Power Outages Expected from Intense Winds

Powerful winds were gusting across parts of the Southland Monday, driving up concerns about possible wildfires, with an even stronger Santa Ana wind event anticipated for later this week. A red flag warning of critical fire danger conditions will be in effect until 6 p.m. Monday in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway corridor, the Santa Clarita Valley, Malibu Coast, Calabasas, the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area. According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts topping 50 mph were recorded in the early morning hours Monday in the Santa Monica nad San Gabriel Mountains as the “moderate” Santa Ana wind event kicked in. But the winds were expected to “gradually diminish through the afternoon and evening hours.” “Peak gusts are generally in the 30 to 50 mph range across typical wind prone area of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including the Malibu coast, except the Los Angeles County mountains where gusts of 50 to 70 mph are being observed,” according to the NWS. Humidity levels were expected to fall to between 10% and 20% Monday afternoon, exacerbating the

Did Dodgers’ Miguel Rojas get last word in beef with Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr.? 🤫🤫🤫

Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas may have gotten the last word in his beef with New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. without saying — or even writing — a word. Rojas and Chisholm were Miami Marlins teammates from 2020 to 2022, which were Chisholm’s first three major league seasons. During a podcast appearance in March, Chisholm made disparaging comments about a former Miami teammate he referred to as “the team captain,” which was Rojas’ unofficial role with the Marlins at the time. “They’re not a good captain, they’re not a good person, you’re not even a good athlete at this point,” Chisolm said on “The Pivot.” “You’re just here and you’re bringing down the young guys that are supposed to be good.” Last week, after Rojas’ Dodgers defeated Chisholm’s Yankees for the World Series championship, the Instagram feed for the news media company El Lineup posted a photo of Rojas with the Commissioner’s Trophy and a caption that recounted Chisholm’s comments from the spring. “Baseball always puts everything in its place,” the post stated in Spanish. On Sunday, Rojas put a screenshot of that

How do you register new voters? This group is using regional Mexican music

The infamous wall at the U.S.-Mexico border was visible in the distance at Joe Orduño Park in San Luis, Ariz., and the sun was just beginning to set beyond it when the organizer of the music festival climbed onto the stage on an evening in October. Esau Torres, co-founder of the group Grita. Canta. Vota., which translates to Shout. Sing. Vote., talked about the famous musical artists that would be playing that evening. Then he told the crowd of about about 5,000 that this was much more than a concert. “The festival,” he told them, “ has the power to change the future of the state of Arizona.” By the time the evening was over — and artists such as Juan Olivas, Las Marias and the corrido group T3rcer Elemento, had played — about 1,000 people, mostly Mexican Americans, had registered to vote, organizers said. It was a performance that the founders of Grita. Canta. Vota. have tried to repeat again and again around the country in the months leading up to this presidential election. The Latino population in the United States now numbers more

California sues SoCal city over homeless shelter ban

The state of California has filed a lawsuit against Norwalk, alleging that the city’s moratorium on new homeless shelters and supportive housing violates several housing laws. The lawsuit, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, alleges that Norwalk’s ordinance violates anti-discrimination, fair housing and other laws. The lawsuit comes after Norwalk lost its eligibility to receive state housing and homelessness funds in October after the state Department of Housing and Community Development revoked its compliance with the housing element law.  Norwalk extends ban on new homeless shelters, day after Gov. Newsom threatens ‘legal action’ In August, the Norwalk City Council adopted an ordinance putting a moratorium on various establishments, including emergency shelters, along with transitional and supportive housing. In September, the City Council voted to extend the moratorium without discussion. Before City Council members voted on the extension, HCD sent city officials a “Notice of Violation and Corrective Action Letter” regarding the ordinance. Gov. Gavin Newsom has threatened legal action against the city in the past if the ordinance wasn’t reversed. “It is unfathomable that as our state grapples with a homelessness crisis

What will happen to mortgage rates after this week’s Fed rate cut?

A cut to the federal funds rate looms over the housing market right now. Getty Images Those who were looking to buy a home finally got a major reprieve in September when mortgage interest rates plunged to a two-year low . That came right before the Federal Reserve issued a larger-than-anticipated 50 basis point reduction to its federal funds rate . And it came after years of rising rates, which, at one point, caused those on mortgages to hit their highest level since 2000 . But a rate cut in September was supposed to be a precursor to a wider, cooling mortgage rate climate. But that’s not what happened in October. Encouraged by positive economic data surrounding inflation and unemployment, lenders started raising interest rates as quickly as they dropped them on the assumption that future rate reductions were unlikely to be as substantial as September’s was. And homebuyers and those looking to refinance suffered, as they saw rates on purchases and refinances rise by

