Dense fog making air quality worse across the Central Valley

The pollution getting trapped in the Valley fog is raising concerns about health risks. Friday, December 6, 2024 7:19AM The heavy fog across the Central Valley is creating a twin threat to your health and safety by mixing with the pollution. FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — The heavy fog across the Central Valley is creating a twin threat to your health and safety by mixing with the pollution. In the early morning and late at night, a thick blanket of fog gets trapped in the bowl of the Valley when the temperature and dew points drop overnight. “We have basically a stagnate weather pattern that’s happening and this will promote fog as the temperature and the dew point come together and there’s nothing to break that inversion. So, it’s day after day after day of repeating pattern,” said ABC30 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Musso. Musso says we might not get relief until mid-December. “What we need is dynamic to come along like a cold front to sweep through to scour it out. Wind to come in and mix the atmosphere from the top to the bottom

Fresno City Council denies development plans for south central area

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Neighborhoods and businesses in the heavily industrialized area of south Fresno won’t see big manufacturing projects roll into their community, for now. Fresno City council members heard passionate pleas from residents Thursday about potential development plans in an area that was previously the North Avenue Industrial Triangle. “I’m here to oppose environmental racism that has caused the south side of Fresno to be breathing in more polluted air than the rest of the city,” said Nayamia Martinez with the Central CA Environmental Network. In 2019, it was renamed the South Central Specific Plan. “Historically speaking, south central is a place where it was designated to be a rural residential. Many families built their homes trying to get away from the city,” said Fresno City Council member Miguel Arias. Over time, the city and the county rezoned that area to be heavily industrial for big job centers, big distribution centers, big manufacturing centers and unfortunately, please still live there.” Last year, an Environmental Impact Report was drafted. Then last month, the plan was revised and the report was released. It includes a

Maps show shaking intensity, aftershocks following major 7.0 Humboldt County earthquake

Friday, December 6, 2024 4:40AM SAN FRANCISCO — A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Northern California on Thursday, causing a tsunami warning and several aftershocks. The tsunami warning — which impacted at least 5.3 million people before it was canceled around 12 p.m. Pacific time — was issued for coastal areas in California and Oregon, including several parts of the Bay Area. The earthquake’s epicenter is off the coast near Petrolia, in Humboldt County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS estimated that more than 1.3 million people lived close enough to the quake to feel it in some capacity. The map below shows the epicenter of the earthquake, along with how far the intensity of the shaking was felt. There were reports of shaking in the state from as far north as Del Norte County and as far south as San Mateo County. Since the earthquake hit at 10:44 a.m. Pacific time, data from USGS through 6 p.m. shows there have been about 60 aftershocks over a 2.5 magnitude in Northern California so far. Of all total aftershocks, the largest was a magnitude of

Without Steph or Draymond, Warriors snap five-game losing streak against Rockets

SAN FRANCISCO — With Steph Curry and Draymond Green both wearing sweatsuits at opposite ends of the bench Thursday night, the Warriors were going to need alternate scoring options in order to snap their season-long losing streak and continue a historic run of success against the Houston Rockets. Inserted into the starting lineup for the sixth time this season, Jonathan Kuminga understood the assignment. An aggressive and efficient performance from the fourth-year wing helped guide the undermanned Warriors to their first win in nearly two weeks, 99-93. The Warriors’ two sidelined stars popped from their positions on the bench to mob Kuminga after he took his defender off the dribble and finished the at rim while clinging to a one-possession lead in the final seconds for the last of his career-high 33 points. “That was the play of the game,” coach Steve Kerr said. “It was just a beautiful drive and capped off a phenomenal night for him. He was brilliant.” In all, 15 of Kuminga’s points came in the final quarter, providing an offensive spark the Warriors have lacked late in games without Curry

Improving Sharks show they’re still capable of a stinker

The San Jose Sharks’ recent success exemplified how far they’ve come this season. The Sharks’ lopsided loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday showed how much they still need to improve. Looking listless from the opening, the Sharks allowed five goals in the first period and never recovered in an unsightly 8-1 loss to the Lightning at Amalie Arena. “We just weren’t ready from the start,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “Didn’t skate, didn’t compete, didn’t do anything well.” The Sharks and goalie Vitek Vanecek allowed five goals on 12 shots in the first period, as the Lightning, in 86 seconds, turned a 1-0 lead into a 4-0 advantage by the 8:55 mark on a goal by Conor Geekie and two from Brandon Hagel. “I thought our guys were excited for the challenge tonight,” Warsofsky said. “But we got … a reality check of when you don’t skate, when you don’t compete against really good hockey teams — or any team in the National Hockey League — this is what’s going to happen.” Vanecek was pulled after the first period in favor of Mackenzie

Traffic stop near Cottonwood leads to arrest of Venezuelan man

COTTONWOOD – The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced a traffic stop on the highway led to an arrest and alleged discovery of cocaine and firearms. The California Highway Patrol around 8 a.m. Tuesday stopped a vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 5 for a traffic violation. SCSHO said during the traffic enforcement stop, the vehicle’s driver was identified as Danny Zambrano, 25, of Venezuela. He was the only person in the vehicle. The CHP officer utilized his narcotic-odor detection K9, which resulted in a probable cause search of the vehicle.  Law enforcement claims during the search, around 51.5 grams of suspected cocaine, an AR15-style pistol, a Glock handgun, high-capacity magazines, and ammunition were found inside the vehicle. After discovering the contraband, the Shasta Interagency Narcotics Task Force was contacted and responded to assume the investigation. Law enforcement claims  SINTF detectives placed Zambrano under arrest on suspicion of possession and transportation of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a non-serialized assault weapon, possession of a loaded firearm while possessing a controlled substance and possession of high-capacity magazines. Zambrano is currently in custody at the Shasta County

Warriors optimistic Steph, Draymond won’t be out long

SAN FRANCISCO — Without Steph Curry and Draymond Green for the first time all season, the Warriors put their highly touted depth to the test Friday against the Houston Rockets, the first of four straight at Chase Center. Coach Steve Kerr expressed optimism, though, that their two stars would be back on the court Friday, when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves. Green missed his second straight game with left calf tightness and underwent an MRI, which revealed no structural damage, the team said. In a news release, the team described his status for Friday as “questionable,” and Kerr added, “I think it’s possible that he’ll play.” Curry received the night off after posting team-highs with a 24-point, 11-assist double-double in a 119-115 loss to the Nuggets on Tuesday. He appeared on the injury report with a bilateral knee injury — or runner’s knee — the same ailment that forced him to sit out last week’s loss to the Thunder. “Three in four games, he’s in pain,” Kerr said of Curry. “We can’t play him through this stretch every game and expect him to get through

The lease and non-relocation agreements each cover 30 years. “It’s a really significant day in Las Vegas,” Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in his closing remarks. “Today’s a real milestone. I think we should recognize that and celebrate that.” That drew applause from most of those attendance. “It’s really an exciting day for the A’s,” team board member Sandy Dean said. “We’re grateful to everybody that helped us be here today.” Other details remain to be worked out, such as a development agreement with Clark County, but groundbreaking likely will take place in the spring to allow a scheduled opening for the 2028 season. Dean said talks with the county were in the early stages. “Clark County has been very receptive to our timeline,” Dean said. The cost for the A’s stadium
