In Georgia, Democrats hope to win a state they flipped in 2020. Do Republicans have the edge?

ATLANTA —  Four years ago, Deborah Scott played a key role in helping President Biden win Georgia, leading a band of mostly Black women to canvass, phone bank, even dance outside polling stations as part of a movement that helped flip this historically conservative Southern state blue. But even as the grassroots organizing dynamo hustles to get out the vote this year, she is not sure she and other Black and brown organizers can coax and inspire enough voters to the polls to deliver another win for Democrats. “I don’t feel confident of anything,” the chief executive of Georgia STAND-UP said as she took a break Friday from bopping to Southern trap outside a polling station in a historic Black neighborhood of southwest Atlanta and waving a sign that said “YOU have the POWER.” Deborah Scott, center, wraps up a get out the vote party outside a polling station with activists from Georgia STAND-UP and Black Voters Matter on Friday. Sierra Leone captures Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, beating favored Fierceness

DEL MAR —  Sierra Leone had a reputation as a talented horse that never seemed to win. In his last four races he finished second twice and third twice. All that changed on Saturday when he charged to the front at the top of the stretch and won the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at the Del Mar Turf Club. The 3-year-old colt beat the favored Fierceness, winner of the Travers Stakes, by 1½ lengths. Japanese horse Forever Young was third and Newgate finished fourth. Sierra Leone broke 11th in the 14-horse field and hung around midpack until the far turn when he started to make his move. He was third at the mile mark. He engaged with Fierceness entering the stretch but in the end his late speed was too much for the competition. “For him to have this moment and to get over all the frustrations during the year [is unbelievable],” trainer Chad Brown said. [There were] races I went in there thinking I’m finally going to win the Derby or finally win the Travers with this horse but then to walk away and

Invasive mussel found in North America for first time, posing immediate threat in California’s Delta

A particularly worrisome mussel species has entered North America for the first time through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta — sparking what many are calling an immediate threat to California’s most significant watersheds. Golden mussels, invasive freshwater bivalves that have devastated ecosystems and critical water infrastructure in other parts of the world, were recently discovered near the Port of Stockton. Limnoperna fortunei appear to have also found their way many miles downstream into O’Neill Forebay of the San Luis Reservoir, where officials in Merced County have been rapidly conducting genetic testing. “The species poses a significant immediate threat to the ecological health of the Delta and all waters of the state, water conveyance systems, infrastructure and water quality,” according to a public alert by the California Department of Water Resources and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “This discovery is the first known occurrence of golden mussels in North America.” These mussels probably infiltrated California by a ship traveling from an international port and are likely to spread throughout the Delta and through the water infrastructure associated with the Delta, officials said in a

Judge rejects suit seeking to block acceptance of hand-returned mail ballots

November 2, 2024 / 7:24 PM EDT / AP What early voting numbers show in Georgia What early voting numbers show in Georgia 01:34 A Georgia judge on Saturday rejected a Republican lawsuit trying to block counties from opening election offices on Saturday and Sunday to let voters hand in their mail ballots in person. The lawsuit only named Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold that includes most of the city of Atlanta and is home to 11% of the state’s voters. But at least five other populous counties that tend to vote for Democrats also announced election offices would open over the weekend to allow hand return of absentee ballots. The lawsuit was filed late Friday and cited a section of Georgia law that says ballot drop boxes cannot be open past the end of advance voting, which ended Friday. But state law says voters can deliver their absentee ballots in person to county election offices until the close of polls at 7 p.m. on Election Day. Despite that clear wording, lawyer Alex Kaufman initially claimed in an emergency hearing Saturday that voters aren’t allowed

UCLA nearly blows 20-point lead before beating Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. —  As the ball sailed through the air, his team’s fate hanging in the balance, Kaylin Moore seemed bound to be an observer to destiny. The UCLA cornerback appeared to be standing behind the play as teammate Bryan Addison and Nebraska slot receiver Jacory Barney Jr. jostled for the pass that could put the Cornhuskers on the verge of a stunning comeback. Once down by 20 points, Nebraska was driving on UCLA’s side of the field in the final minute Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium. A touchdown could tie the score or give the Cornhuskers an unlikely victory with a two-point conversion. Moore made sure neither was a possibility. After Addison and Barney collided going for the pass, the ball bounced off Barney’s knee and hung in the air. Moore lunged for the leather at the Bruins’ 13-yard line, cradling the ball and victory in his hands. Collapse averted. Game over. Moore sprinted down the field in celebration of his game-saving play with 29 seconds left that gave UCLA an unexpectedly breathless 27-20 victory. “A huge play for Kaylin,” UCLA coach DeShaun Foster said.