With HELOC rates on the decline, borrowers may want to consider making some select moves this November. Getty Images/iStockphoto If you have been looking for an inexpensive way to borrow money in recent years and have been put off by the high interest rates associated with credit cards and personal loans, you may have considered using your home equity . Now, with the first cut to the federal funds rate issued in September after more than four years, and another anticipated for when the Federal Reserve meets again this week, home equity borrowing could become even cheaper.  This dynamic is already being felt with home equity lines of credit (HELOCs) . Rates on this product, which works like a revolving line of credit, dropped to an average of 8.68% last week, the lowest they’ve been all year. Borrowers considering this particular product, then, may be wondering about the potential for HELOC rates to fall even further this November. Below, we’ll break down what to expect

Texas woman who drives strangers in need receives new car

Texas retiree gets new car after good deed Texas woman gifted new car after helping neighbors in need 07:47 Lyn Story, a retired Fort Worth resident known for providing free rides to neighbors in need, received a new vehicle from Philadelphia car dealer David Kelleher. Story’s commitment to helping others first caught attention when “CBS Mornings” and David Begnaud shared her story six months ago , highlighting her selfless service to strangers despite her own financial challenges. Story, who began offering rides to people she met through the neighborhood app, “Nextdoor,” quickly became a lifeline for locals like April Goodwin and Kevin Horrigan. Goodwin, diagnosed with ovarian cancer, needed transportation to medical appointments, while Horrigan, who is blind, relied on Story’s rides to get to work three days a week. Despite her own struggles with rising gas prices and an aging car that frequently broke down, Story continued to support her community with an open heart and an open car door. “Lyn’s like a little angel; she really is,” Horrigan said. Philadelphia car dealer, David Kelleher, was inspired by Story’s dedication. Kelleher, owner of David

This Barbie’s a new mom: Margot Robbie reportedly welcomes first baby with Tom Ackerley

Margot Robbie has entered her motherhood era. The Oscar-nominated “Barbie” star and producer reportedly welcomed her first child with film producer husband Tom Ackerley. People confirmed that the spouses are now parents to a baby boy, whose name and birthday have not yet been revealed. Representatives for Robbie did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for confirmation Monday. Robbie and Ackerley, both 34, first sparked pregnancy rumors over the summer. Daily Mail in July published photos of the “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Bombshell” actor wearing a midriff top that exposed her baby bump as she and Ackerley boarded a boat in Lake Como, Italy. Shortly after the photos spread online, sources confirmed to People that Robbie and Ackerley were indeed expecting their first child. The producing duo, who have kept much of their private life under wraps, married in December 2016. Robbie and Ackerley founded Lucky Chap Entertainment with producers Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr in 2014, the same year they began dating after meeting on the set of the film “Suite Française.” Since its founding, Lucky Chap has produced Robbie starrers “I

What war? For some in Beirut, blocking out the Israel-Hezbollah conflict is just survival

BEIRUT —  Down a quiet street in one of Beirut’s fancier neighborhoods, couples huddle over designer cocktails. The music of jazz trumpeter Enrico Rava washes over the dining room as solicitous waiters recite the evening’s specials, their delivery unaffected by the thud of bombs falling on a neighborhood nearby. Barely two miles away, Israeli warplanes begin their near-nightly pummeling of the Dahiyeh, the cluster of Beirut suburbs where Hezbollah holds sway. In Lebanon’s south, entire villages and towns have been erased in recent Israeli bombardment, triggered by Hezbollah’s yearlong rocket campaign against northern Israel. More than 2,200 Lebanese have been killed in recent weeks, while a quarter of the country’s population is displaced. But for a significant segment of this capital’s residents, the war remains somewhat removed. Despite the incessant buzz of drones and the drum line of occasional explosions, for those determined to stay out of the fight between the Iran-backed Shiite militant group and Israel, it’s the “war over there.” Hussein Ghadban, 3, who fled with his parents from the village of Mais al-Jabal in south Lebanon amid the ongoing Hezbollah-Israel war, plays on

Longtime San Luis Obispo pediatrician retires after nearly 40 years

A longtime Central Coast pediatrician is now enjoying retirement after spending his last full day seeing patients at the end of last week. Nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Rene Bravo decided to make the Central Coast his home. During that time, he helped thousands of children stay healthy. You dont have to ask very many parents who their pediatrician is before Dr. Bravos name is mentioned. Hes connected with families in a way few other physicians do even being named San Luis Obispos Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce a few years ago. When KSBYs Richard Gearhart sat down with him just before he retired, Gearhart asked Dr. Bravo why the community feels such a connection to him. You know, that’s, that’s a question that I asked myself, to be honest with you. You know, I, I, I would like to say that I care. I really do care about the people that I’m interacting with. I want them to do well. I want people to do well. I want my community to do well. It’s a good place to live, Dr.

