Sierra Leone captures Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, beating favorite Fierceness

DEL MAR —  Sierra Leone’s reputation was as a talented horse that never seemed to win. In his last four races he finished second twice and third twice. All that changed on Saturday when he charged to the front at the top of the stretch and won the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at the Del Mar Turf Club. The 3-year-old colt beat the favored Fierceness, winner of the Travers Stakes, by 1½ lengths. Japanese horse Forever Young was third and Newgate finished fourth. Sierra Leone broke 11th in the 14-horse field and hung around midpack until far turn when he started to make his move. He was third at the mile mark. He engaged with Fierceness entering the stretch but in the end his late speed was too much for the competition. “For him to have this moment and to get over all the frustrations during the year [is unbelievable],” trainer Chad Brown said. [There were] races I went in there thinking I’m finally going to win the Derby or finally win the Travers with this horse but then to walk away and unsaddling him

U.S. accuses Russia of election misinfo U.S. accuses Russia of spreading election misinformation 02:00 U.S. officials believe another two fake videos circulating online and publicly identified by the FBI as an attempt to push false election security claims are likely part of a  Russia-backed malign influence campaign  ahead of Tuesday’s presidential election, two sources familiar with the process told CBS News.  The news comes after the FBI said in a statement Saturday that the videos “are not authentic, are not from the FBI, and the content they depict is false.” The agency said that one of the videos falsely claims “the FBI has apprehended three linked groups committing ballot fraud, and the second relates to first gentleman Doug Emhoff.” The FBI in its statement did not say who was behind the videos, and when reached by CBS News, declined to comment further.  It added that the two videos — using Justice Department and FBI signage within them and images of Emhoff — were being circulated as part of “attempts to deceive the public with false content about FBI operations.” The FBI did not attribute the

Invasive mussel found in North America for first time, poses immediate threat in California’s delta

A particularly-worrisome mussel species has snuck into North America for the first time through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta — sparking what many are calling an immediate threat to California’s most significant watersheds. Golden mussels, an invasive freshwater bivalve that has devastated ecosystems and critical water infrastructure in other parts of the world, were recently discovered near the Port of Stockton. Limnoperna fortunei appear to have also found their way many miles downstream into O’Neill Forebay of the San Luis Reservoir, where officials in Merced County have been rapidly conducting genetic testing. “The species poses a significant immediate threat to the ecological health of the Delta and all waters of the state, water conveyance systems, infrastructure and water quality,” according to a public alert by the California Department of Water Resources and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “This discovery is the first known occurrence of golden mussels in North America.” These mussels likely infiltrated California by a ship traveling from an international port and are likely to spread throughout the Delta and through the water infrastructure associated with the Delta, officials said in

2 Ohio officers involved in Black man’s death charged with reckless homicide

November 2, 2024 / 5:51 PM EDT / AP Prosecutors in Ohio have announced reckless homicide charges against two police officers in the death of a man who was handcuffed and left face down on the floor of a social club in Canton while telling officers he couldn’t breathe. Stark County prosecutor Kyle Stone told reporters Saturday that the charges against Canton officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch were brought by a grand jury in the April 18 death of Frank Tyson, a 53-year-old East Canton resident taken into custody shortly after a vehicle crash that had severed a utility pole. Police body-camera footage showed Tyson, who was Black, resisting and saying repeatedly, “They’re trying to kill me” and “Call the sheriff” as he was taken to the floor, and he told officers he could not breathe. Officers told Tyson he was fine, to calm down and to stop fighting as he was handcuffed face down, and officers joked with bystanders and leafed through Tyson’s wallet before realizing he was in a medical crisis. The county coroner’s office ruled Tyson’s death a homicide in August

Settlement `In Principle’ Reached in Dueling Pussycat Dolls Suits

A settlement `in principle’ has been reached in cross litigation between Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger and the group’s creator regarding the 2022 cancellation of a proposed group reunion tour. Robin Antin, the choreographer who started the Pussycat Dolls, sued Scherzinger in September 2021, alleging the singer wrongfully refused to participate in the group’s planned reunion tour unless she was granted full creative control and a larger share in the group’s business venture. The tour was canceled in early 2022. In their court papers, Antin’s attorneys called Scherzinger’s ultimatums a form of “extortion’ that were “materially different” than those the parties had agreed upon under a February 2019 contract. The attorneys in the case filed joint papers on Friday with Judge Mark H. Epstein notifying him of a settlement “in principle” that they said is “subject to the execution of certain written agreements.” No proposed terms were divulged. Scherzinger, now 46, countersued Antin in August 2022, stating that Antin breached her duties and obligations to Scherzinger, severely damaged (the Pussycat Dolls’) goodwill and wasted the funding for the planned PCD reunion tour, ruining PCD’s ability

Fired LMU Women’s Soccer Coach Drops Wrongful Termination Suit

A former Loyola Marymount University women’s soccer coach has dropped her wrongful termination lawsuit in which she alleged she encountered resistance to her directives from the athletic department on down to her students. Jenny Bindon’s Santa Monica Superior Court lawsuit had a host of other allegations, including breach of contract, retaliation, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On Thursday, her attorney filed court papers with Judge H. Jay Ford III asking that Bindon’s case be dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled. The court papers do not state if a settlement was reached or if Bindon was not pursuing the case for other reasons. Bindon was hired in December 2019 as the sixth head coach in program history. During her two seasons with LMU, she posted an overall record of 1-26-1. In the 2020-21 season — which was played during the spring semester due to the coronavirus pandemic — the Lions posted a 1-7-1 record. As a player, Bindon represented the New Zealand national team for 10 years, collecting 77 caps, the most by a goalkeeper, men’s or women’s, in that nation’s history.