2 Ohio officers involved in Black man’s death charged with reckless homicide

November 2, 2024 / 5:51 PM EDT / AP Prosecutors in Ohio have announced reckless homicide charges against two police officers in the death of a man who was handcuffed and left face down on the floor of a social club in Canton while telling officers he couldn’t breathe. Stark County prosecutor Kyle Stone told reporters Saturday that the charges against Canton officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch were brought by a grand jury in the April 18 death of Frank Tyson, a 53-year-old East Canton resident taken into custody shortly after a vehicle crash that had severed a utility pole. Police body-camera footage showed Tyson, who was Black, resisting and saying repeatedly, “They’re trying to kill me” and “Call the sheriff” as he was taken to the floor, and he told officers he could not breathe. Officers told Tyson he was fine, to calm down and to stop fighting as he was handcuffed face down, and officers joked with bystanders and leafed through Tyson’s wallet before realizing he was in a medical crisis. The county coroner’s office ruled Tyson’s death a homicide in August

Settlement `In Principle’ Reached in Dueling Pussycat Dolls Suits

A settlement `in principle’ has been reached in cross litigation between Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger and the group’s creator regarding the 2022 cancellation of a proposed group reunion tour. Robin Antin, the choreographer who started the Pussycat Dolls, sued Scherzinger in September 2021, alleging the singer wrongfully refused to participate in the group’s planned reunion tour unless she was granted full creative control and a larger share in the group’s business venture. The tour was canceled in early 2022. In their court papers, Antin’s attorneys called Scherzinger’s ultimatums a form of “extortion’ that were “materially different” than those the parties had agreed upon under a February 2019 contract. The attorneys in the case filed joint papers on Friday with Judge Mark H. Epstein notifying him of a settlement “in principle” that they said is “subject to the execution of certain written agreements.” No proposed terms were divulged. Scherzinger, now 46, countersued Antin in August 2022, stating that Antin breached her duties and obligations to Scherzinger, severely damaged (the Pussycat Dolls’) goodwill and wasted the funding for the planned PCD reunion tour, ruining PCD’s ability

Fired LMU Women’s Soccer Coach Drops Wrongful Termination Suit

A former Loyola Marymount University women’s soccer coach has dropped her wrongful termination lawsuit in which she alleged she encountered resistance to her directives from the athletic department on down to her students. Jenny Bindon’s Santa Monica Superior Court lawsuit had a host of other allegations, including breach of contract, retaliation, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On Thursday, her attorney filed court papers with Judge H. Jay Ford III asking that Bindon’s case be dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled. The court papers do not state if a settlement was reached or if Bindon was not pursuing the case for other reasons. Bindon was hired in December 2019 as the sixth head coach in program history. During her two seasons with LMU, she posted an overall record of 1-26-1. In the 2020-21 season — which was played during the spring semester due to the coronavirus pandemic — the Lions posted a 1-7-1 record. As a player, Bindon represented the New Zealand national team for 10 years, collecting 77 caps, the most by a goalkeeper, men’s or women’s, in that nation’s history.

Trump and Harris make their final pitch to voters in last weekend before election day

In the final, frenetic days of the 2024 campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are crisscrossing the country, keeping up a dizzying schedule of rallies, public appearances and media interviews as they make their final pitch to voters in critical swing states. Trump is campaigning aggressively in North Carolina, with three weekend rallies in the state, where elections officials have scrambled to ensure voters are able to cast their ballots in counties devastated by Hurricane Helene in September. Harris, after rallies in Atlanta and in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, is set to spend Sunday in Michigan, a “blue wall” state where Trump eked out a victory in 2016 before narrowly losing to Joe Biden four years later. Harris is scheduled to appear in and around Detroit on Sunday before an evening rally at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Controversial remarks by Trump — who said in Wisconsin last week that, “whether the women like it or not,” he would protect them — reverberated throughout the weekend, as did a bizarre moment during a Friday night rally in Milwaukee in which the
