernando Valenzuela, the beloved Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher who sparked Fernandomania, died from a mysterious illness. A newly published copy of his death certificate dispels much of the mystery: According to that document, Valenzuela’s underlying cause of death was possibly related to a liver disease and liver failure. The certificate, first reported by TMZ, listed septic shock, decompensated alcoholic cirrhosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis as underlying causes. The certificate also suggest that Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease may also have contributed to his death. A rare and lethal brain disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob causes changes in brain tissue and affects muscle coordination and memory, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The latest details come three weeks after Valenzuela’s death and days after a public funeral Mass was held for him at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. Since his death on Oct. 22, Dodgers fans have been celebrating the life of the legendary pitcher who meant so much to Angelenos, especially in the Latino community. An informal memorial was created outside Dodger Stadium

JPL to lay off roughly 5% of its workforce

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is preparing to lay off hundreds of employees this week, director Laurie Leshin said in a memo to staff sent Tuesday afternoon. The La Cañada Flintridge research institution will let go of approximately 325 employees across the organization on Wednesday, or roughly 5% of its total staff, the memo stated. “With lower budgets and based on the forecasted work ahead, we had to tighten our belts across the board,” Leshin wrote. “This is a message I had hoped not to have to write.” This is the third round of layoffs at JPL this year, a reduction spurred primarily by major budgetary cuts to the Mars Sample Return mission, which is managed by JPL. NASA directed $310 million this year to the effort to bring Mars rocks back to Earth, a steep drop from the $822.3 million it spent on the program the previous year. In January, 100 on-site contractors at JPL were let go after NASA instructed the lab to reduce spending in anticipation of a much tighter budget. In February, the lab laid off 530 employees — approximately 8% of

Thousands of Glendale Unified students ordered to shelter-in-place due to wayward bear cub

When the ranger’s away, the bear cub will play — and the kids will stay locked in school. At least that’s what happened Tuesday in La Crescenta, where multiple law enforcement and wildlife personnel spent the afternoon monitoring a bear cub hanging out in a tree in front of Crescenta Valley High School, powerless to compel the creature to go home. As authorities determined what to do, Glendale Unified School District officials ordered the high school and nearby La Crescenta Elementary to shelter in place. “We want to stress that things are OK, and the situation is actively being monitored,” said district spokesperson Kristine Nam. Classes continued as scheduled on each campus, though students were not allowed to go outside, Nam said. The school issued the shelter-in-place order from 10 a.m. to shortly after noon and then again at 1 p.m. Though the district occasionally sends out warnings about bears and mountain lions, this is the first time Nam said she had seen a bear-induced shelter-in-place order since she joined the district nine years ago. One parent of an elementary school student confirmed to The

Mammoth gets 5 inches of fresh snow days before ski season opens

With just three days until opening day, Mammoth Mountain received 5 inches of fresh snowfall Monday night, helping fill in the slopes ahead of the ski resort’s 71st season kickoff Friday. Video shared by the resort shows snowmaking machines working late into the night, complementing the natural snowfall to make sure opening day offers prime conditions for eager skiers and snowboarders. Resorts like Mammoth use specialized machines that spray a fine mist of water into the air, which freezes before hitting the ground, creating an artificial snowpack. These machines are often used during overnight hours when temperatures are low enough to maintain snow production. (Dylan Hall, Mammoth Mountain) With more snow in the forecast and low overnight temperatures, Mammoth’s opening day is shaping up to be an exciting start to the season, officials said. Lifts expected to open on Friday include the Lower Panorama Gondola, Face Lift Express and Unbound Express. Trails set to open include Broadway, Saddle Bowl, Silver Tip and Rusty’s. The Upper

He owed an O.C. couple $80K, so he allegedly executed them and burned their bodies in the desert

A 30-year-old Glendale man has been accused of the horrifying killings of an Orange County couple in which he allegedly executed them and later burned their bodies in the Southern California desert, prosecutors say. Huangting Gong was charged with two felony counts of murder, one felony count of kidnapping, two felony counts of arson of property and two felony counts of first degree burglary in connection with the slayings, and could face the death penalty if convicted. According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the Brea Police Department was contacted on Oct. 15 by a person who claimed to have not heard from their family member, 37-year-old Kuanlun Wang in several days, which was unusual. During that initial contact, the family member told authorities that Wang claimed that Gong, a business associate, owed him $80,000. That family member said they contacted Gong three days prior, on Oct. 12. Gong told the family member that Wang and his wife, 37-year-old Jing Li, failed to show up to a meeting in New York City in which another business associate was supposed to pay Wang the money.

In a historic shift, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors will nearly double in size

Proponents of expanding the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors tried in 1962, in 1976, in 1992 and again in 2000. Each time, voters said no, even as the county’s population swelled. The last thing people wanted, it seemed, was more politicians. Now, in a historic shift, a proposal to add four more members to the five-member board as part of a massive overhaul of the county government’s structure has passed. The backers of Measure G claimed victory Monday afternoon following days of returns showing voters closely divided. The measure, which also includes a proposal to elect a chief executive and create an independent ethics commission, had a narrow but stable lead, securing just over 51% of votes, with some ballots still left to be counted. “The way we’re doing county governance right now just doesn’t work,” said Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who co-authored the measure with Supervisor Janice Hahn. “I’m heartened by what this change reflects.” Voters have repeatedly rejected ballot measures aimed at expanding the Board of Supervisors, currently an all-female board nicknamed the “five little queens” for the immense power they hold over

Rare ‘haboob’ dust storm brings Central Valley to a halt

A rare dust storm caused a multi-vehicle pileup and shut off power to Central Valley residents Monday. The so-called ‘haboob’ swept through the valley on Monday afternoon from about 1:30 to 4 p.m., said Emily Wilson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service at Hanford. Several people were injured in an accident on California 99, and Pacific Gas & Electric reported outages for about 15,000 Fresno county residents as abnormally high winds kicked dust up into a menacing cloud. “It was unusually dry for several months,” Wilson said, adding that a low pressure system “picked up all that dust and carried it across the entire valley.” In Madera, officials recorded a gust of 49 mph, which is unusual for a Central Valley location, Wilson said. The video below, from UC San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia, shows the dust storm engulfing a camera east of Delano. The university’s Garces Highway camera is located east of Delano, and its Schill Hill camera is in the foothills northeast of Bakersfield. The weather service staff were able to see the haboob with their own eyes, a “distinct wall of dust” that
