Colby Rubin discusses his father’s impact on his life

Sam Rubin was KTLA’s family man.  He was known for combining his private and public lives together on the air – many times including his children in the fun – giving viewers a unique look inside the home life of one of KTLA’s most iconic reporters.  Sam’s four children – Rory, Perry, Darcy and Colby – were his pride and joy; his role as father was the only thing more important to him than his role as Los Angeles’ leading entertainment correspondent.  His children also loved him very dearly, as evidenced by his 16-year-old son Colby’s appearance on the KTLA 5 Morning News on Monday, where he stoically honored his father’s legacy on his life and countless other lives across Los Angeles and the world.  “The outpouring [of support] has been tremendous,” Colby said. “And people I didn’t even know are reaching out…I was on a trip with my dad and people from that trip from a different country were like ‘We’re so sorry,’ so it’s like a reunion.”  Never-before-seen Sam Rubin interview shows what made him and KTLA so successful With strength that the

Getty Images Home equity borrowing has become an increasingly popular option in recent years, and there are a few good reasons for it. For starters, the current rate environment has caused rates on personal loans and credit cards to be elevated, but because borrowing against your home equity means using your home as collateral, home equity loan interest rates are typically much lower comparatively. And, home values have continued to soar in most markets. While the average homeowner had about $182,000 on average at the start of the pandemic, homeowners have an average of about $299,000 in home equity today .  To access their home equity , homeowners in today’s market generally opt for either a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit (HELOC)

D.A. removes Rebecca Grossman’s prosecutors, outraging parents of murdered boys

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has taken the highly unusual step of removing the prosecutors who convicted Rebecca Grossman of double murder, outraging the parents of the two young boys she killed in a Westlake Village crosswalk. Dist. Atty. George Gascón’s office replaced prosecutors Jamie Castro, Ryan Gould and their supervisor, Garrett Dameron, after they began preparing a motion to remove Grossman’s new attorney, James Spertus, because of a conflict of interest, according to an email by one of the prosecutors to his bosses. Spertus also represents Asst. Dist. Atty. Diana Teran, a top advisor to Gascón recently charged with 11 felonies in connection with the illegal use of confidential sheriff’s records. Spertus has denied any wrongdoing by Teran. The prosecutors’ removal comes at a potentially vital moment in the Grossman case as Spertus preps a motion for a new trial, which has delayed sentencing for the wealthy Grossman Burn Center co-founder until at least next month. Grossman has been awaiting sentencing since her Feb. 23 conviction of second-degree murder in the deaths of brothers Mark and Jacob Iskander, 11 and 8, who

Supreme Court denies California’s plea for immunity for COVID-19 deaths at San Quentin

WASHINGTON —  The Supreme Court on Monday turned down an appeal from California prison officials who sought immunity from lawsuits for having transferred inmates with COVID-19 to San Quentin in May 2020, setting off an outbreak that killed 26 prisoners and one guard. The justices denied the appeals with no comment or dissent. The transfer decision was later lambasted by state lawmakers as a “fiasco,” “abhorrent” and “the worst prison health screw-up in state history.” The California Institution for Men in Chino had been hit hard by COVID-19. Nine of its inmates had died and about 600 were infected in May 2020. San Quentin then had no known cases at that time. In an effort to prevent further harm at CIM, prison officials decided to move 122 inmates from Chino north to San Quentin. Within days, San Quentin reported 25 COVID cases among the 122 new arrivals. Within three weeks, the virus spread to 499 others. By early September, at least 2,100 inmates and 270 staff had tested positive. The state now faces four major lawsuits from the families of those who died as well as

Bronny James medically cleared for combine, paving way for possible NBA draft entry

(Ryan Sun / Associated Press) May 13, 2024 7:01 AM PT CHICAGO —  Bronny James has been cleared by NBA doctors to participate in the league’s draft combine, sources not authorized to speak publicly about the matter confirmed to The Times. James, who played at USC last season, suffered sudden cardiac arrest prior to his freshman year. A former McDonald’s All-American who starred at Sierra Canyon, James returned to play on Dec. 10 after suffering the heart issue during a workout on USC’s campus on July 24. He was eventually diagnosed with a congenital heart defect In 25 games with USC, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. The Athletic reported James intends to stay in the draft. Despite the modest statistics, James could get selected in the second round of the draft because some scouts like his defense and IQ. His father, the Lakers’ LeBron James, can become an unrestricted free agent. And while he spoke in the past about a desire to play with his son in the NBA, LeBron James has walked that back publicly, saying he wants his son to

With a new jewelry line, Aleali May is designing mini monuments to the self

Aleali May loves an Easter egg. And at Paris Fashion Week last year, it was unmissable: a giant, gleaming butterfly hanging above her solar plexus at the Louis Vuitton men’s show by Pharrell Williams. A butterfly is known for its transformative qualities, is symbolic for its hero’s journey — starting as one thing and going through pain and darkness to come out the other side something bigger and more beautiful. The piece is part of a collection, which May designed as the first drop from lab-grown diamond company GRWN, called Metamorphosis. “[It’s] me evolving in the space of jewelry, and me just evolving, honestly,” the creative director and designer says. “This is a moment.” An obvious centerpiece of the Metamorphosis collection is a choker with a line of three large butterflies dropping down toward the belly button, the last and largest being the size of a child’s hand and positioned at an angle — every inch of the piece decked out in lab-grown diamonds. There is also a smaller necklace that is no less ornate or extravagant: a large butterfly hanging at the tip of

Canadian town bracing for out-of-control wildfire

By Li Cohen May 13, 2024 / 10:13 AM EDT / CBS News Officials warning of hotter temps this summer Officials warning of hotter temperatures this summer after record-breaking 2023 03:46 A Canadian town is bracing for what its mayor says could be its “last stand” against a raging out-of-control wildfire that has already burned more than 13,000 acres.  As of Monday, the Parker Lake Wildfire in British Columbia had grown to 5,280 hectares, or 13,047 acres, the BC Wildfire Service said. It’s currently considered “out-of-control.”  Cliff Chapman, director of provincial operations at the service, said during a briefing on Sunday that wildfire activity in the area around Fort Nelson “increased dramatically.”  “The Parker Lake Wildfire started west of Fort Nelson on May 10 and exhibited fast growth and high fire behavior,” he said, saying responders were sent to the area immediately to help prepare the region and assist in evacuations. “…Extreme winds and dry conditions drove this fire towards the community of Fort Nelson.” He said the fire is “aggressive” and that highways in the area are closed.  “If you are still in Fort
