Draymond Green accepts bench role to help Warriors elevate Kuminga

SAN FRANCISCO — When Steve Kerr called Draymond Green to float the idea of bringing him off the bench in an effort to try to optimize ascending wing Jonathan Kuminga, the head coach needed to ask permission. Of course he was OK with it, Green told Kerr. Like he is when he has to guard bruising centers and play through injuries, he’ll do anything he can to help the Warriors win. “I’ve been one of (Kuminga’s) biggest fans since he got here,” Green said. “So if he has an opportunity to start, you can’t be hypocritical. If they’re like, ‘We want him to start, but it’ll be for you,’ you can’t be like, ‘nah, not for me. That don’t work.’ I’m a fan of his. I want him to do well. So if his opportunity goes through me, it is what it is. And he earned the opportunity.” In a season of Steve Kerr searching for lineup combinations that work, the latest development is an experiment that removes Green, a future Hall of Famer who will get a statue outside Chase Center, from the starting

Sharks rookie forward to miss game against Florida Panthers

Rookie forward Will Smith has an upper-body injury and will not play Saturday when the San Jose Sharks face the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena. Smith, who has 11 points in 24 games this season, is considered day-to-day. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Saturday that he wasn’t exactly sure when Smith was injured, only that it happened near the end of a recent game. So far this season, when Smith has not dressed for games, it’s because the Sharks have given him what they’ve called ‘development days,’ which were introduced in part to help reduce the 19-year-old’s chances of getting injured. Before Saturday, though, Smith had played in seven straight games from Nov. 23 to Thursday, collecting three goals and four assists. After playing the Panthers, the Sharks will face the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday and finish their road trip on Thursday against the St. Louis Blues. With Smith out, rookie Ethan Cardwell, who has sat out the last two games, will draw back into the Sharks lineup. Warsofsky wouldn’t specify where Cardwell will play. Smith had been playing on

Syrian opposition activists say insurgents reached the suburbs of Damascus

BEIRUT — Syrian insurgents have reached the suburbs of Damascus as part of a rapidly moving offensive that has seen them take over some of Syria’s largest cities across the country, opposition activists and a rebel commander said Saturday. It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of the Syrian capital since 2018 when Syrian troops recaptured the region adjacent to the capital following a yearslong siege. It came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern Syria on Saturday, leaving more areas of the country, including two provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The rapid advances by insurgents are a stunning reversal of fortunes for Syria’s President Bashar Assad, who appears to be largely on his own, with erstwhile allies preoccupied with other conflicts. His chief international backer, Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine, and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up his forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has seen its proxies across the region degraded by Israeli regular airstrikes. The U.N.’s

Notre Dame Cathedral reopens its doors to Macron and other world leaders in a rare symbol of unity

PARIS — France’s iconic Notre Dame Cathedral is formally reopening its doors on Saturday for the first time since a devastating fire nearly destroyed the 861-year-old landmark in 2019. The restoration, a spectacular achievement in just five years for a structure that took nearly two centuries to build, is seen as a moment of triumph for French President Emmanuel Macron, who championed the ambitious timeline – and a welcome respite from his domestic political woes. Under the luminous stained glass, many world leaders, dignitaries, and worshippers will gather in the evening to mark the occasion – a rare moment of unity against the backdrop of global divisions and conflicts. President-elect Donald Trump, America’s first lady Jill Biden, Britain’s Prince William and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are among 1,500 guests attending the reopening celebration under Notre Dame’s soaring Gothic arches, led by Archbishop Laurent Ulrich. Because of strong winds forecast for Saturday evening in Paris, the French presidential palace and the Paris diocese said Friday the entire opening ceremony will be held inside Notre Dame, instead of starting from the cathedral’s forecourt as initially planned. Want more shrubs? How to make new ones with hardwood cuttings

By JESSICA DAMIANO Our gardens may be preparing for their winter slumbers, but that doesn’t mean we have to rest: It’s time to make free shrubs! The easiest way to propagate woody plants like dogwood, forsythia, hydrangea, rhododendron and viburnum, among others, is by taking hardwood cuttings in late fall or winter. All you need is a clean pair of bypass pruners (whose scissor-type action makes clean cuts), a a container and a well-draining medium (a 50/50 mix of coir and perlite is ideal, as it will simultaneously retain moisture and drain well.) No special training or expertise required. And, unlike growing from seed, the resulting plants will essentially be clones, growing into the same size, shape and color as their parents. How to begin First, select a deep container with drainage holes in its bottom and fill it with your potting mix. Water it well and allow it to drain while you take your cuttings. Why American travelers are choosing Europe for Christmas

By Mandy Applegate Christmas is the highlight of the year for many – a time of hearing Mariah Carrey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat, decorating the tree and seeing friends and family. However, celebrating Christmas the same way each year can cause it to lose its magical charm. From festive markets to new cultural experiences, find out why Americans are leaving behind their local traditions to celebrate this iconic holiday in Europe. The magic of European Christmas markets While Christmas markets exist in America, they’re not on the same scale as those in Europe. European Christmas markets are renowned for providing the perfect festive atmosphere with mulled wine, live performances, dazzling lights and countless food vendors serving hot food. If there is one market you can’t miss, it’s in Strasburg. This French city is known to be the capital of Christmas, with the tallest decorated tree in Europe and 300 wooden chalet stalls selling gifts and treats. It’s not too late to learn how to ski or snowboard

Let’s face it: The best skiers in the world all started as soon as they could walk. In your group of ski friends, there’s a good chance the one with the best form tackles any terrain and is always first back at the chair learned as a kid, lucky enough to live in a place with skiing and parents who supported it. I grew up in the Midwest and never skied until I moved to Colorado at 30. But 20 years later, I ski 100 days a winter, and while I’m no pro, I’ll ski most anything and have a blast doing it. The median age of skiers has risen to 35, up from 30 a decade ago and 24 in the 1960s. And not all of them were lucky enough to learn as kids. More and more adults are joining the sport, especially as baby boomers hit retirement age, with more leisure time and disposable income. Many people are learning what I did 20 years ago, a lesson that changed my life, that you’re never too old to learn to ski or snowboard. Take
