Oceanside Pier to reopen after fire

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Oceanside Pier is set to reopen next Friday after a fire erupted at the end of the pier last week, city officials said. The City of Oceanside announced on Friday it aims to have roughly 80% of the pier open, starting from the pier’s base to beyond the restrooms and the fish washing station at the last “offset.” Fourth body found where three missing surfers located “The damaged far west end of the Oceanside Pier will remain closed and fenced off until further notice, as debris removal and reconstruction will soon be underway,” the city said. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the Pier is safe for all.” On April 25, the flames broke out at the end of the historic pier. The fire damaged a vacant restaurant building that formerly housed a Ruby’s Diner. Earlier this week, Oceanside fire officials determined the pier fire was likely started from “accidental causes,” saying there was no evidence it was intentionally set.

Fourth body found where three missing surfers located

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Baja California Attorney General’s Office on Friday confirmed a fourth body was found after authorities located the bodies of three missing surfers, including one U.S. citizen San Diego resident, who went missing during a surfing trip south of Ensenada, Mexico. All four bodies were found in a well near a surfing spot known as La Bocana, about 130 miles south of San Diego, according to the attorney general’s office. The fourth body was identified as a ranch owner who was reported missing two weeks ago, per officials. He owned the property where the bodies were found, the attorney general said. Rescuers say it took them around 20 hours to pull the bodies out of the well measuring almost 50 feet. The cause of death for all four victims has not been determined at this time, the attorney general’s office said. Earlier this week, the three surfers were reported missing through social media posts. Baja California authorities officially announced their disappearance in a press release Thursday. UCSD cancels Sun God Festival as ‘Gaza Solidarity’ camp enters third day

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — UC San Diego officials abruptly cancelled the Sun God Festival a mere days before it was set to take place due to the “Gaza Solidarity” encampment, marking the third time ever that the annual event has not gone on as planned in its 40 year history. In a statement Thursday night, Maureen Harrigan, interim vice chancellor for resource management and planning, said the decision was made over concerns about campus security resources being stretched thin between the festival and the protest outside Geisel Library. “Due to ongoing protest activity adjacent to Library Walk, our campus security resources that would otherwise be available to ensure the safety and security of the people participating in Sun God must be deployed elsewhere to support the overall security of our students, faculty, staff and visitors,” Harrigan said. Can students at San Diego universities get punished for protesting? “We know that this event is a beloved campus tradition and understand the disappointment that this decision causes for many,” Harrigan continued. The annual festival has been a staple of the campus culture since the mid-1980s. According