Trump and Harris make their final pitch to voters in last weekend before election day

In the final, frenetic days of the 2024 campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are crisscrossing the country, keeping up a dizzying schedule of rallies, public appearances and media interviews as they make their final pitch to voters in critical swing states. Trump is campaigning aggressively in North Carolina, with three weekend rallies in the state, where elections officials have scrambled to ensure voters are able to cast their ballots in counties devastated by Hurricane Helene in September. Harris, after rallies in Atlanta and in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, is set to spend Sunday in Michigan, a “blue wall” state where Trump eked out a victory in 2016 before narrowly losing to Joe Biden four years later. Harris is scheduled to appear in and around Detroit on Sunday before an evening rally at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Controversial remarks by Trump — who said in Wisconsin last week that, “whether the women like it or not,” he would protect them — reverberated throughout the weekend, as did a bizarre moment during a Friday night rally in Milwaukee in which the

Florida’s convicted killer clown released from prison

Updated on: November 2, 2024 / 3:05 PM EDT / AP CBS News Live CBS News Miami Live A woman who pleaded guilty to dressing as a clown and in 1990 murdering the wife of a man she later married was released from prison Saturday, ending a case that has been strange even by Florida standards. Sheila Keen-Warren , 61, was released 18 months after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the shooting of Marlene Warren, Florida Department of Corrections records show. The plea deal came shortly before her trial would have started. Keen-Warren , who has maintained her innocence even after her plea, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. But she had been in custody for seven years since her arrest in 2017, and Florida’s law in 1990 allowed significant credit for good behavior. It had been expected she would be released in about two years. “Sheila Keen-Warren will always be an admitted convicted murderer and will wear that stain for every day for the rest of her life,” Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said in a statement Saturday. Los Angeles County opens hundreds more voting centers in lead-up to election day

With election day right around the corner, Los Angeles County officials opened hundreds of additional vote centers Saturday where voters can go to cast early ballots in person. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk opened an additional 526 centers, according to a post on its X account. This is on top of the 122 centers already open across the county, where people can go to vote in person or drop off their ballot for the Nov. 5 election. The centers are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Most wait times were under 15 minutes, according to officials. The county’s mobile voting centers will also travel across the region until election day. Voters also have the option of submitting completed ballots through the mail, so long as they were postmarked before or on Nov. 5 and received by Nov. 12. Mail-in ballots can also be returned at voter centers or vote-by-mail drop boxes. Eligible voters who aren’t registered can complete a conditional voter registration at a center and cast a ballot in the election. The ballot includes a long slate of statewide and local candidates

Will the Dodgers re-sign Teoscar Hernández? Walker Buehler? The offseason questions begin

Outfielder Juan Soto became a free agent this offseason. Will the Dodgers, who just faced him in the World Series, make a play for him? (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times) The most obvious holes on next year’s roster, as things currently stand, are in the outfield and starting rotation. Even if the Dodgers keep Betts in right field (a position he only switched back to late this year after initially moving to the infield), the club is without a left fielder with Teoscar Hernández entering free agency. They can play Edman in center, but only if they have another option at shortstop. They also have Pages, Taylor and James Outman on the roster, but none of those three could cement everyday roles this year. It’s part of the reason why, even after spending more than $1 billion last winter, the Dodgers might get involved in another high-priced free-agency sweepstakes for superstar Juan Soto this offseason — especially if they don’t re-sign Hernández. As for the rotation, the Dodgers will likely need at least one, if not multiple, new starting pitchers. Between the limited workloads

Oklahoma small town police chief and entire police department resign

November 2, 2024 / 3:00 PM EDT / AP The police chief and three officers that make up the entire four-person police department of the town of Geary, Oklahoma, and two of the town’s city council members have resigned with little explanation. Former Police Chief Alicia Ford did not address the specific reasons for the Thursday resignations, but wrote in a social media post that the decision was difficult. “It is with great sadness that I and the rest of the Geary police officers will no longer be serving this community,” Ford wrote, “but it was the right decision for me and the other officers.” Ford, without elaboration, encouraged residents of the town of nearly 1,000 about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Oklahoma City to become acquainted with the city council “and to be as involved as possible in the city, especially attending the city council meetings.” Ford did not immediately return a phone message for comment on Saturday. A woman who answered a phone call to a number listed for Mayor Waylan Upchego on Saturday said “not at this time” when a reporter asked