Election Day security measures in place in San Luis Obispo

Due to heightened emotions around the election, the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorders Office says it is working closely with law enforcement to keep voters, poll workers and ballots safe and secure. Like every election, we have a good relationship with law enforcement, and we call on them to back us up. The clerk-recorder is in contact with all seven police chiefs and the sheriff to make sure theyre aware of polling locations and staffing, explained Public Information Specialist Erin Clausen, San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office. Additionally, local law enforcement will escort ballot trucks as they transport ballots from collection sites to the elections center. Its essential to make sure that people feel safe to go out to cast their vote and that people respect one another and our democratic process, one person with the department told KSBY. ‘Googly eyed’ Martian eclipse captured by NASA rover

A NASA rover searching for signs of life on Mars got a clear view of one of the Red Planet’s moons passing in front of the sun.  The Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021 after launching the previous July, has the primary goal of searching for signs of ancient microbial life that could unlock clues to the past habitability of Mars.  Newly released video shows Phobos, the larger of Mars’ two moons, moving in between the planet and the sun and creating a sort of googly eyed-like effect. Sheriff’s lieutenant apologizes for saying he “won’t help Democrats”

Lt. John Rodgers, a 20-year sheriff’s veteran in Clark County, where Springfield  is the county seat, made the statements in several posts on Facebook, CBS affiliate WHIO-TV reported. In one post, he reportedly wrote: “I am sorry. If you support the Democrat Party I will not help you.” Another said: “The problem is that I know which of you supports the Democratic Party and I will not help you survive the end of days.” Another post indicated people would need to “provide proof of who you voted for” if they asked Rodgers for help, the station reported. The sheriff’s office said Rodgers, who has commanded the department’s road patrol, would remain on duty, with a written

Is it ever OK to ignore credit card debt collectors?

We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms. Ignoring your debt collectors can be tempting — but it’s typically the wrong approach to take. Getty Images With credit card interest rates sitting at historically high levels right now, millions of cardholders are struggling to pay off what they owe. After all, as the compounding interest charges rack up, it’s easy for even a small card balance to balloon quickly. As a result, about 9% of cardholders are now delinquent on their credit card payments, meaning that they’re facing late fees, increased interest rates and other repercussions. If a credit card balance goes unpaid for an extended period, the card issuer may deem it uncollectible. At this stage, the debt is typically sold to a debt collection agency , which purchases it for a fraction of the original balance. This agency then becomes responsible for attempting to recover the debt by using tactics like frequent calls, letters and even legal action . These aggressive and persistent tactics can add a significant amount of stress

Here are the 28 states where workers are guaranteed time off to vote

Early voting surges as Election Day arrives Early voting breaks records as the White House race tightens 04:29 Because Election Day isn’t a U.S. holiday, many American adults are at work on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November, the day designated for federal, state and local general elections. But 28 states and several thousand companies guarantee workers time off to vote. Without a federal law guaranteeing voting leave, some workers may take a financial hit if they need to leave work to cast their ballots, depending on the state in which they live and work.  Making Election Day a federal holiday has been proposed multiple times, with the most recent measure introduced earlier this year by Rep. Anna Eshoo, a Democrat from California, via the Election Day Holiday Act, which is now stalled in Congress. She cited a study that found 26% of Americans report that obligations including work kept them from the polls.  “No one should be unable to vote because they have to work or care for a family member,” Rep. Eshoo stated in February.  Four years ago, 62.8% of people of voting

State sues Southern California city that’s banned new homeless shelters

The state of California filed suit against Norwalk on Monday, alleging the southeastern Los Angeles County city’s moratorium on new homeless shelters and supportive housing violates a half dozen housing laws. “No community should turn its back on its residents in need,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. In August, Norwalk’s City Council passed a law banning the facilities along with new laundromats, liquor stores and payday lenders until at least next summer. Council members said the city of 100,000 had been a dumping ground for homeless projects that were straining the budget and leading to disorder. Norwalk’s ban has already led to the cancellation of a hotel leasing effort that county officials believed would have sheltered 80 people. Calling Norwalk’s law “beyond cruel,” Newsom has threatened litigation for months and already withdrew state approval for Norwalk’s development blueprint, making it ineligible for certain affordable housing dollars. Monday’s suit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court contends Norwalk’s ordinance violates anti-discrimination, fair housing and other laws. Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said Norwalk’s actions have been “brazenly and defiantly violative of the

B. Riley-backed Vitamin Shoppe owner files for bankruptcy

Franchise Group, the company at the heart of a troubled management buyout that has devastated the stock of B. Riley Financial, has filed for bankruptcy — but plans to keep open most of its retail brands, including Vitamin Shoppe. The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday, announcing it already had a deal with about 80% of its senior secured lenders that would allow them to convert their debt into ownership stakes and continue operating the businesses. The company’s chains also include Pet Supplies Plus and Buddy’s Home Furnishings. Its fourth retailer, discount furniture and appliance seller American Freight, will be closed. American Freight operates more than a dozen stores in California, including outlets in Torrance, West Covina and Palmdale. Westwood-based B. Riley took the Delaware, Ohio, company private last year in a $2.8-billion management-led buyout that turned disastrous amid slowing sales for Franchise Group and a scandal involving ties between its founder, Brian Kahn, and Prophecy Asset Management, a hedge fund that federal prosecutors allege defrauded investors of $294 million. Kahn has denied any wrongdoing. B. Riley took on $600 million in
