Biden gets blamed by Harris allies for the vice president’s resounding loss to Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden’s name wasn’t on the ballot, but history will likely remember Kamala Harris’ resounding defeat as his loss too. As Democrats pick up the pieces after President-elect Donald Trump’s decisive victory, some of the vice president’s backers are expressing frustration that Biden’s decision to seek reelection until this summer — despite long-standing voter concerns about his age and unease about post-pandemic inflation as well as the U.S.-Mexico border — all but sealed his party’s surrender of the White House. “The biggest onus of this loss is on President Biden,” said Andrew Yang, who ran against Biden in 2020 for the Democratic nomination and endorsed Harris’ unsuccessful run. “If he had stepped down in January instead of July, we may be in a very different place.” Biden will leave office after leading the United States out of the worst pandemic in a century, galvanizing international support for Ukraine after Russia’s invasion and passing a $1 trillion infrastructure bill that will affect communities for years to come. But having run four years ago against Trump to “restore the soul of the country,” Biden

Idaho’s plan to execute serial killer halted after botched attempt

Updated on: November 7, 2024 / 9:32 AM EST / CBS/AP John Grisham, Jim McCloskey on new book John Grisham and Jim McCloskey call for an end to the death penalty amid Robert Roberson case 06:49 A federal judge has temporarily halted the planned execution of an Idaho man on death row whose first lethal injection attempt was botched earlier this year . Thomas Eugene Creech was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Nov. 13 – roughly nine months after the state first tried and failed to execute him. Execution team members tried eight locations in Creech’s arms and legs on Feb. 28 but could not find a viable vein to deliver the lethal drug. U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow issued the stay this week to allow the court enough time to consider Creech’s claims that prosecutors acted improperly during his clemency hearing. Creech’s defense team also has other legal cases underway seeking to stop him from being put to death. The Idaho Department of Correction declined to comment on the postponement because the lawsuit is ongoing but said it will take at

Editorial: California doesn’t have to choose between public safety and criminal justice reform

California voters decided this week to roll back criminal justice reforms and appeared to be ousting progressive prosecutors in Los Angeles and Alameda counties, effectively reversing decisions they made as recently as 2020 and 2022. Voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36, which will allow some misdemeanor theft and drug possession to be treated as felonies, with longer prison and jail sentences. L.A. County voters rejected a second term for Dist. Atty. George Gascón, electing former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman, who promised to revoke some of the incumbent’s reforms and prosecute defendants to the fullest extent of the law. And in Alameda County, early returns were favoring a recall of Dist . Att y . Pamela Price , a civil rights lawyer elected in 2022 on promises to reduce incarceration, expand restorative justice programs and prosecute police officers for misconduct. Headlines and pundits will undoubtedly declare this the end of the criminal justice reform era. But that would be too hasty. While the approval of Proposition 36 and the loss of two reform-minded district attorneys are setbacks, a broader outlook suggests public opinion still favors a more
