Los Molinos’ outstanding season ends with 41-6 loss to Balboa

For about one half,  it seemed like the Los Molinos High School football team had a chance to play for the Division 7-A state championship next week. But in the second half, Balboa High took control with its dominant run game, piling up 191 yards in the third quarter alone en route to a 41-6 victory at City College of San Francisco. That was due to the sheer size difference between the two schools. Los Molinos coach Dan Gilbert noted that his team played a school that not only had 1,300 students but was a Buccaneer line that outweighed his team by 50-100 pounds across the board. “We matched up well at skill positions. We were better in the back end,” he said, adding that his team played hard and kept its cool. “They fought hard and didn’t respond to the punches and kicks that were thrown in the game.” With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 8-6 on the season, but it was a year that saw them claim the first Northern Section championship in 11-man football in school history. In 2018, they won

Live 49ers updates: Short-handed Niners lead Bears in fourth quarter

The 49ers are clinging to their playoff hopes as they return Sunday to Levi’s Stadium to play their first home game in three weeks. The Niners face first overall draft pick Caleb Williams and the Bears, who fired coach Matt Eberflus last week after a Thanksgiving loss to the Lions, Chicago’s sixth consecutive defeat. San Francisco won’t have Christian McCaffrey, who injured his knee last week and is out for the season. Jordan Mason, McCaffrey’s backup, is out too with a sprained ankle, so it’ll be up to rookie Isaac Guerendo to run the ball for the 49ers. Other stars will also be missing: Nick Bosa was ruled out Saturday with an oblique injury that has lingered for weeks and Trent Williams’ ankle injury will also keep him off the field. HOUSTON, Texas — The family of Austin Tice, a Houston native and Marine veteran, who was captured by Syrian forces a decade ago, said they are waiting to see what unfolds after new information revealed that he may still be alive. Tice’s parents, Debra and Marc, spoke on Friday. They remained tight-lipped about who the sources were but said they were vetted by the US government. Austin is a published American journalist who went missing in 2012 after he passed through a checkpoint in a contested area located west of Damascus. Rep. Mike Turner says President Assad’s fall in Syria “is a blow to Iran, a blow to Russia”

Rep. Mike Turner, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” that developments out of Syria that saw President Bashar Assad resign and flee the country after insurgents took control of Damascus are a blow to his allies, Iran and Russia. He said the U.S. government — which has some 900 troops in Syria — will continue to monitor the developments.

49ers-Bears pregame: Hufanga, Ward, Lenoir bolster secondary

SANTA CLARA — Safety Talanoa Hufanga indeed will suit up today for only the third time this season, bolstering a full-staff secondary against Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams. It’s yet to be determined whether Hufanga will reclaim a starting spot in place of either Ji’Ayir Brown or rookie Malik Mustapha ahead of the 1:25 p.m. kickoff. Hufanga was on the field two hours before kickoff, resuming his usual pregame routine and doing so without a cast protecting his wrist. Deommodore Lenoir returns from a one-game hiatus (knee), and fellow cornerback Charvarius Ward will play in his second straight game after a four-game break. Saturday’s flurry of transactions saw the 49ers activate Hufanga from injured reserve after a right-wrist injury shelved him since the Week 5 loss at Arizona; he missed the first two games this season still recovering from last season’s right-knee injury. The 49ers (5-7) will look to snap a three-game losing streak while missing defensive end Nick Bosa (oblique), right tackle Trent Williams (ankle), and, left guard Aaron Banks (concussion). Ward did not practice Friday, being excused for a personal matter while grieving the

49ers’ Brock Purdy, Chicago’s Caleb Williams take divergent routes as franchise quarterbacks

SANTA CLARA — It’s a whole new ballgame for Brock Purdy, who through good fortune and the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft stepped into a near-perfect situation with the 49ers and surpassed all expectations. About the same time Purdy was coming out of nowhere as a rookie, Caleb Williams was winning the Heisman Trophy at USC and a year away from being the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft by the Chicago Bears. All Purdy did was take his the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Games, tearing a ligament in his elbow as a rookie and winning two come-from-behind playoff games before acquitting himself well in Super Bowl LVIII only to fall victim to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The only step remaining was going back to the Super Bowl and winning it, a goal for which the 49ers are near-impossible longshots with a 5-7 record in a season gone horribly wrong. Williams, meanwhile, as the consensus top draft pick, was so enticing the Bears traded their previous quarterback of the future in Justin Fields. The same Fields the 49ers

