Review: Timothée Chalamet is the best thing about the Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’

While watching a screening of the new Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” attended by the film’s star last week, I kept asking myself the same question. Who, exactly, is this movie for? Two stridently different, yet equally deranged, fandoms will certainly eat up the film, which opens in theaters on Dec. 25. Hardcore Dylan acolytes will find much to love, and hate, about it as well as plenty of opportunities to endlessly complain and/or debate its finest of points. Meanwhile Timothée Chalamet fans will adore the 28-year-old movie star’s intensely focused performance that seemingly came from the ABS — Always Be Smoking — school of method acting. (Director James Mangold has said the film is more of a Robert Altman-style ensemble piece than a traditional biopic, but Chalamet is front and center pretty much the entire time.) I’m unclear, however, what the audiences who made smashes out of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman” will think of this lengthy, ponderous film about an enormously gifted young performer who responds to his nearly instant fame by retreating into his own world and alienating the very people who

Alex Jones keeps Infowars for now after judge rejects The Onion’s winning auction bid

HOUSTON — A federal judge in Texas rejected the auction sale of Alex Jones’ Infowars to The Onion satirical news outlet, criticizing the bidding for the conspiracy theory platform as flawed as well as how much money families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting stood to receive. The decision late Tuesday night is a victory for Jones, whose Infowars site was put up for sale as part of his bankruptcy case in the wake of the nearly $1.5 billion that courts have ordered him to pay over falsely calling one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history a hoax. Families of the Sandy Hook victims had backed The Onion’s bid. Following a two-day hearing in Houston, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez said he would not approve the sale, while citing concerns about transparency in the auction. That clears the way for Jones to keep – at least for now – Infowars, which is headquartered in Austin, Texas. The Onion had planned to kick Jones out and relaunch Infowars in January as a parody. “We are deeply disappointed in today’s decision, but The Onion

Attorneys for man accused in Trump assassination attempt seek lengthy trial delay

By TERRY SPENCER FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — Attorneys for a man accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump in September asked a federal judge on Wednesday to delay his trial until next December as they need more time to review the evidence against him and decide whether to mount an insanity defense. Ryan Wesley Routh’s public defenders told District Judge Aileen Cannon they cannot prepare their case by February when the trial is currently scheduled, saying that’s not enough time to review the massive amounts of phone and computer evidence the FBI has retrieved. Routh owned 17 cellphones and numerous other electronic devices, plus there are hundreds of hours of police body camera and surveillance videos that have been provided to the defense. Assistant federal public defender Kristy Militello told Cannon the only other clients she has had with more voluminous evidence presented against them are those accused of complicated frauds and two who were accused of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S Capitol. Only one other attorney and an investigator are working with her on the case

How to catch the Geminids, one of the strongest meteor showers of the year

By CHRISTINA LARSON The Geminids — among the few major meteor showers to come from asteroids — peak on Friday. It’s one of the year’s last chances to see fireballs in the sky. The shower often produces meteors with a distinctly more yellow glow, likely due to the unusual origin material, said Sally Brummel, planetarium manager at the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum. Under ideal viewing conditions, the Geminids typically put on one of the best and brightest shows of the year because of the high volume of meteors visible each hour. However, an almost full moon this year means up to 15 meteors per hour are expected at peak time, according to the American Meteor Society. The moonlight “will wash out a lot of them,” Brummel said. Viewing lasts until Dec. 21. Here’s what to know about the Geminids and other meteor showers. What is a meteor shower? Multiple meteor showers occur annually and you don’t need special equipment to see them. Most meteor showers originate from the debris of comets, but a few — including the Geminids — result from the debris of

What’s next for SF Giants after signing Adames? Posey admits there are more roster holes to fill

DALLAS — Willy Adames makes the San Francisco Giants a better baseball team. He fills a position of need. He provides power and defense. In Buster Posey’s estimation, Adames and Matt Chapman, who signed his own lucrative deal, represent baseball’s best left side of the infield. But Adames alone does not elevate the Giants to contention status. Adames alone doesn’t guarantee they’ll be a playoff team. So when Posey was asked if it was fair to say that the team still has multiple holes to fill, the Giants’ president of baseball operations didn’t entirely disagree. “I think baseball is unique in the sense that that’s probably true for any team,” Posey said. Posey has repeated his goal to build a team with strong defense and pitching. Adames, one of baseball’s better defensive shortstops, addresses the former. With Adames in place, Posey and general manager Zack Minasian can turn their attention to addressing the latter. San Francisco’s rotation, as currently constructed, features Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong. (Posey said on Monday that Hicks will be a starter.) California child possibly infected with bird flu after drinking raw milk, health officials say

Wednesday, December 11, 2024 9:09PM Marin County health officials say a child with a suspected bird flu infection drank raw milk before getting sick. MARIN COUNTY, Calif. — Marin County health officials say a child with a suspected bird flu infection drank raw milk before getting sick. Officials say the child experienced symptoms, including a fever and vomiting, after drinking the potentially contaminated milk. The child has recovered, and no other family members have gotten sick. An investigation is ongoing as it’s still not clear whether people can become infected with bird flu from drinking raw milk. This case is one of two human infections being investigated in the Bay Area, as officials are still working to understand how another child in Alameda County fell ill. The Centers for Disease Control has ruled out raw milk as a source but has not yet identified how this child was exposed. California health officials recently announced recalls from the Fresno County-based dairy RAW FARM after its products tested positive for the virus. The USDA has also ordered testing across the nation’s raw milk supply to track the

FBI Director Wray says he intends to resign at end of Biden’s term in January

By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray told the bureau workforce Wednesday that he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January, an announcement that came a week and a half after President-elect Donald Trump said he would nominate loyalist Kash Patel for the job. Wray said at a town hall meeting that he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought,” three years short of the completion of a 10-year term marked by high-profile and politically charged investigations, including that led to two separate indictments of Trump last year. Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Trump had settled on Patel to be director and had repeatedly aired his ire at Wray, including in a television interview broadcast Sunday. By stepping down rather than waiting to be fired, Wray is trying to avert a collision with the new Trump administration that he said would have further entangled the FBI “deeper into the fray.” “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people

Anthony Weiner, ex-congressman jailed in sexting scandal, files to run for NYC City Council seat

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner appears to be trying to mount a political comeback and has officially registered to run for an East Village City Council seat. The once-promising politician, now infamous after being brought down by two very public sexting scandals and serving time in prison for sexting a minor, filed the paperwork formalizing his status as a candidate last week after publicly toying with the idea of running for the Council seat. Weiner said Tuesday his account with the city’s campaign finance board should be considered “exploratory” and that he hasn’t yet decided on whether to actually run. Weiner said he filed the paperwork because a local Democratic club required it to be considered at a candidates forum Thursday. “So here I am,” he said. “I’m doing this one step at a time,” Weiner said in a phone interview that was interrupted multiple times as he tried to usher his dog, a pit terrier lab mix named Billy, into his apartment after returning from a walk. The race to replace Council Member Carlina Rivera, who cannot run in 2025 due to term limits, is