Trump says he can’t guarantee tariffs won’t raise US prices and promises swift immigration action

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump said he can’t guarantee that his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won’t raise prices for American consumers and he suggested once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect, in a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere. Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning “things do change.” A look at some of the issues covered: Trump hems on whether trade penalties could raise prices Trump has threatened broad trade penalties, but said he didn’t believe economists’ predictions that added costs on those imported goods for American companies would lead to higher domestic prices for consumers. He stopped short of a pledge that U.S. an households won’t be paying more as they shop. “I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow,” Trump said, seeming to open the door to accepting the reality of how import levies typically work as goods reach the

The spiritual heart of Paris awakens: Notre Dame Cathedral hosts first Mass since 2019 fire

PARIS — Notre Dame Cathedral, its air thick with the smell of incense, on Sunday hosted its first Mass since the catastrophic fire of 2019, a moment that transcends religious significance to become a powerful symbol of Paris’ resilience. Beneath the glow of traditional chandeliers and modern spotlights, which illuminated its intricately carved stonework, the cathedral emerged reborn, its grandeur restored after more than five years of reconstruction. For Catholics, it marks the revival of the city’s spiritual heart, a place where faith has been nurtured for centuries. For the world, it signals the rebirth of one of global heritage’s most famous landmarks. The event was both solemn and historic. Archbishop Laurent Ulrich presided over the morning Mass, including the consecration of a new bronze altar. Words on ammo in CEO shooting echo common phrase on insurer tactics: Delay, deny, defend

A message left at the scene of a health insurance executive’s fatal shooting – “deny,” “defend” and “depose” – echoes a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. The three words were written on the ammunition a masked gunman used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday. They’re similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend” – the way some attorneys describe how insurers deny services and payment, and the title of a 2010 book that was highly critical of the industry. ALSO READ | New photos released of suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder Police haven’t officially commented on the wording or any connection between them and the common phrase. But Thompson’s shooting and the messages on the ammunition have sparked outrage on social media and elsewhere, reflecting a deepening frustration Americans have over the cost and complexity of getting care. What does the phrase mean? “Delay, deny, defend” has become something of a rallying cry for insurance critics. The terms refer to insurers delaying payment

Jubilation and gunfire as Syrians celebrate the end of the Assad family’s half-century rule

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule but raising questions about the future of the country and the wider region. Joyful crowds gathered in central squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country’s future. Why did the SF Giants add Willy Adames? A deep dive into the numbers

Willy Adames has never been an All-Star. He has never won a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger. The top of his Baseball Reference page — a space reserved for a player’s awards and accolades — is barren. So, why is he soon to own the largest contract in Giants franchise history? In short, he has been really good for a long time. Adames has been a consensus top-10 shortstop for the last half-decade, one who does a little bit of everything. He’s a testament to the quote, “Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Adames alone doesn’t elevate the Giants to contention but he inches San Francisco in that direction. If the Giants can beef up their starting rotation, too, a trip to the playoffs next season is in the cards. Let’s take a look at five numbers that help illustrate why San Francisco signed Adames: 20.1 Since Adames made his debut, only nine players have accrued at least 20 WAR (per FanGraphs) as primary shortstops: Francisco Lindor, Trea Turner, Marcus Semien, Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Corey

DIMES: Cons outweighing pros with NBA Cup

Warriors beat writer Danny Emerman shares his thoughts on the NBA  The NBA Cup isn’t worth the hassle. Following it during the group stage is nearly impossible. The incentive structure of prize money for players and coaches is off. Some within the league worry about the potential injury risk of ramping up for playoff-level play so early in the season. The championship game gets Thanos snapped from history. What’s worst is that teams get punished, not rewarded, for performing well in the NBA Cup. They’re better off missing the knockout rounds. Making, and advancing in, the NBA Cup comes at a cost. Consider the Warriors, who are set to go on the road to play Houston with a chance to advance to the semifinals in Las Vegas. If they beat the Rockets, they’ll play 40 home games on the season, imbalancing their schedule and creating more difficult travel that can cascade. “Schedule-wise, it hurts,” an Eastern Conference executive said. “You lose a home game, it’s not good. That’s the one thing I feel like it sucks.” Their already gauntlet of a December schedule could add
